@zdenko1945 It's a 2001 Met Opera production in New York City with James Levine conducting Ben Heppner as Walther von Stolzing , James Morris as Hans Sachs, Thomas Allen as Beckmesser, Karita Mattila as Eva, Rene Pape as her father Veit Pogner and Jill Grove as Eva's companion Magdalene. lovely piece, Eydtkuhnen. just too bad it has so many "skips" in it. was released on DVD in 2005 by Deutsche Grammophon and is a "must own" for any Wagner fan.
There's a mistranslation in the subtitles at 01:43 "It did not remain noble, as it was when courts and princes blessed it." Rather, the german words should be translated as "Didn't it remain noble, as it was when courts and princes blessed it?" Hans Sachs does not say that the art of the masters did not remain noble; on the contrary, he asks: "It remained noble, didn't it?"
I think the meaning is more like, "even if it didn't remain aristocratic... it still remained German and true" Full text is as follows: Das uns're Meister sie gepflegt grad' recht nach ihrer Art, nach ihrem Sinne treu gehegt, das hat sie echt bewahrt: blieb sie nicht adlig, wie zur Zeit, da Höf' und Fürsten sie geweiht, im Drang der schlimmen Jahr' blieb sie doch deutsch und wahr; und wär' sie anders nicht geglückt, als wie wo alles drängt und drückt, ihr seht, wie hoch sie blieb im Ehr': was wollt ihr von den Meistern mehr?
