    I have been doing the exact same thing, collecting all the old GW miniatures that appear on the Advanced heroquest box and enemy tokens ect. I only recently finished collecting all the Talisman 2nd edition + expansions miniatures, that costly process took about 3 months, but totally worth it. There is just something amazing about that old GW miniatures, both 40k/Fantasy/Blood Bowl, it's probably just nostalgia? Though I find the older miniatures a pleasure to paint and none of them are ridiculously over sculpted and the smaller scale is just perfect for tabletop gaming.

      I love Oldhammer miniatures; I'm also working on fleshing out the rosters for Advanced Space Crusade. They just have so much character, without being overburdened with details that would make them a chore to paint. One of my prize possessions is a complete set of the Heroes for DungeonQuest. There are some great miniatures in there.

    I cannot tell you the joy that this video brought me. I too was a proud owner of this amazing game and an avid collector of 1990 Skaven despite a very limited budget at the time.

    Really like those Skaven, I would like to see a video when you paint them. I also like your long term Advanced Heroquest project. I've been collecting models for Warhammer Quest (1995) for about 20 years now, the idea being to be able to have a themed campaign against most of the different races. So far I have enough for Orcs & Goblins, Undead, Chaos, Chaos Dwarves, Dark Elves, Lizardmen & Skaven. It's something that will never be finished, as there are always some more to collect. Good luck with your project!

It's definitely going to be years of collecting ahead for me, but this isn't really one of those things you set out to "finish" as such. There will be painting for these guys, once I have got through HeroQuest and Space Crusade.

  • @knghtbrd
    @knghtbrd 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've got a mostly unpunched AHQ copy … It's clearly not ever been played. Looks like someone opened it and tried setting out the basic dungeon tiles and put together the doors (and promptly snapped several of them) and went back to playing HQ. It's complete for what came in the box. I also have something else interesting. The AHQ Paint Set, unpainted, still on sprues, bottles unopened, missing its brush/ Looks like some of the paints have separated a little but are not dry (they were not stored under ideal conditions so I'm not surprised!) but Ninjon recently did a video that makes me confident that all but the Chaos Black are probably QUITE salvageable.
    Probably I won't be using this starter set as my first experience painting though-I'm more likely to get a Reaper set for that. I've managed to paint a little custom stuff with some craft paint, but that's about it so far. Mini painting is a whole different game.
    I'll look for a video of you restoring the doors-I would like to do that, but I don't know if I need to try and match up the hinges with the door they snapped off of, but I'll be interested to see what might be done. I think for those doors, the original plastic hinges are so flimsy and so poorly designed I'd rather a functionality restoration than an accuracy restoration, if I'm making sense?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think quite a few people picked up Advanced HeroQuest because it was widely available (I got mine in Argos!) and because they thought it was going to be more like HeroQuest than it was! It's great you have a virtually unused copy.
      And yeah, the doors were a great idea, poorly executed. They tended to snap if you looked at them a bit funny. I'm fortunate to have a complete set of unbroken doors, but that's really quite uncommon because a lot of people just jammed them together and immediately snapped off the nubs. I have one door with a broken hinge but I no longer have the nub. I might have a think about what I could do to restore that one. Magnets might be the answer.

    Are you also interested in collecting and prepping the HeroQuest expansions, 'Advanced Quest' White Dwarf, etc?
    Aside from that I wanted to ask, do you ever consider doing a top 10 list or several? IE: Favorite, Most Fun, Fav Solo, Fav Art. etc?
    I know you have said you try and keep your channel a little less personal and a little more informative, but I think at this point you have a pretty strong following of folks who just like to listen to you talk about what you love about the games we love. @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're not supposed to be the same character or anything, they're just both grey seers. All grey seers have horns, because they're chosen by the Horned Rat. Gnawdoom came out in 1986, and at that time pretty much every miniature got a special name, but they weren't like named characters we know today. Thanquol came out in 1993 and is a specific entity with a back story.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Advanced HeroQuest does some very cool things, including stuff that many games still don't do. It has a really grimy, gritty feel as you scrabble to make ends meet. Casting spells uses ingredients, and without ingredients your wizard is useless. Your archers can run out of arrows. When you return to town you can write a will to pass on your treasure to a new character if you die, and you have to pay moneylenders to look after your wealth. It's probably the adventure game that drills into those humdrum elements of being a hero more than any other.
      Giving the dungeon master chips that that they could use to deploy named characters or retreat them off the board so they came back later is a neat touch, and gives a sense of personality to the enemies. You are facing these nemeses that keep returning to cause problems, rather than constantly going up against generic bosses. It has a lovely Old World aesthetic, and you get to fight against all kinds of skaven. There's stacks of extra content available online, and you can get all the bits for the incredibly expensive Terror in the Dark expansion online too.
      It is somewhat a product of its time. A little clunky at times. There's lots of rolling on charts. The solo rules tend to fall into the "do what you think the enemies would really do" category (which I am fine with). Unfortunately, even badly damaged copies are starting to get a little pricey, and if you try to collect the other enemies like I'm doing the cost gets pretty eye-watering.

    Well now you've screwed up all the prices.
    I bought almost all the Jes Skaven several years ago thankfully.
    When you get around to priming these make sure you give them a good soak and scrub in acetone first, then wash up in soap and hot water, and finally a prime with a non-etching metal car primer. You probably noticed they are rather high in lead content.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Jes skaven are excellent and slowly creeping up in price all the time. And yeah, these are probably more toxic than poison wind globes - like my mum always used to say, "Don't eat 'em." I've painted some of the 80s and 90s Oldhammer, and after washing with soap and water I've always just used regular miniature primer. What's the benefit of using the car primer?

    • @johnmiddleton4291
      @johnmiddleton4291 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring That black on them is lead oxide and needs to be removed. Metal primer helps prevent it coming back.
      Acrylic paints are often porous enough to let air and some moisture through to the metal underneath or may trap some moisture underneath that never fully dries. This can lead to the lead oxidizing underneath the painted surface and it flakes off with time. With older acidic paints it could even rot the metal away on the mini, though that's pretty rare with modern paints.
      An auto primer for metal will prevent all of that because it's designed to fully seal, provided you fully cover the mini with it.
      Up to you, but I've seen some pretty nasty stuff happen without proper care.
      Acetone will help remove the oxidation that's already on the minis.

      @@darrenrichardson6146 Indeed.
      I think one of the things that accelerates it in old minis is storage in or on pressboard, particle board, or chipped wood furniture. Something about the adhesives used in that stuff really reacts with old lead.
      I read on an old vintage soldier board a few years back about a guy who stored all his old minifigs from the 70s in cheap particleboard drawers and they turned almost to powder entirely. Granted that's probably pretty rare.
