One of the great moments of personal freedom in all of opera, where the five participants overcome their individual histories of frustration, hurt and bitterness with themselves and each other and reach the perfect understanding of themselves and each other. It is a moment where grace is achieved and given form, both in the narrative and the music.
This production is wonderful, and the singers here really did it justice. I heard part of an interview this afternoon (3/26/11) with Morris during a Met intermission broadcast where he said that he had no interest in performing Sachs until Levine convinced him to do it, and that Meistersinger is now his favorite opera. Morris is a more introverted Sachs than many, but his acting skills carry the day....watch at the end of the quintet at the way he looks at Eva from behind as a father would.
As good as it gets. Bravi to all. I'm always surprised at how well Levine does Wagner. His Lohengrin, for instance. Brings out all sorts of nuance. Thanks.
Every note he wrote was exquisite, was it? I'll remind myself of that next time I watch a cast try to slog its way through (say) Act II of Die Walkuere. Let's not get carried away, Wagner fans!
I was looking for a good "Meistersinger"- recording (and found it here: great singers, worst staging, though ...). Unfortunately I found some CREEPY videos related to it ... (Enrique von Ofterdingern...). When the F... will they stop this "interpretation" of Wagner???
@DarbyRangers -I agree with you about Morris :) As for the staging, well, that's the Met. Personally, though, watching a German-Romantic staging of Wagner makes me squirm... Mattila is consummate here

Magnifique!!! Rien à dire!! Tous excellent.

Almost every note he wrote is exquisite.
Almost? ;)

Beckmesser is not a ténor but a baryton.
and we don't see him in this scene.
Eva is fantastic...........
Is that K Mattila as Eva? Looks like her. sd goh (malaysia)

James Morris seems rather uninvolved here - is this normal for him?

hmmmm...... probably you should clean your ears... thi is not a "Kna" cast but nothing to do with "nasal".
"Nasal" is not a problem, but the wobble, wobble wobble wobble . . . (But Karita Mattila is adorable)
Morris is often weak of voice. The others are okay. The tenor who plays Beckmesser overacts crudely and badly. There are better DVDs of this opera.
Sachs only lands about 8 of 10 pitches anywhere close. Ick.
Chopin is the best
They should rename this the "Nasal-singer". Terrible cast.
