      @@hellenhellen12 I honestly think Trigun does the Pacifist Story much better than Kenshin. Kenshin does the "Tragedy" for Consequentialism and giving Pacifism as a way for Atonement, whearas Trigun is the "Tragedy" of Idealism showing you the Limits of Pacifism. It just hits harder. Even though I think Trust & Betrayal is a Masterpiece.

    I don't get how this was an underrated anime. It deserves the same amount of praise as Cowboy Bebop and the other anime from our childhood

    • @mekullag
      @mekullag 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I watched it fully because it got so much praise and I thought it was pretty bad overall. It’s short but at the same time slow moving. There are no clear goals established for the main character or villain until the final episodes, making 80% of it feel like a waste of time. A serious sad dude who hides his sadness under a veil of lovable dope is just not enough to make a character seem deep. His values are basically superman like in how one-dimensional and unchanging they are throughout the whole story. He’s incredibly passive, with things always happening to him, forcing his hand which makes for a boring protagonist. The philosophical differences between protagonist and antagonist is literally just that one does and the other doesn’t like humans, with a weak exploitation of natural resources theme going on without ever being explored in compelling ways. The supporting cast is completely useless, has no impact on the story and except for the cross dude have no character arcs or interesting backgrounds.
      All of that could be forgiven if the action was great and while it sometimes is, it always gets interrupted by long, boring sections with no bearing on characters or story. I think (if one were to cut most of it) Trigun could make a decent 2-hour movie, but as an anime series I thought it was pretty bad. At its time I‘m sure it was better recieved because there where less great anime to compare it to, but today it just falls flat

    • @Sqwivig
      @Sqwivig 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mekullag did you even watch the fucking anime? Like, at all? The themes of mercy and pacifism in the show are incredibly deep and thought provoking. Vash is an idealist in a world that constantly challenges his beliefs. His internal conflict with his morals and the world around him aren't really explored in many other shows to the extent that Trigun does. Also Vash is dragged around by the plot on purpose. The entire point is that he wants to help people and do the right thing but is constantly roped into extremely desperate situations that get worse and worse. Vash doesn't look for trouble, it just finds him. And even after he goes into hiding and starts to live a peaceful life, he eventually comes back so he can defeat his brother. He can't just sit around and wait for Knives to end the human race. Also, Vash DOES change his philosophy at the very end! When he defeats Knives he leaves behind his coat, the pistols, and Wolfwoods cross. Then he looks toward the sky and apologizes to Rem because he cannot possibly live up to her ideals in a violent world like Gunsmoke. He decides that pacifism, while a worthy goal to strive for, isn't worth killing himself over. We don't really get to see what his new outlook on life looks like,, but he DOES change and grow as a character! I'm sorry but how did you not pick up on ANY of the motifs or themes in the show? Again I ask, did you even watch the damn show? And if you actually did and still have these opinions, then I can only assume you like the most basic deadbrained kind of media that is meant to be consumed mindlessly.

    • @mekullag
      @mekullag 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Sqwivig incredibly deep? Main guy doesn´t like shooting people but lives in wild west style world. Cool. Does he ever interact with the world in any meaningful way? Does he find interesting solutions to his problems or ever make a coherent argument for pacifism? No. He´ll run away if he can, if he can´t he´ll engage in non-lethal ways and if the enemies are robots, he´ll shoot them. Not a single interesting concept to be found anywhere. Thematic cohesion is hardly praiseworthy if it comes from an unchanging narrative and static characters.
      Why do you think it´s a good argument to say he was made an unengaging and boring main character on purpose? His writer sucks too then, I guess. Does it make a difference if I shit my pants because I´m drunk or as a political statement against government overreach when you´re sitting next to me on the bus?
      And no, hinting at a character going in a new direction after the finale in the last frames of your show does not make that character any more interesting or the show any better. Especially if that development is just outside influence forcing the characters hand once more.
      If there was anything resembling an interesting motif it would have been the jesus vs devil vibes the two brothers were giving off, fighting over whether or not man is good and worth saving. But that never goes anywhere because there are no interesting interactions ever, only cliché dialog and uninspired conflict and episode after episode that could be left out completely and you wouldn´t even notice. I´d be willing to bet if you showed someone all episodes except for the last few in random order, people wouldn´t even be able to tell something was off. Of course that makes a lot of sense if you want people to be able to turn on their TV at any random point in the story, watch an episode and be able to understand the characters and story. A desired outcome at a time where on-demand watching was not a thing and people got into new shows by randomly happening upon an episode of that show. But it still makes for a decidedly worse show overall.
      I feel like I´m doing the show right when I say that it might make for a good two hour movie. Clearly that´s me acknowledging that there are good things about the show, that might shine if distilled from all the boring time waste surrounding it. If you disagree though, be my guest and actually explain not just why the show is so deep (i.e. don´t just repeat what happens in the show, but explain what they´re saying with it that I´m apparently missing), but also why it profits from its bloated runtime.

    It's still fresh in my head, this was the first anime I ever watched as a kid. I remember I was 8 years old flipping through channels and this show pops up about a cool looking dude who could dodge bullets and be zany. There were no subtitles but I didn't care I watched it in Japanese and followed it every week it came on. Later on I was blown away when I was introduced to dubbed anime and was overjoyed to see Trigun in the list. It was initially off putting to hear their English voices, but now I cannot unhear them or imagine more perfect voices for them :) I really wish Trigun could've done just as well back in Japan as it did in the U.S. so it could get the FMA Brotherhood treatment and adapt the series in its entirety including Trigun MAXIMUM. Glad we had the movie Badlands Rumble as a little something for the fans out there and I suppose it's the closest we'll ever see of the series with updated animation.

    Vash's ability to remain humble even in the darkest of times really resignated with me as a kid and I saw him as a truly lucky individual.
    As an adult who's rewatched the show. It has become apparent that Vash creates his own luck and his humility isn't just humility but a mix between humility and absolute kindness. For Knives saw himself as a God amongst men. Vash saw himself as a protector and friend of men.

    I watched Trigun three years ago, and it was one of the best anime series I've ever watched in my entire life. Seeing Vash struggle with himself, even at the worst possible moments, is what made Trigun so enjoyable. He's not the usual happy-go lucky hero, he's a man who went through so much hell since childhood, and he consistently has to hide behind the goofy persona to reel in the pain he feels inside.
    Also props to Johnny Yong Bosch, whose first anime voiceover role is Vash himself. He is so perfect for the character, especially in all his comedic moments.

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yep, Vash is the pinnacle of the "carefree" protagonists, because of that flip of the trope. It's so much more crushing of a story, knowing what's really behind his smile. And, agreed on the props to Bosch as well, the Vash laugh is iconic 🤣

    This show is one of the three which I cannot stop returning to. I bought it on a whim when I was 17, and I've never stopped relating to Wolfwood and our $$60,000,000,000 Man. It's hopeful, moody, gorgeous and has my most gut-wrenching moment in anime nestled within. Having watched Stampede, now, it makes me all the more thankful '98 Trigun was made when it was. I'm not a fan of 3D anime, for mostly the fact that it overrelies on the 3D plane and doesn't use classic 2D design to guide viewers, but it's more than that. Stampede feels very cynical and unfun by comparison, and while there is levity, it tries to horrify so much that the delicate emotional balance of Trigun just is lost in the noise. I had a decent enough time watching it, but Trigun will never be topped for me. ❤️🤞

    I remember when I was 14 years old watching adult swim and stayed up past midnight just to watch Trigun. Til this day the most terrifying villain in anime is Legato Bluesummers. The music the voice, I had legit nightmares of this Traitor to humanity.

    I’m totally biased when it comes to trigun. I was at my brothers place in Corona CA when I first actually binged stuff for the first time on Netflix. Back when it was on Netflix lol. It completely drew me in. Idk I always felt this was top ranked with all the other classics. It’s underrated but I love that about it. Definitely deserves recognition

    On the note of comparisons to Cowboy Bebop, a lot of grimey nerds like to insult Trigun by calling it a knock-off or "the poor man's Cowboy Bebop."
    Cowboy Bebop began in April 1998
    Trigun began in 1995

    I'm glad you described it as "slow burn". Because it really is. Especially compared to the manga. But I think that's what made the anime great. I would even personally rank it higher compared to the manga, just because it lays the feel, style, and mystery pretty thickly. And it takes its time with it too, not shying away from fillers. And I love it for that.
    I do wish more of the content from the manga got into the anime though. The cut ones are pretty bonkers IMHO.

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm honestly looking myself; nothing quite matches their deep exploration of a human trait with that range of optimism each holds (Bebop being the least optimistic, but still somewhat I think). Black Lagoon similarly explores the weakness of people like Eva, but with more the physicality of Bebop, but it's not that close to either. Sonny Boy is a recent pick that's very surreal, like EoTV, but less heavy on action, and has a quite reserved optimism

    I washed trigun 98 cuz a friend wanted me to watch it cuz she thought I would like it. The interesting this is that while i enjoyed it alright i wasnt really interested in the anime until the end there the backstory is revealed. If not for the fact that I was watching it with a friend I dont think I would finish it.
    I'm so glad I did.
    After finishing 98 anime, left with more questions then answer I dig deeper. Read the manga, watched the movie and 23 adaptation. I loved them all. Tbh at first I thought I liked the manga and stampede more then 98. Stampede sure did a lot better job at geting me interested. Its first episodes gives you just enought questions and just enought answers to keep you interested and asking for more in a good way.
    Manga ofc has a lot more to work with being a lot longer and it gives as a lot more of the story and more on the topic of the plants (which I was and am very interested in). it also actually has some knives in it which just. I love this man so much. Am literally making myself a crocheted plushie of him.
    And after all that i ended up rewatching 98 anime with another friend. and I realized that it has something that manga and stampede doesnt have as much. something that I realized I enjoy a whole lot.
    Just vash influencing normal peoples lifes. Idk why but I love it so much. The movie shows it great too (let's ignore vash being a fucking creep there). Just... Vash has lived on this planet for 150 years. Since the start of humans living there. Just watching him interacting with this world. changing things just a bit. Without focusing so much on the tragedy that his life is and his relationship with knives...
    I wish we got more of the gang just... living. getting in shenanigans. Helping people. hurting people. People helping them. people hurting them. Just see the way they interact with the world. I wish knives got a chance in it too. Got a chance to experience life as a whole. will all the good parts too and not just the fear and pain he experienced.
    So yea. I like 98 anime way more then I first did. Idk how about other people but it really was better for me after reading the manga. And that's not to say it was bad on the first watch. it still was a lot of fun (jusr gonna ignore the typical for old anime pervert level).
    and just. I realy love marlon. I'm so glad he got included in the manga. Marlon you silly goose I love you. I hope you found a reason to live

    Hey you're excellent at your articulation but I feel like your video would have been more engaging if you switched to 7 minutes and used short clips to help emphasize your points. One thing sbout Trigun is that just like Cowboy Bebop, the English dub is amazing and honestly ahead of it's time. I feel like if you had a few seconds where your viewers could hear and see the anime, it would make them want to watch it more.
    Also, Trigun has an undertone of Christianity, and the creator of the series actually converted to Christianity(iirc. Feel free to fact check me.) There are similarities between Michael and Lucifer, and Vash and Knives, respectively. The space ship they were on was like the garden of Eden, and the idea of original sin came from the butterfly and the spider. I know Knives didn't ger much screentime, but I feel like you could have done him more justice as an antagonist. The dynamic between the two brothers was a prettt big part of the series, even if the scenes including the teo od them were far and few.
    No offense at all, but I feel like a show this complex can't be compellingly explained in 6 minutes without adding in some audio for context, and although you explained the general plot well, you missed some very important nuances about the implied existence of God and Angels (called Plants in the show). I say this because I want to show Trigun to my dad, who thinks anime is for kids and doesn't see the value of the adult themes that exclude vulgarity or violence. I don't think this video would have compelled him to watch Trigun, but people who do watch anime would probably give Trigun a shot after watching this video (no pun intended.) Maybe ask yourself if you want your video to speak to anime fans specifically, or include people who don't watch anime and want a convincing reason to check one out.
    Try adding some audio from the show next time and see if there are any little things you could say that would make your video feel more like an actual video review and less like you just talking about it. Your personality completely eclipsed Vash's in this video, but the video wasn't about you, and Vash as a character is part of what makes Trigun incredible. I hope that makes sense, and you seem like a really cool person. If I read your words instead of listened, I would have probably said you did a great job writing a synopsis. But I do think that for video reviews and summaries, you should include Audio from the show to bring the characters to life and let the art speak for itself.
    Overall great job and thank you! I actually usually don't leave feedback, but you have great potential, an awesome vocabulary, and a pleasant speaking voice, so I wanted to give an honest opinion.

    Took me years to watch it. It was a very dark series. I enjoyed it. Christian beliefs. Guy is looney and a man of peace. Made he did not smash Merryl. Funny and heartfelt.

    I said it once I'll say it again, Hollywood literally should have used this as thier start to live action adaptation. It's literally American inspired anime.

      It is one that could translate well to live action. The dusty, run down, and nondescript Gunsmoke makes for a manageable setting, unlike it's cousin Bebop and literal space, and most of it could be done in a down to earth way, with flourish saved for the scenes where it's needed. At the end of the day, I'd rather have a "remake," really just polishing up and modernizing the animation, but I'll take anything new for Trigun

    This anime alongside evangelion is what brought me to realize that anime isn’t just dragonball and pokemon.
