    I adore both Summer and Winter Squash. I have grown Sweet Pie Pumpkins the most however. I had a Groundhog problem 2 years ago and out of desperation ...I took off of the vines growing some young green pumpkins, which looked about the size of 8 Ball Zucchini Squash, I knew it was more than likely too young to fully ripen indoors properly. So I took a chance and Breaded them up after I cut them open and sliced them up. The result...It was one of the sweetest most amazing tasting fried squash ever. My picky young son now looks forward to me growing more to make not only for pies and soups...but to fry them young again. I'm going to start experimenting with other types of squash also to see how they are cooked/fried and so on...before they fully mature. Another tip I would like to share.... prune leaves on squash plants to allow for better aeration which lessens the likelihood of powdery mildew and such. And as for keeping away beetles from eating young plants...Onion and garlic plants planted close by and also scraps of skins from both scattered around plants confuses beetles from thinking your Squash plants are something they want to eat. And I love the versatility of Winter Squash and its' long shelf life during the Winter months.

    I am planting red kuri, cushaw(1st year growing), Seminole pumpkin and a very old variety of acorn for the fall. I plant all of these in my corn, mostly the feed corn. I planted the delicatas a few years ago and although I liked them they weren't as productive as my other squash. Since I raise most of my food production and storage are key factors for me. I think you are right, people need to try planting winter squash and they are delicious roasted or grilled.

    I got about 30 varieties of winter squash seeds that I cycle through. This year I planted Delicata, Honeynut, and Cushaw. I have to plant varieties that are vine bore and squash bug resistant and so far so good but I have to say the Honeynut seems to be the most resistant so far. Some varieties I have planted in the past live for a week or two and that’s it. Some varieties are resistant but not very good to eat.

    This year I'm trying the variety "sucrine du berry". This is a kind of butternut from France.
    I also always roast the seeds of pumpkins in the oven. (Soak them first in salt water.) With some varieties you can eat them well with the white shell on it. Otherwise I just spit the shells out. Otherwise, my favorites are pumpkin pie, pumpkin cream soup (with austrian pumpkin seed oil on top! 🥰) and casseroles with pumpkin, onion, bacon, and so on.
    Greetings from Austria!

    I grew golden butta bowl and bush delicata last year. But I started a little too late and a hard freeze killed the plants and ruined the fruit on the vine before they finished growing. Best tasting winter squash I’ve ever had was a small type butternut squash. This year I’m growing autumn frost, tetsukabuto and speckled pup (for pollination). I may plant a fast growing short vine butternut variety for my raised bed.

    We grow the winter squash in our deep mulch garden in areas we are expanding. They are efficient with fertilizer because we only fertilize the base where we planted. We also roast them and feed them to our chickens in the winter to supplement their diet.

    I planted acorn squash this year. And I have a bunch of pumpkin volunteers,and I know why.
    I have that hard compacted clay up north of I-20 between Atlanta and Augusta. We moved here last year,and this soil ain't no account. But the woods out back have plenty of fallen hardwoods that are way too old for firewood. So I dig that out and till it into my beds.
    Well I ran out, and didn't have time to go dig more when I got that bed ready. I had some compost working from last summer and fall. It wasn't really ready, but I figured it was good enough to till in. The Seminole pumpkins my wife bought last fall for the porch were in there, and several volunteered in the early spring, and some made it thru that late frost we had out here too. I figured it was safe. So I amended the bed, about 4' by 12'. I planted corn and beans in the middle 6 or 8 feet, a good stand of about 50 stalks, with some runner beans, like granny always did. And then planets the acorn squash at either end of the bed, hoping they might help with weeds.
    Well dang if I don't have a few squashes volunteering up in that corn. I don't have the heart to cull them, but I worry they'll try to climb my poor corn. I guess we'll see.
    Anyhow, I appreciate you.

      Ever tried planting about a month late? If they can't find anything to eat in your garden, over wintering squash bugs will have to go someplace else. I don't generally plant squash until mid June just for that reason.

      Some years for me is terrible. This year is not as bad. I do spray about every 3 days with Dawn soap. I also rotate other insecticides, some organic and sometimes synthetic. 7 dust helps keep bugs away but I hate using it. I try to plant resistant plants and it helps. Last year I was covered with Cucumber Beetles, Squash Bugs, Vine Borers, and Powdery Mildew. I just pulled everything and burned it. If I didn’t have a grocery store I would have starved.

    Do you have a video on watering tomatoes, especially when the tomatoes are starting to get big? I flood mine once a week or more depending on weather, I’d like to use drip tape but it’s hard to know which spacing is best and if it’s getting enough water with only 1 emitter? Thanks

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  ปีที่แล้ว

      Drip irrigation will control the amount of water each plant gets and will push water into the soil slowly and precisely for maximum absorption. Too much water too fast can cause stress to the plants and keep oxygen from getting to their very deep root systems. On the flip side, too little water can result in cracking, low yields, and increased disease and pest issues, blossom end rot, and a host of other problems. A good rule of thumb is regardless of how you water your tomato plants, be sure they’re getting at least 1 1/2 to 2 inches of water per week but checking in on your plants and watering as needed is really the best way to manage irrigation for tomatoes
