Vinnie Moore and Jennifer Batten inspired me to start playing guitar in '86. I had been rocking to Van Halen '1984', AC/DC 'Back in Black', and ZZ top 'Tres Hombres' around that time, but one afternoon I was walking through the living room when a certain Pepsi guitar commercial came on screen. The notes and technique were next level. The wild part about this commercial is, at first I saw the video, it was Vinnie playing a guitar and there was mention of some Pepsi challenge. I assumed it was some guitar shred contest and was blown away by his technique. Next thing I knew another guy was posing along with Vinnie's actual playing so I thought, OK, Vinnie must've won. I went and traded my 30-30 saddle gun for a Teisco Del Ray and small amp, and later that year , traded for a Westone Spectrum and Baby Marshall. I was consumed with the desire to do or have the ability to create sounds like what I had witnessed on that guitar. I didn't know the name ,Vinnie Moore, at the time, and it was years before I found out who he was. I well remembered his face and distinctive hair. The video showed more clearly his hands, but I couldn't tell how he was getting those pop-pop-pop sounds right at the end. Since I only saw the Vinnie version once, I was to never find the answer until decades later in a forum, Vinnie Moore himself replied with the answer :-) Although, he seemed frustrated with me at the moment for asking, That solo to me equals eruption, much more than that, had I never saw the Vinnie version of the commercial, I would have missed out on over 20 years of true enjoyment. A decades long Love affair with 6 strings. So, thank you Vinnie Moore , and thanks for all the great music.
That's Derry Grehan from Honeymoon Suite. They should've had Derry just do his own playing, or had Vinnie Moore do the playing AND the acting. Both are more than capable guitarists and could've accomplished this by themselves!! Leave it to 80's excess and some brain dead ad exec. to have one guitar player actually playing and a different excellent guitar player doing the air guitar to it?!🤦♂
Was always curious why Derry Grehan appears in this commercial instead of Vinnie. Also, funny I never noticed this before, but anyone else think the main riff's somewhat reminiscent of George Lynch's "Mr. Scary?"
Amazing! I can definitly hear some bits and parts in the middle, that sounds a bit like "Mr. Scary". Beautiful ending and guitar tone. You rule brother.

Well, the mullet-head poser is a pretty awesome guitarist in his own right. Vinnie just didn't have the look they wanted, which is typical for advertising.
Pretty great memory. While i loved Vinnie Moore's playing, it wasn't until after VR's Soldiers i knew it was him here. Heck, '74 or so, the older brother of a girl i liked (liked her friend more ;) makes thousands of dollars just turning around and looking at a camera by a nor Ca Beach, last image of the commercial.....bikes, a car.... Anthrax "Just need a face" VM was ....wait. Prob not mentioned. Great player.

Derry's quite the player himself, but he's not really a shredder like Vinnie - but - I'm pretty confident that with a bit of time, he could have learned the part, and played it, though perhaps not quite as smoothly as Vinnie does.

It’s funny how they hired one really good guitar player to do the playing, and then another really good guitar player to act in the commercial. Seems like a bit of a waste of expenses haha, I guess Pepsi has the budget though…
