Don’t believe he does that with all his very valuable plants - he is just trying to make a point on getting started and to encourage folks on getting started. But yes he does have a lot of starter material so he can be ruthless on some. Doesn’t mean you would on a plant that’s now worth $500 or $1000 or certainly those In the 10s of thousands of dollars. You did hear his words “tease”. And he is quickly showing us as many examples as possible - in some of his videos he has talked about the hours and hours it takes to renovate a plant.
@@plips71755 I think it's just a matter of knowing when such attention to detail is beneficial and when it isn't. If he's working on developing the nebari of a very mature tree, perhaps Mr. Chan will take great care with the root arrangement, but if he's just doing a repotting or the tree otherwise doesn't immediately need micromanaging then he knows there's no need to bother until the time is right.
@@plips71755 - Dont you believe that my friend. Even the most expensive and very old trees get the Chan treatment. Efficient is what I call it - not namby pamby !!
I like your practical, rough and ready, approach. When you have as many trees as you, it is necessary to be time-efficient. You give beginners like me confidence. Thankyou for sharing.
I agree, it's very encouraging to see learn from such an approach and to see Mr. Chan not treating each tree like it were a delicate animal which could die at any moment if you touch it wrong. Seeing his confidence and efficiency and how much progress he makes over the course of one video makes the prospect of starting out in bonsai seem accessible to anyone.
i love your views on rules, and being able to circumvent certain things (tools, soil, etc) if they're not readily available to you. it makes starting bonsai seem much more doable and realistic, opposed to if you were saying you can NEVER use normal soil for bonsai, you MUST have seperate pruning/root pruning shears, and so on. it's one of the things that makes your content so accessible for beginners and for bonsai growers with more experience... the adaptability and in the moment problem solving you show to us is really heartening and makes so much sense. thank you!!
I am in America and would love to go to Britain just to visit your nursery. I am learning so much from you as well as incorporating bonsai lessons into life lessons. Wonderful how approaching bonsai relates to approaching life. I purchased a small ficus and have wired, defoliated as well as repotted all the varieties of jade that I own. One of them once divided up I was able to make into a forest.
Thanks you very much for your generosity Peter, I live in Patagonia Argentina and as we are in the other hemisphere, we repot the bonsais in August. I work with pines that grows in my farm (Ponderosa, Murray and Oregon pines) I use to collect the yamadoris from the nature and mantain them in a training pot during one year, after that period I put them in a bonsai pot and start with the shaping. I am learning a lot with your videos, again thank you very much for your teaching. Best Regards. JG.
Peter you are so wonderful. I am so thankful to have found your channel. My family teases me because all I want to do now is talk about creating Bonsai and caring for trees .All in fun !! Thank you !!
If I had that pine at the beginning of the vid, 100% zero doubt my cat would have pushed it out of it's pot day 1, hahaha. Thank you Peter for the great content and constant inspiration.
Thanks for your insight Peter. Invaluable if your a beginner. I wish i had found you sooner. I've learnt through years of experience. But i still find you very informative.
Its so great having a Channel for Bonsai advice. I remember 20 years ago, there were only books (which were good) but was difficult to know if you were doing things right. He makes things easy to understand. Thanks Peter!
Wow... Exactly what I needed at this point of time. Thank You very much for the compact informative sharing. Gave me confidence in my effort raising my fruit trees. (Mangoes and durian)
Thank you Sir, I bought myself my first bonsai tree a couple days ago (syzygium buxifolium) and I think it needs to be repotted in new soil. I learned how to prune and how to water the tree thanks to your helpful videos.
Thank you Peter. I've only got my two indoor trees and a maple repotted so far. You and Ryan Neal from Mirai Bonsai are the best people to get best information from on everything. Both of you come to repotting from the point of view that you want to give your trees the best chances and don't go overboard and make your trees suffer.
Super useful info! I think the approach of just taking the most obvious overgrown roots off is probably the best approach for most home bonsai owners. Doing stuff like totally bare-rooting the tree and raking out the radial roots and all that feels really dangerous to me and doesn't seem totally necessary.
Great video as always, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. In the next repotting season I will try a different soil mix. I want it to be more regional and resourceful. Akadama needs a lot of energy plus shipping from Japan. And I don't want to use peat anymore for obvious reasons. I will use pine bark (regional), lava and pumice and coconut fibers (not regional, agreed). I really hope it'll work.

I need to repot a pomegranate tree I’ve had for three years. Roots are coming out the bottom. It’s allegedly a tree from the 1960’s. I’m scared to repot as I don’t know what soil to use! Some people use more organic material soil and others look more like rock and bark. What is the best to use, yours? Do you have a video on soil preparation? Thank you much, I’ve learned a lot from your content.
Very helpful that you give guidelines for timing the repotting as to when is the best time of year. Especially in temperate climates. I’m assuming there are better times of year also for top pruning, and whether they are deciduous, evergreen, or tropicals. That would be helpful information as well.
no chance for repotting at the moment here in Germany. Although I am living in the south-west, with usually milder weather, it’s too cold right now. Must wait until end of February, I’d guess.
Thank you for the repotting lesson. This is what scares most people away from Bonsai I feel. Everyone who comes to my place with their tree in hand I happily help them re pot it for free just to get them over the fear of it.
Peter I know you like to experiment,so have you tried the cat litter (molar clay one) I have been using it for years now and I find deciduous trees absolutely love it and produce loads of roots. It doesnt break down like acadama and can be used again and again,it also makes for easy root pruning.
Your philosophy about rules ("there are no such things as rules") reminds me of a quote I found a while ago. 'Rules are like paperclips: meant to keep things together, fun to bend, and easily twisted out of shape.' 🤣
Great informative video. Getting ready to repot my bonsai retusa that's still in its nursery pot. Was wondering if I need to place wire in it as its quite small.
Very informative video, really enjoyed it... Pearls you are giving us 👍 Seeing the repot of a large tree would be awesome 🙏 I’m aiming for 1 M plus trees 😀
there is a forest near my house with very fiberous soil. Lots of fallen tree material in it and there is a very thick layer of it on top of hard sandy soil. Would that seems like a good idea for soil? It seems like some of the soil you have used for some of your bigger elms I think.
Its The first week of March, I started repotting over a week ago....always seems like a race against the season here in VA to get them done before we go from 35° during the day, to upper 60's in a week....LOL I have lost more trees washing the soil off of my trees, I learned the hard way a few years back now, not to.. good point to bring up since MANY "experts" tell you to do so... wonder how many trees didn't survive afterwards? The chopstick method.. I just stuck myself so badly using my chopstick while repotting, my thumb still stings...LOL
Thanks for the video, another great one. I made a 5 tree dawn redwood forest with one of your excellent kits, am I right in thinking that they will need repotting in the same way? I guess there will be lots and lots of roots from all 5 growing together? And apologies if this is a daft question, bit if I wanted to get the trees to thicken up would I just cut them right back at the end of each season ?
If you have just made the forest then they wont need re-potting for at least a year, If you want the trunks to thicken, then plant them in a larger pot or box.
Good morning Peter.... I bought a bag of soil called Nature’s care organic & natural potting mix from miracle Gro and this is the things it says it has.... With Root-Trients - alfalfa meal, bone meal, earthworm castings, and kelp meal to provide nutrients essential in helping plants to build strong roots Contains cool things from nature like yucca and coir, which provide unique moisture control qualities! Now my question is.. Do you think I can use this soil for Japanese maple?
if one took an old bonsai and planted it into the ground . would it eventually grow back into a full size tree or is it more complicated than just a simple answer
My indoor bonsai has lost all of its leaves but there are a few new buds. Does this mean it needs feed? To be repotted? Bought from a garden centre a year ago!
Me -gently teasing roots, selectively cutting to make it look good, using a chopstick to get rid of air holes...
Peter-Rip, cut, ram, done!
I love it!
I also excel at picking airholes with chopsticks. Not.
