- Howdy, today I’m going to show you the best and cheapest way to seal or waterproof your roof rack bolts to prevent and water leaks during rain. During this process I’ll also be cleaning off the roof grime that the previous owner let build up.
Most after market roof racks won’t take this into consideration so it’s important to check to ensure you don’t mess up any internal electrical devices.
Materials used:
Socket wrench - $10 52 pc set at Walmart - make sure the kit you get has sizes, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm. Some kits skip some of these.
Permalex Silicon - Black Adhesive Sealant
Basic brush - just needs to be standard bristles, you don’t want to damage your outer coat
Simple green - make sure you get the all-purpose cleaner and not the concentrate
Try bug and tar remover next time instead of simple green. It does most of the work for you. 🙌🏼
You don't have to wait for a rainfall to test it out - just get out your hose. Then you can make fixes on the spot if need be.
Good point! Works great tho!!
it’s hard to replicate rainfall with a hose, but doesn’t hurt to try
Were you finding water leaking into your interior? Im wondering if my interior leak is caused by a roof rack
Yes! This fixed it
How do you get the holes on there
On the roof? They’re already there. It’s where the roof rails/ racks screw in.
@@richardson_adventures oh it’s cause I’m trying to put some one my car but there was no original holes and idk how to bolt it on there
@@king-vn6fb you could probably drill some!
No thread sealer? Seems odd. Water will go straight down the bolts without it
I’ve never had another problem with water. The factory bolts already have some thread sealer on them and everything I’ve read says you don’t need more. Might be situational though.
