    I'm starting to think the army I bought may have been Thorgrim's Dwarf Command from White Dwarf 159, the Battle for Iron Peak. If anyone has that issue or happens to know if that army was available as a mail order package, drop me a comment. You would be putting me out of my misery!

    • @patriarch7237
      @patriarch7237 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have WD 159 in front of me March 1994. Special army deal: 3 x 20 dwarf infantry, cannon & crew, bolt thrower & crew, 10 arquebus, 10 crossbowmen, 10 troll slayers. Special price of £90 vs total value £102.50. Not at all clear, but it doesn't appear you get Thorgrim or his battle standard bearer in that lot (standard Dwarf hero minis), since the batrep lists them as separate from the 20 man units.

      Other delights include an Advanced Heroquest adventure called Rivers of Blood, the Fantasy Fighters box referred to in the video above, the Silver Tower of Tzeentch (Epic), Eldar in Tyranid Attack, and the first 40k rules for Marine and Eldar Scouts. Including the now famous shuriken catapult scout....

      Ah, that's definitely it. Thanks for that. I don't recall getting a general, although I originally had a Marauder general with warhammer. I know I eventually purchased Ungrim Ironfist with his cool dragon cloak to lead the army, alongside Gotrek and Felix. I must have purchased the spears I remember at a later date. Funny thing is I was so excited for that army back in the day. I can't believe how much I was thrilled with 60 infantry, a few ranged units and some trollslayers!
      I have that Advanced Heroquest adventure saved away. One day I will have all the classic miniatures to play it!

    Thanks for another great video. I’m fairly new to your channel but it’s now firmly my favourite. I share the same fondness for, what I will always refer to as, “Golden Era” GW gaming. Nothing can beat the feelings aroused by those older games. I still have my original copies of Space Crusade and Heroquest, which get regular airings. Looking forward to the next video already. 🤘🏼

      They have really nice, clean designs. One of the things I always appreciate in the earlier miniatures - lots of character without relying on fiddly details.

  • @hispazargon
    @hispazargon ปีที่แล้ว

    The miniatures of that Citadel box fit really well with the classic HQ ones. Even they look to had been sculpted by the same people. I use in HQ those orcs as Elite Orcs, they have exactly the same face as the classic HQ ones, I use the skavens as regular HQ Skavens (and the ones from AHQ as Elite Skavens due their bigger size) and of course I use in HQ the Goblin Archer miniatures as themselves, probably the best ones of such era.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they have a very similar aesthetic, especially the goblins. It's not too surprising as HeroQuest and Fantasy Regiments were '89 and '87 respectively making them some of the earliest fantasy plastics from GW. It makes sense that HeroQuest would be inspired by and learn from the lessons they learned while sculpting the models for Fantasy Regiments.

  • @Malcadon
    @Malcadon ปีที่แล้ว

    I remember the 4th ed WHFB Starter box set for sale at a game store, but I instead got the Space Crusade-inspired boardgame Mutant Chronicles: Siege of the Citadel. At the time, I was not into building-up a large game army, nor did I know anyone who was into fantasy wargames, so I gone with the scifi HeroQuest game (I was also unaware of Space Crusade). Even today, I have no regents passing up the WHFB game as I never had use for High Elves and I got the same Goblin Archers and Spearmen figures from WarhammerQuest.
    It is a shame HeroQuest never made any official archer and spearmen figures for Skeletons, Goblins and Orcs. Yeah, I know I could use figures from other lines that were all over the place and note that one attacks diagonal while the other attacks at range but with one less die for adjacent attacks, but it would have been nice to have, with official figures and monster cards. I know there are Elvin Archers and Mercenary Crossbowmen in the two expansions, but they are a little too strong to be basic grunt monsters.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord were perfect opportunities to create new variants of the core enemies, so it's a shame they never did. Making monster packs with goblin archers and the like is something I have suggested before as something I would like to see Avalon Hill do for the new edition of HeroQuest.

  • @marasmusine
    @marasmusine ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have yet to find a solo dungeon board game that I like as much as AHQ. All the alternatives have a heavy reliance on decks of cards. I liked that AHQ used tables that you roll on, it made it super easy to customize and to use different models. Warhammer Quest, Blackstone Fortress, Shadows of Brimstone are all...okay... but they all use decks of cards.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love Blackstone Fortress, but Advanced Heroquest easily sits above any other campaign dungeon crawler for me. It's amazing how little fiddle there is. You aren't constantly juggling cards and tokens, and flipping over special abilities or drawing from eight different decks.

    Another big fan of Clannad`s `Legend` here. They recorded some new music for the second series of Robin of Sherwood but those tapes are currently missing but with any luck they will be found one day.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @SJHUE
      @SJHUE ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring It is too short! I wish they would make an effort to extend this album. Even with the missing tapes the album could still be made longer. The opening track on the album by Clannad called `Macalla` is a reworking of a track from the second series of RoS. Worth a listen if you haven`t already.

    I ordered that dwarf army too. They didn't send the same miniatures pictured, just want old dwarfs they had that for the requirements. So you may well still have ordered that army.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I'm pretty sure it wasn't that army. Grimdal's Tomb was quite a small force (with a Kislev horse archer scout). I remember the one I ordered being bigger and featuring war machines. I remember ordering it a long time after it was featured, because I wrote to the mail order team to ask if I could still buy it, and they wrote back to say they would put it together for me, which I thought was amazing of them. I'll have to hunt it down at some point.

    I never owned a single wood elf. Its probably the only faction I had nothing from, be it FB, 40K, and epic. I loved the minis and remember Maurada had loads of sculpts Id stare at for hours in White Dwarf. The Advanced HQ paint set really was quite a cool bundle. Ultra Chalange: You need to paint all your AHQ collection using ONLY origianal paints from that era lol...

    How does the Skaven from the Regiments box work as substitute for the Steelrat/Skaven Warrior?
    Like you I've also become obsessed with owning at least one of every original miniature from AHQ, and would love to even dream about getting multiply minatures for monsters such as Chaos Thugs (12 needed!), Chaos Warrior (10 needed!), Beastmen (6 needed), Ghouls (9 needed), and off course the cool Skaven Warrior represented by the Steelrat (12 needed). Naturally I considerd looking for some possible proxies in a hopefully similar style.
    Why not use the Skaven Warriros from the AHQ box you might ask? I like them, that model is cool, but to be honest it feels like something in between WHFB v3 and v4. Comparing it to the Skaven in Warhammer quest you could easily see that it is just slightly smaller but very much the same sculpt. And when standing next to like say the Radbyte, the Skaven Champion it just feels obnoxious.
