at 14 i dropped out of music theory classes and never rlly encountered an accessible entry point for me to pick it up again on my own. i am so so grateful for you reopening up this world for me in this lighthearted yet substantial way. thank you 🌷
I love how you broke down everything as a teacher of piano myself. Really great pacing and would very helpful to those going through TH-cam University for the first time. I wanna see sequels on seventh chords and harmony.
There was a music theory video that was 30 mins long, but I always ended up falling asleep. This video caught up with my attention span! I liked that you didn't recommend any specific exercises. I practiced so much more by just messing around and having fun.
I’ve been teaching my student about pentatonics on the guitar. It absolutely rocked his world when I told him that you can play it in whatever order however you want to, and it will still sound good. I use pentatonics when I play live all the time cause it’s easier to improvise different keys faster with it
as someone who is trying to learn everything music, im really glad i only was able to learn 1 thing from this video because it shows me how much ive grown in the last few years, and shows even restudying the basics can show me more
I am actually the cross section of musician and NoMad fan and this was the best intro to music theory I've seen on TH-cam ever. Everything else is where it gets complicated but this was very succinct ÷)
Dooood this is the simplest breakdown i love it. Future musicians are gonna pe cracked because of people like you! Kudos. Took me years to learn and comprehend this stuff
I already own a guitar and contemplated whether I should buy a keyboard or not. Now I'm gonna buy one after watching your video. Thanks for the crash course!
I only read the description (saving the watching for a bit later), and I'm SOOOOO with you, buddy! I'm a complete amateur in music theory (I started truly diving in only a month ago), and I agree so much. "At this point we should probably just do a clean slate" ABSOLUTELY! The simple fact that the first note of an octave is C should be a sign that something is wrong with the very foundations of music theory. ANYONE IN THE WORLD would think of A as the start, because It's FRIGGIN A, the first letter of the alphabet! And black keys? White keys? All I see is keys! Why do we treat C#, D# and the rest differently??? It would make a piano a bit larger if there were only white keys, sure, but playing one chord type would require the exact same finger position no matter which root, which would make it easier to play. It also makes a beginner feel like C#, D# and so on have a special, common thing together, but they don't (or maybe I'm missing it?). They're just different "audio colors". It's like colors were called "Red dot" instead of blue, "yellow dot" instead of green.... EDIT : Finally watched it. That is a GREAT reminder of concepts, and definitely not a video to _learn_ music theory. It's for people who already know the vocabulary but may not understand it all. And for that case, it's perfect! I had never realized the link between the black keys and the pentatonic scale!
Wow great summary of the basics, sometimes experienced musicians make the theory stuff seem overly complicated, and though it can be once you go down the rabbit hole, overall I'd say the fundamental notions are pretty easy to understand. Also I completely agree that this is basically all you need to start making music, hopefully this helps newcomers who might feel overwhelmed. If anyone asks me about music theory again imma redirect them to his video lol
ive already taken a bit of theory and i must say, this video is awesome. Easy to wrap your head around and its just fun. Good stuff, you may have a new sub
Thanks so much for making this video. I really like music and this might be my first step on learning about it. You deserve much more than just this as this was a great introduction. I kept waiting for some time in which I could watch this video without being stressed or having major interruptions as I really wanted to watch this and now that I did it feels so good. I hope everything goes well on your channel and you get to perform well in what you like.
before i saw this on my recomended I was searching up tutorials on nettspend songs on piano because I have a big expensive classical piano in my house I never used
@4:53-.-And this is why I hate music theory. All of it's terminology and standards seem to do nothing but obscure what's going on under the hood instead of clarifying it. These two cords are objectively completely different, and yet, because of both the musical alphabet and keyboard arrangement standards, they end up looking the same. It makes different things seem similar and similar things seem different, and that is just objectively bad!
NoMad: here's how music works Drummers: uhhhhhh, what? All jokes aside this is an impressive video, I know you're a smart guy but you always play so goofy in most of your videos that (as a musician and an educator) I was shocked to see you explaining all of this so well, you should make more of these bro
Well now that you’re a music theory professional can you please make a 3 and a half hour long video condescendingly explaining to me why Whiplash actually sucks
The big lie of modern times: there's a way to take the stuff people used to have to work at and make it easy. You can absorb 4 years of college in 10 minutes for free! Learn to play the piano with four easy chords. A lot of people thinik this. That's why music sucks so hard today. That's why pretty much everything sucks so hard today. Knowledge that matters takes TIME to absorb, and it includes complexities and DETAILS-- sorry, kids. It takes work to get good.
Why is the C2 not a C3? If you start at the beginning of the piano and go from C - B then by that rule what you're saying is the C2 would actually be the third C, so why is it not a C3?
The story goes like this: ”sometime entirely understandable BUUT we add a little something that makes it entire incomprehensible”. Repeat this pattern for 12 minutes there goes this video. PS this criticism is about me and not the creator of the video.
Not bad. Would have been worth mentioning that was just *Major* Pentatonic that you played - ie isn’t the only pentatonic scale - and the ‘flats’/Gb part at the end would have been confusing for noobs I think (sounded like F# should always be referred to as Gb?!), but a pretty good crash course, i thought! 🙃
piano is just kinda used as a visual aid for music theory every other instrument follows the same theory, the placement of notes on the instrument is the only difference
The empty bottle of alcohol on the shelf really says a lot about a musicians mind.
hell yeah
That hits home.

I’ve been watching your stuff for a couple months and had no idea this great video was yours until I looked at my screen.
Great stuff man, really impressive.
Same. I nearly skipped over it til I saw it was NoMad
I am now an accomplished musician and I’m going to perform at Live Aid tomorrow. Thank you NoMad.
no, it starts with
one thing I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme to explain in due time
All I know, time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day, the clock ticks life away
It's so unreal, didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Tryna hold on, did-didn't even know
I wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mockin' me
Actin' like I was part of your property
Rememberin' all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so far
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then, but it all comes back to me in the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this, there's only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this, there's only one thing you should know
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I thought he was gonna say it...
But then you saved the day

If nomad made more music theory videos I'd love that tbh
I have a theory that best musicians have ADHD because people with ADHD can make anything so much harder than it needs to be.
I'd like to think he drank that whole bottle of Hennessey before making this video
