A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
I went to the store to try out the Sequential Prophet Rev2 for fun, but they didn't have it set up on the floor.
"You should just take it home," the rep said. "Bring it back within 30 days if you don't want it."
So here we are, with the Prophet Rev2 at home. I love having so many voices that so easily can be panned into a binaural sound. The keybed and layout are fantastic and I just like playing it. The sound is great except when it isn't; something about the full-open filter or resonance is displeasing in a mix, though I often don't mind it on its own. Here, I made a binaural patch, with the same synth sound hard panned to left and right sides, but slight variation in the DCOs and "slop" (terrible word) leading to a very rich stereo feeling. One of those rare beautiful things you can do with only some polysynths (and software, of course).
In short, the Prophet Rev2 is a wonderful synth to explore with something of a frumpy sound, for better and for worse.
I was noodling on some chords and wanted accompaniment, so I started with the Cosmos (for some asymmetrical looping), and then took out my melodic eurorack skiff. It's been a while since I had it on the table, so it was nice just to hear these sounds again. Eurorack just leads me to places and sounds I might not otherwise find.
Ultimately, this jam came together in a day, and I'm always a little worried about those ones, because you might not like them as much the next day. So far, though, I'm pretty happy with it.

I know the Walrus has a hand in the sound, but that Prophet sounds so warm and weighty. That initial chord feels like a blanket of sunshine enveloping you.
Ahhh the rev2. My favorite hardware synth I own. Period. ...also my only hardware synth so lol nvm

Woah those chord inversions in the beginning are really something else Jay. would love to see a jam where the Qu bit becomes the centerpiece.

I love seeing the Soma Cosmos still on your desk- it's one of my favorite pieces of equipment. It seems a lot of "fair weather synth friends" have moved on from it.

The Hoskingianna is strong in this one - as usual - im transported to otherworldly realms - here with a bit of love-sickness involved - ;-) Whatta great sounding synth that rev. 2 is ! - Im still saving for a Take 5 ,- 😘 ohh- i just had a Databender in the mail - im connecting it with my Panharmonium as i write this ... im so stoked !
You know, I think the Take 5 sounds better overall, better filters and oscillators, and also better effects. The Rev2 has the advantage of the 16 voices and bitimbral design, but on a desert island, I'd bring the Take 5. And thanks as ever, Mikkel!

Thanks so much! Short version: this one is a modification of a preset called something like Analog Brass 24, with the filter cutoff turned down, and put into bitimbral stack with each timbre hard panned to one ear. And thanks!

Great sounds, Jay! The Rev2 seems to be a great piece of gear! ✌ Edit: My Prophet-10 takes about 10 minutes to warm up for the pitch to stabilize... Does the Rev2 need some warm-up time?
No warm-up whatsoever, actually. I guess that's a DCO advantage? I'm not sure. And great to hear from you, Steve!

Hi Jay , mays i ask you bewteen the Take 5 and the Rev 2 , witch one would your recommand as an all arounder that sounds great ... i watched your video on fav gear and you went for the take 5 , but the rev 2 has more polyphonie and dual layers also that can bring some on the table ... (lol yep since i want the desktop version )

On the whole, I'd still go Take 5. Great size and layout, sounds better overall, better effects. However, if you need the extra voices or want the bi-timbrality, then go for the Rev2. Both are great. I just find the Take 5 sounds a little nicer to my ears, and its size is ideal.

Rev2 or Rev5 reissue?
Rev2 for me, but only because I've got less connection with the Prophet sound and history, and having stereo/binaural sounds is huge, and lots of modulation is great. That said, the Rev5 reissue sounds bananas good, much nicer basic sound, and if the Prophet sound was my thing, I might go that way or to the Prophet 6. Who knows, I might still!
