Harley Davidson have a winning bike on their hands with the Pan America. I only ride on paved roads, but if I was looking for a touring bike such as a BMW GS, I would certainly consider the Pan America.
In fairness, I haven’t dropped the Pan America yet, so you probably have a point there. I loved my Kawasaki X300. And I’ve learned new techniques to control a bike off-road: grip with the knees, relax arms and hands, don’t try to steer, just go with the bike. It is transformative.

I've got the x300, which is fine for my needs and if I drop the bike, I can just pick it up. I wouldn't fancy trying to lift that Harley up.
