I've played Undertale many times and each time is its own experience. Recently, I wanted to play it again, but as I was logging in and stepped into the first room, Flowey appeared and said: "Don't you have anything better to do?" I immediately froze and thought about all of my hopes and dreams that I want to reach and accomplish; surely I do have something better to do than to just play a video game again. I pondered for 15 minutes on the tutorial at the start. Undertale was one of my little brother's favorite games, and seeing Flowey again ask: "Are you ready?" made me realize that I must achieve dreams not just for myself, but for my brother as well. Right now I'm still working on becoming a better person and getting in shape. Undertale really has the power to open your eyes through music and personal connections with the characters.

A part of Undertale that I see missing in Deltarune is the emotional part of it. The part that connects to a part deep inside you, even if just hearing or seeing it for the first time. That moment when Flowey breaks the 4th wall and calls out not only the player for HAVING to know what happens in genocide and then IMMEDIATELY calling out all the viewers who were only watching because they were too weak to do it themselves was just god damn spot on to twist the knife. I feel that killing Toriel on your first playthrough is almost expected and the music plays a large part in steering you towards this choice.
On my first playthrough I killed all bosses, because I decided to just stick to my initial choice, even though I felt bad about it. And the game did not dissappoint -- the neutral playthrough with all bosses killed has some unique dialogue and one of the best interactions with Sans (caused by Papyrus' death) that I would otherwise miss.
Of course that was only possible because I was playing by myself instead of having hundreds of people back-seating ;)

    • @Greywander87
      @Greywander87 ปีที่แล้ว +37

The game actively tricks you into killing Toriel. In the Ruins there's a froggit you can talk to who tells you that some monsters can only be spared if you lower their HP enough. When you fight Toriel, there doesn't initially seem to be a way to spare her, so if you remember what the froggit said you might decide to try whittling down her HP to see if something changes. Of course, once her HP gets low enough you'll do massive damage on your next hit, enough to kill her. Ironically, the way to spare her is to do nothing at all. There is, however, one monster that you do spare by reducing his HP, and that's Asgore himself. Asgore is designed to act as a bookend with Toriel, showing how far you come, what's changed, and what hasn't.

    • @Dan0RG
      @Dan0RG ปีที่แล้ว +26

@@Greywander87 The froggit doesn't say you can "only" spare anyone by lowering their HP, they just mention it as an alternate option (and it _does_ work on all regular monsters that aren't one-hit kills). Funnily enough, there _is_ another froggit in the Ruins that gives you some actual advice for sparing Toriel (the one that teaches you about yellow names).

    • @KitsuneFaroe
      @KitsuneFaroe ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Greywander87 they say it as an alternative instead of saying it as an only, and as the previous reply said, there is actually a Froggit hinting how to spare her, even though I did catched at first (and because I had a friend that didn't helped at all at my side)
However I found no way to spare Undyne and killing her on neutral was one of the saddest moments I ever saw. Specially after I saw Papyrus call and Alphys talking about her. That's what Made me reset the game.

    • @CrazyDriver666
      @CrazyDriver666 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    * I got so ecstatic when you said Dummy! is one of your favourite tracks!!
    * Dummy! is my personal favourite, I love the repeating sections emphasising the character's brash, impatient attitude and their tendency to repeat words, and I'm always a sucker for swing.
    * Dummy! has impacted me as a person a lot as well, as both the character and accompanying music gave me a whole new outlook and completely changed my approach to things.
    * They gave me an entire personal realisation too, as the Switch version has an exclusive encounter with Mad Mew Mew, the Mad Dummy ghost possessing a new body. The whole fight is an allegory for her realising she's trans, and that really hit home for me.
    * Mad Dummy and her tracks associated with her pre and post-transition are just astounding. If you haven't, I'd recommend watching the "Mad Mew Mew" fight and listening to its accompanying soundtrack, it's wonderful at expressing that same rage in a new, more fitting body.

Dammit Marco, you made me cry again, bringing up that wonderful line.
But you're right; Undertale primes us for those deep, philosophical moments early on. In subtle ways, it drives us to look inward and feel the music, even as we feel the characters. A great game *uses* it's soundtrack - it uses everything it can - to deliver it's message. Not going to lie, more than Spear of Justice, her Genocide track is actually even more profound to me. Because unlike in Pacifist, you are a *genuine threat* in the Genocide run. Undyne is forced to fight harder than ever, even beyond death, and her track cranks up to eleven. With a name like "Battle Against a True Hero," you know that you're the villain in the Genocide run. Surrounded by monsters, you are the only *real* monster there. Undyne is one of the *only* roadblocks in a Genocide run, one of two characters legitimately strong enough to stop you. And her music, as always, is astounding.
And one that stood out to me - His Theme. That moment of hearing that soft, sad refrain; a familiar tune that I'd been hearing through the whole game, given context. We'd been hearing Asriel's theme *everywhere* because Chara's - the First Human's - Soul was with us, remembering their long-lost brother. It always makes me tear up when I hear it.
Even if you don't ever play it, I'd advise you to look into Deltarune's soundtrack, even if it's only personally. The music is equally as good, with a lot of callbacks to Undertale, and a lot of really, really good moments.

    FUN MEGALOVANIA HISTORY TIME!
This is actually the third incarnation of the song Megalovania! It's first use was in a romhack by Toby Fox, a spooky earthbound horror joint that it was originally composed for. It's second use (and my favorite) was an elevated recomposition of it for the webcomic Homestuck! And of course it's most famous incarnation is here, in Undertale's genocide route where it's absolute banger tunes guide you through what is assuredly the hardest challenge the game has to offer. I hope we see Megalovania used again by toby, it's a banger and deserves it.

  • @cloverlovania

fun fact! "spear of justice" was going to be a little different at first, but toby fox changed it to the current version because, in his words, it "didn’t sound enough like being heroically punched in the face."

I’ll never ever forget hearing Undertale being played by an orchestra. The wave of emotions that came over the whole venue was indescribable. Joy, sadness, and most of all, a feeling of comfort. We were all together… In some weird way, we were all connected; truly a powerful experience of music that I hope I never forget. Thankyou for another lovely video!

Honestly one of the things I love about the soundtrack is the leitmotifs and "repurposing" of melodies. I love how different "sans." and "It's raining somewhere else" are despite being the same melody. it's just so fun when you realize it.

There is a reason undertale became so big, it’s a shame that the amount of people who love it became so large that people who end up ruining it for other people (ignoring the game’s messages) have tainted it’s feelings for so many. It’s such a good game and the music is so genius

A good game holds a great story, music, and gameplay. To me Undertale when played for the good route is a game that reminds people of the good parts of there childhoods, the light of innocents, curiosity, and wonder that so many slowly forgets as they get older.... but genocide route is pretty much like when people lose there way, when they really have no hope or support system in life.

Honestly the way you talked, the emphasis and love I could hear you had for this game along with hearing about your childhood is enough to make me cry. I even wish I could have thought of such beautiful ways to describe Undertale like you did. There has been no other game that made me feel bad for killing a virtual character ESPECIALLY Toriel's death, she felt so real and alive that it reminded me of my own mother. I could feel emotion from just pixels on a screen, emotions that are usually hard for me to feel for even real people. The way toby fox plays with your heart strings using music and timing just absolutely impresses me. Undertale's overarching message taught me a lot of things along the way any i will cherish that forever.
There's more that I want to say but I cant find words for it.

If you don't mind, I'll share my favourite Undertale tracks... probably, it's so hard to pick the best ones.
Asgore - this is the closest thing to perfection that ever existed
Reunited - beauty, just beauty, joy and happiness
Hopes and Dreams - Marco explained it for me well enough
Battle against true hero - if Undyne's theme is "heroic punch to the face" then this is the legend about this punch, told several hundred years later with the same passion as in the day it occured
Megalovania - this song isn't overrated without a reason
Raining somewhere else - I love the vibe of this song
Snowy - my favourite location song in this game, wish it played in Snowdin to
Another medium - listen to these vocals in the background!
Core - the most catchy song in this game, never gets old
I would mention more, but it would be too long for a comment. Also I agree with you Marco, can you really call this a hotel is sooo good.

  • @Monocromatico

Undertale has impacted me in a number of ways, but not all at the same time. It offers so many sensible themes that are familiar to everyone it's hard to keep an eye on everything. Family, friends, growing up, making decisions that affect others. Failure. Depression. Su1c1de. Ultimate compassion.
I've dug into Sans' desperate relationship with Papyrus and the human child and all the pain he choses to endure in order to keep his brother happy and the human safe. I've felt touched by the motherly kindness of Toriel as she holds your little hand and take you to places in complete safety, and makes me think of my relationship with my son. But those things have touched me before I actually played the game (I went for the songs first because by kid loved them since he was 2, got the game only 2 years later).
Ultimately, I am systematically impacted by the whole ending sequence, from the entrance of Asgore's palace to conforting Asriel, because the compassion I needed to express there is something I want so hard to achieve in life and I don't know if it will be ever possible to that extent. Because then, there is Chara (alternatively they take the name you chose in the begining), the child that befriended Asriel, and how she is presented in those tapes you find in the true lab, and then you see the consequences of Asriel feelings for them turning him into a moral monster, I caught myself more than once thinking "this Chara is a bitch". In order to finish the true pacifist route, you have to give mercy to everyone (or run away, I know), but you never get asked to giver mercy to Chara. When I realized I was so proud of myself for doing the pacifist route and getting all the nice things because I am such a nice guy, but I actually couldn't forgive Chara for all she did to the Dreemurs (because they actually had reasons for doing what they did), it broke me apart. There, Undertale got under my skin without my consent, and I hate and love that Toby Fox for that. The scene of the pardoning and conforting Asriel is a very vivid picture of what I want in my life, and what I am struggling to achieve because of my own flaws.
And from an old bearded Marco to another: what a journey it's been.

I loved watching you play through Undertale! It was like playing it myself for the first time again. I love that game.
If you're feeling up to it, I highly recommend playing and/or reacting to music from the Kingdom Hearts series! It's a game series created by the same guy who helped make the Final Fantasy series: Nomura.
The game is in the style of Final Fantasy, but incorporates the worlds of Disney movies in its gameplay. Kingdom Hearts II is especially near and dear to my heart, as it explores the concepts of Belonging, Purpose, Apathy, Nihilism, and Friendship in a wholistic and satisfying way. The best part is that you don't even have to play or know anything else about the Kingdom Hearts franchise in order to understand and enjoy KH II. It was my first Kingdom Hearts game, and it's still special to me today.
Please consider playing Kingdom Hearts II!

This video deserves so much more views, this was an amazing way to describe the feelings Undertale can make you feel, and why it is such a powerful game, as is it's soundtrack. I also really hope that it'll convince more people to play this game, as I also originally made the mistake of starting the game, and dropping it soon after thinking it wasn't for me. How glad I am that a couple years later I decided to pick it back up with almost no prior knowledge of the game than the idea of having a pacifist and genocide ending, and knowing a bit of the first part until the exit of the ruins. It is definitely my #1 game I would want to forget in order to experience anew again, but since this isn't possible, the immense nostalgia present in almost any tracks of it's incredible soundtrack will have to do instead.
It'll probably take very long before we get blessed with another game of it's caliber, if ever

Toby fox is remarkably skilled at writing characters, making games, crafting stories, and many other things, but his most prominent skill to me by far is the ability to make a song that will make you feel exactly how he wants you to feel at that moment in his story. think about how 'home' is welcoming, how 'heartache' is melancholy, Run! and Spear of Justice are a bit frantic and anxiety inducing, but Bergentruking sounds almost reluctant, etc etc.
SAVE the World and Finale sound so triumphant, Alphys sounds so awkward, Fallen Down Reprise sounds so melancholy... Toby is such a master at making songs that make you feel a certain way and he knows it and uses it to great effect
it was fun to watch you experience this game and id be interested to see you play either the genocide route or Delatrune (a free spinoff (alternate universe? its not clear) game that only has two chapters out)
whether you decide to do more toby games or not i love seeing people experience undertale for the first time, its such a special experience, and your musical perspective made it more interesting. :) thanks

What makes undertale such an emotionally impactful game is the perfect mix of masterfully executed music, great characters, and the feeling that you actually play a part in the story. The music accompanies the story perfectly and the 4th wall breaks make you feel like the game and characters are more real, in a weird way. Undertale is the only game that has made me cry without the need of nostalgia, and that's why it will always be my favourite game ever.

Time to watch.....and i watched it...
The things you say are just, true.Undertale is really for children.
But the genocide...Is just not kid friendly trust me.SPECIALY the things you do, the songs are scary....
Pacifict, is just beatiful! The songs...the characters and the sad moments and so and so.
The characters in pacifict route are friendly and always happy and have a positive energy, well some of them.
The neutral route, its based on what you spare or kill...oh and flowey, oh boy oh boy.Flowey is a broken evil because,
"HE cannot understand...", like flowey says himself.i dont got more words for neutral really. Its a good route, kinda.....
The characters:im gonna do the main ones, i dont want this to be longer than it should be.Frisk, the one that makes the choice
and spares or kills, its the main character too.I think that Frisk is a good person normally.I have more things to say but like i Said no long things! Toriel, the protecter of the ruins and the Queen of the underground. She is full with positive feelings, she trys to protect you...look after you and treat you as if you were her child. She is the most wholesome character ever in undertale.Papyrus the great royal guard, well i hope he would. He is like toriel but with justice, adventure charastic and so and so, when you date him he is so wholesome! Sans the skeleton, hes a funny boney guy with jokes, he cares about his brother and maked a promise with toriel, which he HAS to break....He is a very overrated character, he is a good guy that protects people too.Oh boy Undyne the Spear of justice, she is full of JUSTICE! She is brave and always not giving up! Specially on the genocide route with the UNDYNE THE UNDYING! She is a good person too that wants to protects monsters from humans, EVIL humans. She is the hero of the underground.Alphys the royal scientist! I dont know if alphys is a boy or girl.Anyways alphys is a smart person and shy on my opinion, she trys to help people and so and so,Mettaton! The killer robot.I think mettaton is a boy...? I dont know the characters that much, he likes to make shows specially with humans...not in a good way tho.But i think he has a heart that cares about people, his songs are all types! Im sorry but i dont got anything else for him.Asgore, the kind of the underground. He has a broken heart, the reason he is attacking humans are just sad and heart breaking. Do i have to tell it..? I dont got time so uh yea and he is a good person too.He also trys to protect the monsters...Flowey the flower, or should i say asriel? Flowey is pure evil in his flower form, or i think so.He also wants to kill all monsters and says he is the god, i think.but on asriel form,he is a broken evil i would say, the musics of it tho....its just so good! He cannot be him without chara...He has some sad feelings, sadly i dont know much about asriel or i would say forget.Gaster, the old royal scientist, the scientist that had a failed experiment,i forgot the further of the line. The fun fact is that we dont actually really know who gaster is but its probably the gaster everyone knows.Toby fox,or should i say the "Annoying dog", the dog is a annoying dog as his name tells. He steals and so.
I wanted to talk about the musics but this is taking too long, i will say that all the musics are made with patience and skills.Toby Fox just makes masterpiece with his music making skills and so.Tell me if i have any wrongs or missed stuff!
    -Me.
    Love all of you!
Oh and, you would'nt want to know about the fandom and i dont wanna talk about it.

It's so heartwarming to see that my beloved game, even after almost 8 YEARS, is still being appreciated. I could talk about it for ages, but cutting it short just to the soundtrack, Undertale is a great example that music is CRUCIAL in video games, I can't imagine playing this game without sound. While playing the game you can actually hear the intended feelings for specific situations, which is beyond my astonishement. Toby Fox is truly a musical genius.
Oh, and my favourite track is "An ending". It combines other tracks that I love like "Ruins" or "Waterfall", creating melancholic mood, you can feel the emotional "weight" in this one, with beautiful sounds of the piano it almost seems like the music keeps "searching for hope".

I cant stress enough how much I love your insights with these videos. With the combination of your way of delivering them.

It's Raining Somewhere Else is one of my favorite tracks. There's a melancholy to it. It's one of the few times in the game Sans... well, he lays things out on the table. "Comic Sans" - the lazy font - is telling you to consider things, reflect on your actions, and what he promised. It's such a pivotal part in the story, and even more so when you understand he is your Judge, Jury and executioner if you go down the path of No Mercy.
The music in this game ignites feelings in me whenever I hear them. It's an emotional highlight, and it's so well layered. I know you're approaching this mostly from a musical perspective, but also the perspective (for me) is that of an aging gamer. (who also has an appreciation of music! I love singing, I'm learning guitar....) This game operates so counter to *expectations*. It's a subversion... and I know it'll be seen as cliché, possibly even now, but it was fresh when it came out. I've never had a tutorial betray me before. (btw, Toriel = "TUtorial" and Asgore + Toriel = AsRiel) Toby knew what gamers expected, and how they might test their limits.
You see a tree with a bowl of candy "Take one." - did you listen to what was written there or did you take the whole contents? you're given many small opportunities to do things good and bad in the game. Maybe that says something about you. I find a first run of something is usually the most "honest", when you make the choices you would.
But even doing what you're expected to... Well, I haven't done it personally, but I watched, which may be as bad or worse. I saw a No Mercy run. It's not fun. It's not challenging (mostly). Papyrus opens himself up to you, wide eyed and smiling and hoping you'll make the right choice... And then, you run him through, and it hurts because he is at his most vulnerable. Just... cut down. You are made to feel like the real monster down that road.
Lil' tip if you ever play again though. Buy a spider donut at the beginning of the game, and use it to recoup HP or at the very start of the Spider battle. It'll save you some headache ;) Maybe even play fetch with a doggo... or pet a lesser dog. :)
    7 play throughs. All peaceful.

I love when you do those kinds of videos, they are always a pleasure to listen to. Undertale is among my favorite games of all time and, as you said, one of the few that actually changed me. I was rather obssessed with it back on its release and those were really good times. Undertale's gameplay isn't for everyone, maybe I would not enjoy it as much if I played it first today, but it is a masterpiece in storytelling and overall game design. And the soundtrack is great, too, of course!!

Plenty more games down the line, my friend. There's a song I like to listen to, that you've heard before, called "Reflection," that I tend to listen to when I'm feeling lost. It reminds me that sometimes, to move forward we must not take a step back, but rather look back at what we've overcome before and use that strength to push ahead, despite everything.
