The first "hidden secret" wasn't actually put there intentionally by Nintendo it's just a weird exploit with the password system that loads corrupted data depending on certain letters

More honourable mentions: in Super Mario Land 2, if you wait 2 minutes on the game over screen, you get Totaka's Song. You can also activate an easy mode by pressing SELECT on the file select screen and unlock bonus levels by taking hidden exits.
Plus, if you enter some button inputs on the Game Boy Advance boot screen when you insert a Game Boy or Game Boy Colour game, you can change the colour of the game and press either L or R to widen or shrink the screen.
Finally, in Warioware Inc. Mega Microgame$, by beating certain levels or getting specific scores on Jimmy T levels, you can unlock hidden one and two player games like Dr Wario (which is a clone of Dr Mario for the NES) and Gnat Attack from Mario Paint.

Chris Houlihan actually was a guy who won a contest from Nintendo on the 80's, the contest said that who won it would get their name included in a non-specified NES game. But the American Nintendo forgot about that and only remembered it in the 90's, but as the NES was now outdated and the SNES was popular, they included it in A Link To the Past. Poor Chris... He only knew that because of the internet. 😂
