Oddworld Soulstorm is an action adventure game complete with crafting, scavenging, platforming, and sneaking. Similar to its predecessor, the game is a 2.5D side-scrolling platform game. Protagonist Abe returns in the game and his goal is to save his friends. The game features a new crafting system in which Abe can craft and customize different weapons. While the game is mostly linear, it features a massive train hub area where players can access new levels and areas.

Oddworld needs to bite the bullet and just turn this into an animated series. The story is so captivating, and I've been waiting almost two decades to see this "quintology" play out. I understand the passion for wanting to make video games, but this world they've built has become so grand and I'd love to see it fully realized.

I think they should make it a mix of movies, shows, and books if they really want to fully realize the potential pf something likebthis

I love that half the reason for Abe’s success here is that the Gluks blame each other and don’t believe what is actually going on.
Their own arrogance makes his mission easier.

If you look at the translation Big Head does when burns the doll of Mulluk, it actually seems like this was part of a curse to cause this to happen.
You would be surprised by what underestimating folks will do. When you have deluded yourself into believing you're superior and others are inferior when they disprove your beliefs you will be shocked.
I know Oddworld was never exactly wholesome, but to hear someone swearing in Oddworld takes me by surprise since we rarely hear it.
They said 'bastard' in exodus. And a few of the mudokans said 'pissed' in munch's odyssey
In Munch’s Oddysee you could hear Sligs swear (censored with beeps) if you interracted with them as a possesed Slig, right before they start beating you.
While in Stranger’s Wrath, Stranger says that the Doc is full of sh*t (uncensored)

That pilot slig is interesting to me, sligs don't often show kindness for others, let alone they're own kind, but when mullok made fun of the sligs that couldn't stop abe, pilot slig said that was harsh. also when mullok was feeling down about his yaht, the pilot tried to cheer him up. pilot slig feels like the "abe" of his species.
Well one of the ending had him killed while the other where they run to the yayman or something.
Pilot Slig is a lot more intelligent and emotionally mature than most of his kind. I hope we get to see more of him as Mulluck's Right-Hand man.
And let's not forget, he practically extorted a Glukkon when it came to worker's benefits. Absolute MadLad.

I guess that slig is closer of mullok than the others.
Although, he heared and probably witness about what his collegues have been through when Abe take control of them (mind control in some sort). At this moment, he got some remorse and pity about it and become more friendly, knowing that death is not as funny as it seems.
Looks like the Pilot needs a name all his own, and I have the perfect one for him: "Saul".
Poetic how the Glukkons adamantly believed their own lie that Mullock was betraying them, and because of that, it became the truth!
Lorne Lanning (creator of Oddworld Inhabitants) made all cutscenes to look so cinematic because he plans to make Oddworld movie he planned years ago...so with very cinematic lookin cutscenes he wants to show potential of Oddworld movie...
It looks more like he made a movie and converted it into a video game

I've never played the game, I have no idea what the background info is, and so I am not part of any fandom of this game but I found a TH-cam reel of this, and went to watch this video and yeah, I want a movie.
This entire video was high quality, well made, and had fantastic characters outside of the antagonist's impractical body shape. I would go to the theaters to watch whatever this game is.
Tl;Dr I have zero context or bias for the game and agree that based off the cutscenes this would have made a great film.

Eh it was funny to me
Abe is a perfect view of an everyman character who is tasked with toppling an empire with but a few friends and whatever Deus Ex Machina is helping him. In spite of the silly and goofy antics, his story is quite depressing. His heroisim is filled with sacrifice and especially pain, every gain is pain of a magnitude only few can imagine. Much of it would only be at the end of endurance and the edge of death. But in spite of it he gets back up and he keeps going in spite of the odds. Their saving grace is the guards are stupid and lazy and their overlords are not much better. In fact, part of that saving grace is they think it more plausible that one of their own would betray them rather than have a belief that a mere slave would be able to defy them.
An amazing and lore rich story that I just love, so much world building.
It’s such an interesting plot line. You don’t see a lot of storylines like this in current popular media cause they seem too busy too be preaching rather then telling an engaging story
For an alien he acts really damn human. I love it
The whole world of oddworld is anti-capitalist.
The characters are all representing a member of the pyramid of the capitalism :
The gluckons are the highest class. They are the one who represents the big bosses, the one who maintain their buisness and the one who profit the most.
The slugs are the middle classe. They are representing the authority and the oppression tool used by the upper classes.
The species of abe (I don't remember their name) are the lowest class. They are the gears of the factory, the one who are stuck in these polluted prison to make all of the dirty work for nothing but sweat and pain.
Their saving grace is the decay caused by corruption and paranoia. An empire filled to the brim like that is only a fit bad hits from collapsing. Abe and his friends are the ones tasked with toppling the empire
Right off the bat, when he says, "I dont know how to help you."
I love that line and the entire scene from a writing perspective. Hate it from a sensitive viewer's perspective lol but still. It hits so hard and carries so much more meaning than just the fact of mortality. Its the internalized notion that he is supposed to be the hero, and the hero is supposed to be super strong, and brave, and exceptional and theyre supposed to save everyone.
But thats not what heroism is. Its like you've said: tragic.
And so begins the lesson in which he'll learn that.

I love that Abe, even when talking to Alf, turns to Toby because he knows he's listening.
And Toby when he is thinking stops messing with dials before he chimes in.

It's a small thing, but the way the Brewmaster is animated here - the bewilderment on his face - is the kind of attention to detail in these cutscenes that I appreciate so so much. Absolutely fantastic
Exactly! I'm totally in love with these cutscenes!!! Please take a moment to appreciate minute 1:07:09 if you haven't already. It's that subtle muscle movement of Aslik's facial expression hinting at pride, satisfaction and trust! It's my favourite detail in this movie... The characters look so alive and expressive!
I realized that because Mudokans are the closest to resembling humans, it feels more heartbreaking when they get hurt and not the Glukkons or Sligs.
Seeing them in such high fidelity gives me a much greater appreciation for the design of the mudokans. Alien yet familiar.
I remember them being likened to featherless birds.

@@RedouaneSebbar I am a 2D game arts student, so by all means I am no expert. But from the little 3D I have studied, this is still remarkable.The scene at 1:08:00 alone, showing the suspension railway, is breathtaking for a game employing cartoonish, if gruesome, environments. This very old frachise started as a stylised platformer and still doesn't have the ambition to recreate 3D realism, but I think the generation gap was well translated with this 3D work. I cannot imagine what more they could have done with the limitations imposed by the style. What is it that you identify as early ps4 and what did you expect from a ps5 game, if I may ask?

No what i meant was taking in to account that is a next gen game console and to have flat facing fire like in 7:55 is kind of autrageous. I feel al lot of outdated ways of moddeling have been used is some place. Or the lack of bumpmap in the wood and the visible blocky inside of the hand. this place 37:40 when abe touches the wood. It looks like early lest gen or even late ps3. I feel like we have seen much better 3D in last gen consoles (let alone pc). Maybe the game had to be finished asap for launch with the new consoles.

I just realized that the Brewmaster's assistant is one of outlaw race instead of a slig.
At first i thought it was a Chronicler, due to the "supress rumours" line, but looking at the original storyboards for Soulstorm, it shows that there are actual Wolvarks instead of Sligs, in that scene where the burning train is entering the factory.

What's amazing about this game. This seems just like a normal movie. Its super fucking good. The animation seems like something just from an AAA animated movie studio.

The strangest thing I have ever seen from an Oddworld game was the raisin, now it’s a little beetle with multiple pairs of breasts.

I read somewhere that sligs are naturally gentle creatures, so I like to think the pilot slig is one of his species who mostly resisted the bio-modifications and indoctrination, hence why he's more empathetic than most.

Would be an impactful twist if what Abe saw in his vision was actually a future where the liberated Mudokons became even MORE cruel and oppressive than the Gluks. Amidst the sudden freedom and power they gained they lost their way and became corrupt, selfish and hateful.
A hard but important lesson to teach from our own history of overthrowing oppression.

If i recall, in the original Oddysee Abe found out that, contrary to what he believed, the Mudokans brought their fates onto themselves due to being arrogant, unchanging, and eventually falling so far behind the Glukkons that they willingly subjected themselves into their slavery to survive. But because Abe is a bit mentally stilted, it's difficult for him to fully comprehend this. Ironically, the Mudokans were directly responsible for turning the Glukkons into what they are now.
"Why would they? and "How could they" refer to the knowledge of the Mudokans giving themselves up to become slaves. Because they couldn't produce enough to survive, they needed employment into the Glukkons' thriving factories for food. Abe himself back in New N Tasty lived a life benefiting from this ancient deal as he once loved the Rupture Farm snacks and was proud of being part of their creation until he found out the ugly truth behind it all, and the sheer amount of shame he feels during this reveal is seeing the even bigger picture of everything. The ancient Mudokans were similarly cruel as the Glukkons, just in a different era, and Abe needs to make sure that this history doesn't keep on repeating itself.

That’s Soulstorm brewery
For a game with such eerie themes, endings, settings, music, and characters, i like how cartoony and serious they can look at the same time. From abe’s startled reaction to the door shutting behind him, to mullock explaining his plan to the slig. even the part with brewmaster ranting and morguer and aslick looking at each other pondering what to think. even their more serious emotions are well animated, such as abe’s frustration with the shaman guy and how the keeper feels sorry for abe getting branded. how they made such versatile designs is anyones guess, and should most likely be given more proper though.
The branding was clearly nothing compared to what was implied to be a flood of apocalyptic knowledge surging into his brain.
This is an amazing movie and story. I've never even heard of this before and watched the whole thing. The animation, expressions, story depth, and my gawd, the Gluks blaming each other - perfection!
I wonder who the consumers are? Maybe there are other species that are the Glukkons clientele. Mudokons are slaves. But there have to be some clients that care about potential "PR Nightmares" inherent to that. Glukkon society don't exactly seem to care either way. Maybe on another continent.

By the way, I absolutely love these character animations. I can really feel the fear, the sympathy, and even the amusement in each character's expressions when they show such emotions.
