  • I have found a possible solution to my leaking sealing frame which many of you have as well! The hopefully at least medium term solution is simple and quick. Check it out!

    Rainy season in Florida. My Z has always been garaged and i don't ever recall driving in the rain (I've had it just 3 years), so yesterday i let it sit in a downpour and.... yup, trunk filled with water😢. Pulled the flexible grommet and sure enough the sealing frame is cracked in about the same place as yours. Will use your fix over the 4th and see how i do. I'll try and report back after the repair and another real-world test!

      Sorry! Tell us how it goes.

    You should remove the carpet in the top well so you can see if water is getting past the frame. It may be pooling in there then leaking into the trunk through holes in that area.

      Excellent idea! Better safe than sorry with water intrusion.

    Nice work! I’m glad to see the test come out positive. Given that it is a silicon product, it should hopefully have enough “give” to deal with slight body flexing while driving.
    Of course, I’m still very interested in the long-term solution you keep alluding to….gets my mind thinking about solutions as week.
    Another great video, my friend!

    Good job! Good luck as you drive your Z. It seems to me that someone with robust 3D printing capability could make this part and many other Z3 parts. An opportunity for someone with supportive equipment.

    We had tried 2 types of glue without success then we decided to "weld" it. I've seen black tie wraps used as "welding" rods. We had some plastic shavings that worked

      Off the car I assume? I like the innovation!

    Excellent video!!! There are space on top (aft) of the sealing frame and the bottom(forward) of the sealing frame. Do you happen to know which side may be causing it? May be both? The bottom (forward) side is easy to caulk with a sealant, because of the open access. But the top (aft)side has very narrow space and it difficult to caulk. Your idea of using the gorilla glue with a tube may be a good idea.

      @MomentofZed  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @au1639 thank you! I'd say both, it's cracked so when water gets on it, it flows through the crack

    I looked at a Z3 2.2 2 days a go in the UK. Unfortunately rust next to the battery and right side of the boot (trunk).
    I've been looking at what it could be before making a decision on that car.
    Seems a common issue for Z3's then.

      My guess is leaking sealing frame! Pull the rubber gasket and look for cracks.

    If the top was off, would you consider "plastic welding". I did that on a internal door piece

    • @MomentofZed
      @MomentofZed  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I might, I just worry that the overall piece is weak and should be replaced. Right now there aren't any good options to do so, so... short answer yes. A guy commented in the original video that his is in 18 pieces!

    Happy for you that it worked and the leaks have stopped. Are the rubber grommet strip you pulled out at the top of the video available for purchase anywhere?
