The insight about doing the paint/cosmetic things first is a really good one, and speaks to your maturity and sophistication. I could see some young and headstrong people bucking that idea on "principle," or out of some rebelliousness or class envy, or whatever. You two represent yourselves well and are great teachers by example.

Make sure you check what's in the walls around the windows. So many of these Taiwan trawlers had anything from great framing and fiberglass work to pieces of pallet wood and chopped up roving. Anyplace you find water damage needs to be inspected behind it to make sure you don't leave problems that pop up later. Don't ask how I know :-)

Billy and Sierra, Been watching you since your trawler days. We've got a 1976, 34 foot CHB trawler in Friday Harbor that I've been bringing back from neglect by the previous owner. Trouble is, I'm 75 now and I get tired just watching you two restore that DeFever! Don't forget to take a date-night someplace fun, even though boat work can be a labor of love!

I salute your incredible attention to detail, all the while being sure and certain that the hull and skin are safe as well as pretty.

Try using mineral spirits to remove the vinyl lettering glue. Try to keep it wet for a little bit and then use single edge razor blade to scrape the glue off. Then with a terry cloth rag , wet and scrub the remaining glue residue off. Then wash of any mineral spirts with soap and water. Used this method hundreds of times.

Best glue remover ever, lighter fluid. Dissolves the glue and evaporates completely. Just wet, wait a sec and wipe off. Any residue comes off with soap and water. I use it to remove price labels from noble woods cuz, as you say, finish won’t stick.

Great job guys, so many marina's in Florida turn away live aboard tenants because their boat is not up to the standards of the marina or they don't carry the proper insurance. I guess this is why you see so many sailboats anchored off shore in the Florida Keys. Plus the high cost of a slip rental will derail anyone without a sizable working budget....

I've always had good luck with mineral spirits to get adhesive off, but it's probably too late for that now. As far as the other stuff goes Goof Off will work pretty good on the type of paints they use on boat but I don't recommend it for anything else, it's got too much lacquer thinner in it which removes most paints except for epoxy and urethanes. As far as the painting goes like any paint job the prep is where all of the work is, the painting is just the shiny part. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

You may are good decision on waiting for the right temperature. One year we were so excited to get back in the water we started getting everything ready like we normally do. I decided to get the bottom paint on that way you would have a week or two to cure before going back into the water. The day I get it that night was in the thirties and the afternoon highs were only in the 40s. I was actually wearing a coat and hat doing it. When I was done I looked back and it did not look right. So I figured just give it a couple days to try since it was cold. It never really looked away it had in past seasons but I figure it was good enough to get through the boating season. Let's just say I was wrong. After about 2 months in the water the kids were out swimming around the boat and underneath and that's when they said that I needed to look at something. There were spots where the paint just washed away and I could see where I had sanded the hall before repainting. So I just made it to say him to finish out that year boating season and that would be a project for The following season.
I never did repaint the bottom that's when we decided to move up bigger and just traded the boat in the way it was. Our new broker was telling me what went wrong. He says a lot of people make that mistake and that if I ever wanted to do it again invest in some heat lamps. And that's when my wife chimed in and said there won't be a next time that my husband is retired from painting our boat.
As always I enjoyed watching you guys get things done looking forward to your next episode.

I have considerable sympathy for you two. I went through the same thing last Winter when I sold my powerboat and as part of the deal agreed to get the boat ready to launch. That ended up involving painting/varnishing the entire exterior of the boat after replacing 7 planks on the hull. Did I forget to say the boat was an 86 year old woody? Rebuilding the galley with new counters and varnished mahogany trim, building, varnishing and installing a new table in the main salon and painting/varnishing the cabin sole in the entire boat. Oh yeah, I was working in an unheated shed in Maine. The plus side is that the boat is sold and I won't be doing any of that work again.

Love your videos and I'm happy that your not gonna cut corners and do things the right way. And if you take care of this boat it'll either be a nice keeper or a nice profit maker for your other boat. Either way experience! I'm so proud of you! Keep up the great work!

That is an amazing transformation! I'm not sure if it was just a sunset reflection off the port-light frames or they are actually made of rose-bronze. If so it will look really nice to maintain them as such and not paint them. They can be shined and coated with a slightly abrasive polish and then coated with wax or a polymer protection to slow oxidation.
