    I'm growing some slips from last year's crop in a couple of plastic containers in a fenced in area. Wasn't paying attention and left the gate open and my dog stole one potato and was having a grand time chewing it up in the yard! I did manage to salvage some slips from it and planted them. They're growing just fine, lol.

    When I was a youngun growing up in Cedar Springs, GA. my granddaddy swore by Puerto Riccan Red sweet taters. He would plow them up (with a mule) and we would put them all in a pile. To winter them he would layer them in a mound of dirt with layers of pine straw. When we needed some to eat we'd just dig in the "bank" and pull out what we needed. Man, ain't nothing like a good sweet tater!

      @Lerone Erwin well you can in a way. Every year I miss a few sweet potatoes or pieces of root and in the spring the slips start popping up. I just keep pulling em and putting em where I want until I'm tired of it and just let them do their thing.

    I did an experiment last fall where I took cuttings about 1 foot long in mid September before I pulled the crop from the ground . I put about 15 cuttings in each quart mason jar and filled with water . I left them outside if night temps fell below 40 . Over the winter they didn’t grow a lot but by late February early March they really started growing so I took some more cuttings from them and rooted them in jars and come late April I planted all the rooted cuttings and I didn’t even need all of them . I did it this way because I wasn’t sure if I’d have a hard time finding them in spring 2023 because people were all talking about the possible shortages . It didn’t cost me anything and I’ll never have to buy anymore .

    Thanks for the good overview, this is my second season growing sweet potatoes in my yard. I've watched many videos on sweet potatoes over the past four years during my gardening journey, and nobody has mentioned the sweet potato Weevil, which ended up being a huge problem and ruined my Harvest that was in storage!
    Also of note, sweet potato leaves, being in the Morning Glory family, are highly toxic to dogs! I'm not sure about other pets, but while many other greens are good to add to a dog's diet, sweet potato leaves are not. I highly recommend checking every vegetable from the garden on Google for toxicity for animals.

    How about pocket gophers? I have 3 cats on the job modest 1/2 acre, they eventually nail all of them but major damage can occur before lunch'em.
    (don't even think about growing artichokes without underground gopher cages if you have them, delicacy for the cute cat snacks. I heard even big fig trees get croaked from the lil bastards, only thing that completely eradicates them is flood irrigation most of us don't have)

Growing in pots and not getting good yield in the past but I used more fertilizer and mostly compost this year. A month to go and we’ll see. Hey loves... I have a rather weird question. Last summer (August 2022) I planted two store-bought organic sweet potatoes in a pot. I got three slips/draws and stuck those in my 24" raised bed garden. Now, the original/mother plants were your standard "orange" sweet taters. However, the resulting "fruit" were nearly ALL purple. And I do mean PURPLE! Literally, ONE tater came back with that orange hue. Over 50 good-sized taters were a deep purple. I've eaten a few of them and they are not quite as sweet as the orange "original" tubers, a bit pastier, but overall, they were good eating.
    I'm so confused.
    What the heck is going on here?? Is there a possible disease process happening here? (Zone 10a South Florida, East Coast, Port St. Lucie area.) I thought I was planting clones of the original tuber. These are clearly NOT clones.
    BUT! I have found signs of Fusarium in my Orchids... Could that be the cause of this weirdness?
    I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
    Thank you for all you do!

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  ปีที่แล้ว +1
