I entered service with the Marines in 1993, so I still remember the old cotton and canvas field jacket and rubber "gumby" rain suits for cold and rainy weather. The field jacket had a nice liner that could be buttoned into it or removed. When the gore-tex gear started to be issued it was great. It replaced the field jacket and gumby suit. Kept you dry. It wasn't as warm by itself compared to the old field jacket, but it was loose enough for a layered system to keep you cozy. The old field jacket was warmer, more comfortable, but it wasn't keeping the water out. Around 2000 I had a set of gore-tex issued that sucked real bad. The rain seeped in around the shoulders and armpits, had to get it replaced. The Marines kept this stuff on until we had switched to digital MARPAT cammies. A new set of gore-tex was made and issued in the same digital pattern. But the design was different and the old, initial liner underneath were no longer present, and other lesser changes. Still good stuff though. In the Marines we always had our rank on that little tab out in front of the jacket. The only time we didn't was when we were working on aircraft. You went to work on aircraft with as little objects as possible for FOD prevention (Foreign Object Debris). FOD could be left to cause damage and safety issues with aircraft.
@@froginthewaves8450 Yea, M65 with woodland camo was what we were issued and used until Gore-Tex took over. M65 had this really awesome liner that could be attached. It was great. In the Marines it was even acceptable to use the M65's liner under our regular camouflage blouses. Sometimes we'd have it underneath our maintenance work coveralls. Cold enough but it didn't warrant a full on jacket. Again, the Gore-Tex was better but M65 was awesome still.
Was in 1/3 in 93. Bought a jacket at Fort Lewis on leave the following year after wearing this for cold weather training in PTA. Still have it works great.

Yo! Nice. Got mine in '98 from eBay. My first eBay purchase of history. Shipped out to Australia after I sent a money order to the US. I was the dopest ghost in Canberra town coz of that jacket.
I used the epaulet to display my rank when I was in, but then I was one of the first soldiers in the Army in Alaska to wear one of these because I bought it with my own money. Those hidden pockets are awesome. I think you might be able to fit a whole MRE in each hidden pocket.
1/75 Infantry were issued Gortex Jackets and bottoms in I984. The jackets had a bright green, OD, and brown camo pattern. They were great for jungles but not as good in a European foliage. However, they did keep you warm and dry. I’ve looked for 1 on eBay but can’t find 1.
I mount a flat, rechargeable bicycle light on that epaulet for early or late walks to make myself more visible. Great wind water jacket. Needs a warming layer underneath at low 20s and below.
Order the same size I got large long, I wear oversized stuff. Large long will fit someone through/up to 41-45 chest, 71-75 inch (6'3) tall. Military sizing is usually in categories such as medium large xl etc. so you will have wiggle room in the garments if you are between sizes such as med-large, large-xl large. If you can find an XL sure as shit get it man. Bigger sizes are harder to get because they are more sought after because most of the fighting force wears small, med, large. and since these have been out of service for such a long time without a new contract the lesser made sizes are drying up. Also the regular size goes up to 6ft so if you find a large/xl reg you will be fine, most US army cold weather garments have slightly longer sleeves anyways. THANKS FOR COMMENTING!
This does not have a button in or internal liner that is not already a part of the garment. On the interior there is a taffeta lining but other than that there is no insulating liner like a smokers jacket for the m65. hope this helps THANKS FOR COMMENTING!
@froginthewaves8450 Thanks so much. I picked up 2 of these for a steal and I've been trying to figure that out. Ironically enough, there is a similar model/gen that actually uses a fleece like the one you're wearing in this video as a liner. It's got 2 zippers and you zip the fleece into the first zipper. I just didn't know whether this version had something similar for it.
@@therevolutionwillnotbeyoutubedto the best of my knowledge, the Navy parkas have the ability to zip in the fleece jacket if that’s what you are thinking of. I’m pretty sure the current Navy issue aor patterns have this feature
I still have the light weight Gore Tex rain jacket that was issued in 1985. In the 1990s, the Army issued a different version of a light weight Gore Tex jacket to the big Army.
I’ve heard that the Rangers still used “outdated” gear like the Vietnam era jungle fatigues and OD uniforms and accessories (especially in Grenada). Could this be a case of the rangers using the “outdated” Gumby (marine core slang) style rubber smelly jackets? Thanks for commenting!
@@froginthewaves8450 From 1973 to mid 80’s, we worn the Vietnam era fatigues and jungle boots. Honestly, they seemed to be better made than the early years of the BDUs.
@@froginthewaves8450 The Gore Tex jackets were new and just being fielded. I believe we were a test bed for Gore Tex jackets. The ones we wore were more fitting for jungle ops because of the bright green in them. However, we did wear them in Germany, during Reforger and in the Italian Aps. We were also issued Patagonia for layering. Thanks for the response.
@WickedgameC175 thank you so much for your service to this country. I can understand that. I feel like the Vietnam fatigues were better than BDUs for the type climate we were actually fighting in (South America) it wasn’t until 1984 until they came out with the first generation of 100 percent cotton ripstop hot weather BDUs instead of the 50/50 nyco temperate twill mix. In mountain warfare school, I wore the parka and pants over the silk weight base layer and sweated because the goretex doesn't breathe, so I'm confident with the fleece you could stand some low temps, static.
