Nato urged to update training for Ukrainians as Russia makes gains

  • A Russian victory over Ukraine will become more likely unless Nato and Kyiv can outlearn Moscow, warns a retired Australian Army major general.
It is feared that Moscow is now "outlearning" Kyiv and Nato, while Ukraine is suffering from shortages of soldiers and ammunition.
Major General Mick Ryan, who served in the Australian army for 35 years, explained how Russia's advantages in terms of industrial mobilisation, drone technology and electronic warfare could lead to a victory for Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The main issue is that the West builds all combat doctrine on air superiority. Clearing a minefield is easier when the enemy positions can't respond because they have been bombed for weeks and their ability to observe, orient and react has been destroyed or degraded from the air. Without the tools in the air, Ukraine is left to fight a war in a way the west would not fight a war.

Training excersizes being offered are about give and take learning. Russia's economy faces significant long term issues, foremost inflation requiring double digit interest rates, and labour shortages. Producing huge amounts of weaponry makes your GDP numbers look good, and for those employed in military enterprises, it's a boon. However such a course is not without pitfalls. For one the weapons industries soak up huge amounts of investment, while the productive economy, which produces things that people want and need to live an enjoyable and productive life, is starved for investment and has to compete for scarce labour. All this drives up prices further. Basically Russia can only keep this up for a year or two at most. And they know it too, as their budgets call for military spending to be dramatically reduced in 2025 and 2026.

The fact is that Russia has a very large and fully in their control Military Industrial Complex (MIC). Whatever Ukraine has is tiny in comparison and only partially under their control. That means that any improvements or upgrades to weapons/equipment/ammo needed for Russia after battlefield experiences, is immediately presented to their MIC who get onto it right away. Ukraine does not have this, and even telling western MIC's what is needed will largely fall on deaf ears. That means that going forward, Russian stuff will get better and better whiles Ukraines will stay largely the same. As an example, this would be like Ukraine fighting the air battles in WWII in 1945 with the same Spitfires that fought the Battle of Britain in 1940. While Russia will have the roughly 4-5 times upgraded Spitfires of 1945.

It doesn't need to have the best gun, nor the best armour, nor the best mobility. But a nice balance of all three. In WWII, the Soviet T34 probably came the closest to that ideal. well, Ukraine didnt listen to the suggestions on how to conduct the Zaporizhia offensive, and they spread out their attacks thinking russians were as demotivated as in Kharkiv. Obviously didnt happen and they made pretty much no gains, while loosing their best equipment and newly trained in the west soldiers. While NATO does prepare with air superiority in mind, They have been studying what is happening in Ukraine for 2 years now, and Im pretty sure they know what to do, even without being there physically. Ukraine thought they could do better, they lost the offensive and now they are relegated to what they were taught decades ago and they are fighting the same war as russians. The West has foolishly interpreted its victories over non-industrial countries into a doctrine. Against Russia, the tricks and techniques of smart weaponry are not only equalled but outmatched through electronic warfare techniques that disable and spoof the GPS-reliant weaponry of the West. Even claims of an air-superiority led approach are not guaranteed success, as not only does Russia have very impressive battle-field air defence networks, the large geographic spread of Ukrainian territory dilutes the effectiveness and reach (typically Western single-engined fighter aircraft have shorter ranges) of an air campaign combined with the vulnerability of airfields to missile-based attacks.
At end, this is an industrial war much like WW2, the side that runs out of material (and labour) resources to fight is the side that loses, much like Germany ran out of these resource inputs to drive its war industry.

    Brilliant!
Which is why The West must adapt our economies to the strategic endeavour.
China’s already said that “she wants it”.
Which means we ALL need to be ready to be “all guns blazing”.
Now, we’d all “hope” that it doesn’t come to that. But, “hope” is a bit late when “the boyz” come knocking…

Modern warfare without nukes/mass aircraft deployment takes years and a lot if that is the time it takes to build up a stockpile to attempt the great breakthrough. 50,000 tanks takes a long time to build. 5,000 aircraft take a long time to manufacture. Setting up 100,000,000 shells per year of artillery capacity takes time.

We need some serious improvements in oversight & accountability, too many institutions are inundated with hubris, incompetence, greed, and corruption… this includes the military & the manufacturing/suppliers associated. People profit through failure, leadership insulates itself, we must demand better, some heads should roll!

If Ukraine conserved as much as possible.
Ukraine has shown when they don't pay for equipment they use bullets like kids use sweets.
    Conserve Ammo
    Use heavy weapons more effectively.
You wouldn't use a RPG to take out a random soldier.
Heavy weapons for heavy weapons TANKS, HEAVY ARMOURED VEHICLES ect.
    Light for light infantry.
Heavy weapons and artillery for their use.
Ukraine needs to ramp up ammo/Shell production massively.
And learn how to make ammo last ages.
It was claimed Ukraine Is using more ammo than the west can provide.

Fundamentally Russia can regenerate it's forces with 10k recruits a month and significantly higher production on top of vastly larger stockpiles of simple ammunition than the West. This allows Russia to do rotations and training allowing Russia to apply continuous pressure.
Compare this to Ukraine. Their two main weaknesses currently is lack of manpower especially in infantry and munitions. Manpower wise the initial surge of volunteers are dead, disabled or exhausted from lack of meaningful rotations. This is resulting in very low manning in frontline units with 25% being mentioned in some articles. Ukraine isn't moving at all fast to fix this. A revised conscription bill failed a month ago and despite this being a known problem for months nothing has been done. What has been done has been counter productive with anticorruption drives firing heads of recruitment centres resulting in recruitment centres then failing to work reducing the pipeline even further. Ukraine has a stark choice on manpower. Either do universal male conscription now or if that's not palatable then withdraw the maximalist ceasefire goals of retaking all 2014 territory and agree to a status quo ceasefire with the hope of rebuilding. In the meantime they probably need to review how many people are in rear area positions and send a portion of these to train for the frontline.
Munitions wise this has gotten a lot of press but is somewhat a red herring. Lack of US supplies is extremely damaging sure but the basic is that the stockpiles of what Ukraine needs in the West started off not great and now are at minimum stocking levels so all that can be sent is current production which is charitably no more than 3-4k shells a day for the next 6 months. Ukraine cannot therefore make up for lack of manpower through overwhelming firepower which appears to be their fantasy plan at the moment. They therefore need to dig in hard to try to counter some of the firepower and pick their battles. As an aside, there's nothing stopping Europe buying the US shells they've presumably produced into stockpile and sending them to Ukraine apart from economic nationalism. For future production, the West is great at high tech but it's industrial base for high volume production is pretty awful in the defence and civilian side. This bodes extremely poorly for significant ramping up of production.
Finally this situation is very reminiscent of WW1. 1914 was the year of significant volunteer enthusiasm, 1915/1916/1917 were industrial build up and transitioning from a small volunteer force to a conscript force and the new troops learning their craft. This is where we're at now so we'll have to see whether the Russian advances post Avdiivka fall are a trend showing a breaking of the stalemate or whether they'll run out of steam soon.
