Huh. Never really thought about it before now but recently (few months? a year?) I keep adding stuff to my watch later playlist that sounds really good and interesting but a lot of the times I end up getting bored a third of the way through and just click off the video. You just made it make sense.

Only children watch these video essays. Children and losers. People who get riled up over stuff no grown adult cares about. But I do find Wendigoon to be more passionate in his approach what with his hippy vibe and his Christian influence. The rest are complete and utter garbage mostly. Why are some of them edited as though they where 1million dollar TH-cam poops? Or just pseudointellectualism with Persona 5 music. Full of wacky generalizations and no real opinions. Just utter slop with no educational value.

Great video! Very well structured and it was a good watch. I agree with a lot of your opinions about my intros. It’s always kind of a headache balancing projects and sponsorships and it does bother me that it can detract from the experience. The issue is most brands have it baked into the contract that the ad will be placed in the first 5 minutes of the video. Because of that I’ve decided to start offsetting personal things like merch or tours until later in the runtime but for the sponsors, not a lot can be done. This is great criticism and it’s really useful to hear good faith feedback.

Yknow whos also pretty bad and gets way too many views? Tuv, his videos are always poorly done. With sentences cut off due to editing. He also barely investigates what he talks about. And it seems to me like hes stealing his "content". Oh, and lets not forget the endless plugs and sponsers. Hes also just boring and bland to watch, he makes music but it litteraly sucks ass. His clothing brand looks super fucking cheap. And then his thumbnails. Dude is so full of himself

I barely have any energy to fart and some people out here pouring all of their time and effort on defending or degrading a celebrity. I scroll IG reels for 15 minutes and my brain felt rotten beyond repair. How the f people didn't get bored from watching the same short shit on tiktok and Instagram for six years?

I feel like every video essay wastes my time. First third is an intro to the video, then there’s a long sponsor, and then the last half or third of the video is just summarizing the media or idea they’re talking about, instead of saying anything interesting or new.

I do feel like the future of the essay genre will be watching random videos being recommended without following a specific creator, it feels that essayists have a middle point in their career where they still have passion for their work, there’s not as newbie and amateur and hasn’t completely sold out maybe it will go back to medium to low channels.

I've definitely been put off by Wendigoon recently, just the whole entire feel has been shifted, the higher "quality," being more edited, the lengthy sponsors, the change in his personality, his older stuff is better by far, and it kinda sucks because he doesnt have that many uploads

SunnyV2's transformation is really wild. If you take a look at his earlier videos, he's actually speaking on camera about things he cares about. Now granted, it's still drama content, but it does seem genuine. Then somewhere along the way he just gets lost in the sauce and starts mass-producing slop.

I’ve been teaching my student about pentatonics on the guitar. It absolutely rocked his world when I told him that you can play it in whatever order however you want to, and it will still sound good. I use pentatonics when I play live all the time cause it’s easier to improvise different keys faster with it

The big lie of modern times: there's a way to take the stuff people used to have to work at and make it easy. You can absorb 4 years of college in 10 minutes for free! Learn to play the piano with four easy chords. A lot of people thinik this. That's why music sucks so hard today. That's why pretty much everything sucks so hard today. Knowledge that matters takes TIME to absorb, and it includes complexities and DETAILS-- sorry, kids. It takes work to get good.

I used to be a big fan of Ryth, but about a year ago I realized hes like really sexist and homophobic, +really rude for pretty much no reason at this point. he just screams cusses into his mic and tells 12yr old slenders to sub to him, and he js gets a bunch of views 4 that. its so f^cking frustrating ngl

Looks like we've already got both those sections tagged in that Wendigoon video with SponsorBlock. I'd tag the intro too, but we're not supposed to exclude sections with actual information. I put off installing this plugin for quite a while cause I assumed it would overfit to sponsors that piqued my interest, but it's actually highly customizable in case you want to choose whether to skip with a key press or just get an overview of what sections are there with the color-coded play bar at a glance. In fact the only thing I have set to auto skip is non-music sections of music videos

i over all agree with your point, but the first example you used is wrong imo. the guy is quinton reviews and his whole shtick is making absurdly long videos (like his april fools 38 hour long video about the hilliebillies). he yaps so much because this is what his viewers expect, his videos arent really video essays, more so a REALLY long podcasts to fall asleep to. love your work besides that!
