My 2014 F150 has one and a transmission temperature gauge and I have been looking for a replacement truck that has them also. I was very glad to see that this Ranger has them both.
Like the 2.7 Ecoboost powered F150, I bought my second with the tiny V6 in 23 and both have been flawless. Yesterday we drove from Harrisonburg Virginia back home to Southern West Virginia down interstate 81 and 400 lbs of torque is so nice on a busy highway getting trapped behind semi’s and a hole opens in the passing lane and you go for it, no worries.
When I went truck shopping I was interested in an f150 with the 3.5, first truck I drove was the 2.7, stomped on the gas going about 10, the tires screeched and it took off! I was thrilled with it. Didn't even bother test driving a 3.5.
I dont think it's the transmission and I really dont think there is anything holding it back necessarily. It's just a different philosophy, which seems to be more to act like a small diesel than it does a turbocharged gasoline engine. The rear ends and some transmission ratios dont necessarily help it feel peppy or responsive, but for a truck I dont think that is necessarily a bad thing.
I watched the teardown of the 2.7L Nano V6 over on the I Do Cars channel, and the engineering is remarkable. The compacted graphite iron block is tiny, and then the intricate casting of the spidery mid-block/bed plate is just amazing. That bottom end is sooo beefy for such small displacement. Then the cylinder heads are a thing of beauty, both port and direct injection, and water cooled cast-in exhaust manifolds. I've rebuilt the 4.0 in my 90's Ranger to go half a million miles, but if it ever dies, I want to swap in a 2.7.
The "Ike" is the signature project of TFLT. I find it oddly satisfying to watch your tests on this iconic road. For this one, I wonder why you didn't match the trailer weight from your prior mid-sized truck tests? That seems to be a key variable and will now leave everyone debating the conclusion about the Ford being the best towing mid-sized.
They don’t have that Dakota anymore and the trailer has changed as well. They do two types of Ike Gauntlet. To day was just the Ike Gauntlet towing a weight of 5000 lbs. then there’s a Super Ike. Both are representative, but for a mid size truck, you generally don’t tow more than 5,000 lbs. this last batch though, with the exception of the Nissan Frontier and the Jeep Gladiator have reached a new plateau. They generally CAN tow up to their maximums, even the 2.3 litre Ranger. The naturally aspirated Frontier 3.8 struggled a bit and the 3.6 Gladiator was sucking wind bad at the top! The 2.7 EcoBoost has always punched way above its weight class in the trucks, including the F150s. Still outperforms the 5.0 at anything above sea level, then the 5.0 looses off the line, but catches up.
@ - they have always varied it. The 2.3 can do the Super Ike with no issues. The 2.7 will be about the same as you saw today with fuel economy dropping to 5.5 mpg or so. They use what they have, towing the SxS is a very typical load towed by midsized trucks. So you can think for yourselves or look back in the video history. They have thousands of them!
Get that woman a hat! Also, you can tell she's a native by her sneakers in the snow. The Ranger is great. I just wish for two things: An Extended Cab with a six foot bed and the Heavy Duty version that they get everywhere else in the world.
Back in ‘17, a 6100 lbs enclosed trailer was used to compare a v6 Colorado and 2.8 Duramax Canyon. Why only a 5k trailer today, towing a less weight with less aerodynamic drag?
I don't like how their fancy tow mode puts the 4x4 on just to pull stuff. For me 4x4 is and always will be last-resort use for bad weather conditions. If you need 4x4 you shouldn't be driving 60mph.
Just bought the Ranger Lariat with the 2.7 and love it. I wanted it to tow my boat and am happy to see how well it did and look forward to putting mine to the test next spring!

Great engine and transmission combo. I’ve got the 2.7 with the 10-speed in my Bronco and it’s fantastic incredibly smooth and torquey right off idle, very much like a large displacement pushrod V8. But give it the pedal and it screams to the redline like a high performance multi valve engine. I average about 19 mpg and have experienced zero issues. I’d buy another in a heartbeat.

How is it "noob" to need more bed space and not wasted on cab space you dont use? If you drive in the city and only haul your latte and purse then sure, a shortbed is fine, but some folks use a truck as a working vehicle and need the capacity. Just because you dont need or want a full size truck doesnt mean you dont have a need for it to work and haul.
Thanks TFL for eschewing the “…do girls like…” videos. These women are an intelligent, smart addition to the TFL family. As you can see from this video, Jenn commands attention even sided with a personality such as Andre.
Nah. It's called engine braking. The biggest problem with riding your brakes is that they can overheat which means you lose performance in hard braking in the event of needing to stop. Engine braking helps prevent this from happening.
It's harder on the engine than it is the transmission. And brakes are cheaper than engines, too. Brakes on modern vehicles are so good that 12 brake applications in 8 miles isn't going to cause them to overheat. TFL uses a good driving strategy to let the vehicle get up to 60 mph, then brake firmly down to 50 and let the brakes cool before the next application. Riding the brakes is bad.
That gear indicator is everything. Every manufacturer needs to include that.
Yep, I love to know what gear my truck is in, even though it's an auto.

So long as it aint Nathan im good
The 2.7 is in the ford fusion sport
The traversal motors are gen 1, so they miss out on a lot of improvements. Biggest one piston cooling gallery and dual injection.
All the more to go wrong thought but I feel ya
Jen needs a hat!!
Andrey I'm from Texas where we wear cowboy hats year around. You can't wear a straw hat in winter. U look like a dork or a (dood) felt hat in winter .
Where is Mr truck?
Where is Mr Truck?
Where’s all the noobs complaining about the short bed?? 😂
Where is Mr.Truck?
Normally an attractive female would make the male viewers happy, oddly enough not having an older man is making them upset.
Andrew are you ok? You seemed shaky and around the 17min mark lethargic? Take care.
How hard is it on the transmission to rev that high going down hill? Brakes are a lot cheaper i would think.
Nah. It's called engine braking.
The biggest problem with riding your brakes is that they can overheat which means you lose performance in hard braking in the event of needing to stop.
Engine braking helps prevent this from happening.
Not hard at all.
Where is Mr. Truck???
So we are just inserting guests without an introduction? sO, Do YoU hAvE a ConnEctinG fLighT? trAveliNg FoR wOrK oR dO yOu LiVe hErE?
Is that new chick Roman's new girlfriend or something??? She's OK but she's definitely not Mr. Truck lol
Omg yayyy!!!
Bring back Mr. Truck button 👇
We love her! But maybe squeeze Mr. Truck in the back seat?
I’d stick with the frontier good luck having to replace the wet timing belt on the 2.7 oil pump
that belt has nothing to do with timing it simply drives the oil pump. I’ve never heard of an issue with one.
It’s a non-issue. 5.0 has it as well
2.7 is a solid engine. Very few issues and that’s no one of them.
This is ridiculous. Where's Mr. Truck?
M Truck in the cab makes that much of a diference? HA HA
No thumbs up from me because Mr Truck is missing
Is this the debut of the new Mrs. Truck?
Mrs truck already exists since mr truck just got married. Jen making a name for herself. Good addition to TFL.
Who dropped the ball !!! Jen needs a cow”girl” hat !!! 🤠
