As someone with no understanding of bonsai. Why are stones and pebbles described as soil? I hear it in many of your videos? Do these stones provide nutrients? Hold water? Seems strange to me, but that’s likely due to my lack of knowledge. Thanks
Here I used Lava and Pumice. Pumice holds water pretty well and fertilizer is applied frequently. The perks of free draining soil is better aeration of the roots. Frequent waterings + aeration lead to the fastest root growth
@@abbasduman6963 I only bought this tree a year ago. I reckon (from the scars) that it was shaped as a young tree and then thick branches were allowed to grow and eventually cut off
Since it was a full repot I just removed all of the root aphids and then got a standard insecticide from a hardware store. The tree did super well after that
Hard to say since that must’ve happened a long time before I got the tree but I reckon this was grown from seed and then in the ground for a couple of years
Simply put: because the the energy has moved from the roots to the buds. Then it’s safe to cut roots. Once the buds have opened and leaves emerged they need a lot of roots to get water and then it’s too late or at least not great for repotting.
It’s a mix of sphagnum moss and normal moss, both shredded. It protects delicate surface roots that might form and helps with water retention in this relatively small pot. It also prevents the main soil from being washed away from water. And finally the normal moss is going to grow in, giving a nice natural aesthetic to the tree.
I think it’s a bit simplistic to reduce an ancient art form to that. Apart from the perception of nature that Bonsai expresses, technically torture can only be the term if it’s done to a sentient being. Trees don’t feel pain and aren’t sentient in the way animals and humans are, despite what some esoteric ideas say

However, I can't shake the impression that this Japanese art was created because Japanese men felt bad for being so small. That's why they reduced everything that surrounds them. To make them feel bigger. It is not the only art of theirs that was born through the suffering of living beings. To tie anything alive with a wire, who can think of that? I hope you agree that trees are alive.
Technically you are correct (a biologist subscriber of mine once explained the exact definition of soil but I can’t remember fully). I should say ‚growing medium’. However it’s basically a Bonsai‘s ‚soil’. And you’d be surprised how often I find insects, funghi and earthworms when repotting my trees
@HumansAreCarnivoresNotCows Deserts have desert soil. There are organics, insects, fungi, and other things in desert sand, just not as much as there are in a rainforest.
As someone who knows nothing about repotting Bonsai I'm going to ask what may be a stupid question, it didn't seem like the new pot is any bigger, why?

That's a very good material, a few more years of refining it, and it will have an amazing winter silhouette! Keep up with the good work.
I'm not crazy about the repeating zig-zag of the trunk but I can appreciate the how it got there.

It's actually not really smooth at all. Tons of scars that haven't fully healed. I think it is just the natural way these trees grow

You said you put soil in… isn’t it just aquarium rock? It seems most bonsais I see have a rather coarse pebble only with a mossy layer…
Pumice, lava and Akadama I would say are the 3 main things people use for Bonsai soil. When a tree is in a pot it needs a soil that is less compacted
May I ask why Spagnum moss on top? I have some here, and could apply that to my apple as well.

There is no rule that you have to ‚up-pot‘. That’s only done in cases where the trunk is supposed to be fattened

I hesitate to call gravel 'soil'. Soil contains organics, insects, fungi, and earthworms. What kind of nutrients feed this tree?
