What's up TH-cam, I'm Captain Kitty Cat and in today's video, I'll be showcasing the first release of TWW-Style Controls mod for Twilight Princess! The goal of this mod is to make Twilight Princess play similarly to The Wind Waker as much as possible. In this first release I added/updated 3 features. Crouching, L-Targeting, and Cucco as Deku leaf kind of.

Hi everyone, I'm delighted to welcome you here! Since there are so many new people here, I want to bring up how to use the Armor quick-toggle again since I didn't talk about it in the video. The armor quick-toggle allows you to switch between kokiri clothes and the two armors without pausing the game. This is a feature that's already present in my ALBW-Style Meter mod, which I released a few months ago. To toggle from Kokiri/Armor->Zora or Zora->Kokiri, press Dpad-down once. To toggle from Kokiri/Zora->Armor or Armor->Kokiri, press Dpad-down twice. Make sure you unlocked the armors to use the feature.
Question: I played the original GC version (US) of LoZ:TP in which Link was still left-handed, but it was changed for the Wii by flipping everything... was there any place in the game where this mattered?
@warlockpaladin2261 it depends on what you mean by "mattered." For me, I played Wii version before GC and then when I played GC, it was frustrating cuz I was used to wii layout so I would try to go through a dungeon quick with my memories of that dungeon, but then I would run into a wall cuz GC is reverse.
Otherwise, I don't think it impacted the areas if it's your first time playing TP.
Biggest thing I never understood is how Zelda pretty much perfected underwater swimming in MM and TP then never put it into botw or totk. Underwater gameplay is a huge missed opportunity in the new Zeldas
I agree. I enjoyed underwater gameplay in TP, MM, and SS. Would be cool to see it return again
For real
Not only that but deliberately butchering it in MM3D. It's like they don't want underwater gameplay to be fun.
Absolutely. I played a MM romhack recently after only playing OOT for so long and I was so impressed with how zora link swims. It's insane how good it is for a N64-era control scheme
@@Dairunt1restoration project mod
I actually find this fascinating! For those who do not know, Twilght Princess was built off a heavily revamped version of the engine used for The Wind Waker (which explain why some assets from WW are reused or leftover). Who knows how much of WW's data remains in TP, and being able to bring back this feature is just awesome, especially since WW shield guarding was shown in an early tech demo for Twilight Princess
It is admirable to see original mods like this still being made
Thanks, that means a lot!
@@captainkittyca2 hey keep up the good work man
Fascinating stuff! I distinctly remember the earliest trailers of Twilight Princess showing Link shielding while crouching - something that I was surprised not to see in the final game. It'd be really interesting to see that particular pose and function reincorporated into the game.
yea, crouch shielding is still inside the game files actually, at least the animations. There's an animation for idle crouch shielding and, iirc, two animations for shield getting hit. One of the animations is for a big hit on the shield and the other is for a minor hit.
This is the perfect TP mod! For the longest time automatic shielding was a pet peeve of my, it always bothered me how it made the combat simpler than it needed and felt too hand-holdy.
I never thought someone would actually bring manual shielding back thinking it was too niche of an issue, yet here we are, I cannot thank you enough for that!
I cannot wait to see more from this mod. Buena Suerte! (espero que hables español a juzgar por tu nombre de usuario lol)
Thanks! I actually don't speak spanish but I used google translate.
Yea Auto shielding kinda always bothered me after playing the other 3D zelda games. I especially hate auto shielding when link doesn't even have his sword out, like bruh you're holding a lantern on one hand and then a shield on the other automatically? lol
@@captainkittyca2 my bad! I'm glad you feel the same way about auto shielding. Say, is this mod compatible with others, like skins for Link? Also it would be cool to have mod some kind of hard mode mod, it would add to the challenge.
@@Geneolgia After patching your iso, you can open that iso in a tool such as GCFT ("GameCube File Tools") and modify the assets. It should work fine.
If you want to use other code-related mods with this mod, that won't work. Maybe the randomizer will work with this mod since randomizer is a save file and since i didn't touch any of the rel files when making this mod but untested. For the next update, I'll consider updating the damage Link gets from enemies to be the same as the enemies in TWW.
For example, the pirahna plant and bokoblin enemies are in both games in some way. So I could check how much health they take in TWW and adjust the TP one appropriately.
@@captainkittyca2 That sounds great, enemies dealing low damage is the other thing that really annoys me about TP, almost every enemy deals a quarter heart of damage, no matter how scary or big they look, I don't want the game to be Dark Souls but a little damage bump will make combat more engaging.
@@GeneolgiaTBH, I never really felt that TWW was any better. A lot of ways to take damage were only a quarter of a heart.
This is awesome 😎👍 I love different movement mods.
Skilar led me here, this is pretty sweet! I never really thought about if Twilight Princess had any shared elements from Wind Waker because they do look so different on the surface.
That's one of the things that make me love both games so much, the fact that they were made on the same engine and share some animations and gameplay mechanics, yet you could easily miss them if you don't look closely due to stuff like the artstyle.
Most GC games made by Nintendo are built on the _same engine._
A while back I saw a video where Petey Pirahna's boss fight from Super Mario Sunshine was modded into Pikmin 1 with his animations intact.
I love this! Good job!!
2:35 I dig that. I think twilight princess could have been further developed like Totk was
Ah, I haven't played totk yet but I really should. From what i've seen from trailers, it has a lot of skyward sword elements, like sky diving, which I like.
This is really cool!
H .. hi? Wow? Where does one even get the idea to do this! Im genuinely impressed with the attention to detail. I had no idea TP was built off of WW. Wow. Stunning.
Thanks! This actually started out initially as just a mod to remove auto-shielding from TP. But after I implemented it, I realized how similar Link's animations were when compared to toon Link when targeting, such as how Link only gets in his fighting stance when his shield is out or when he targets an enemy. This was basically what started the idea of expanding it to more TWW-like mechanics for me.
You can see my blooper (latest video) for some behind-the-scenes stuff lel.
Randomly got this recommended to me but I love it
this is what was missing control-wise in twilight princess for me. i always hated how they simplified it because of the wii release so this kind of thing makes me so happy
ok now THIS is rad
Thanks! :)
Cool stuff, I recall Skilar/Jack Walker adding the Manual Shield into their TP Mod a few years ago, but it’s cool to see the crouching from the beta return.
I’m having fond memories of when I assumed that TP’s janky animations were just because it was a beta, only for them to remain mostly unchanged in the final game hahaha. It really lost the smoothness of Wind Waker.
Wonder if you’ll be able to find Link’s sprinting animation from when the Armagohma battle was a chase (seen in one of the early trailers). Also, are there any remnants of the magic meter (not the green potion) in the game files? I remember someone got it to load in-game years ago, but they never followed up on it and no one else got it working so I’m unsure how legitimate it was.
My dream Twilight Princess, which we will hopefully achieve as it’s decompiled in the future, is one with more aggressive enemies and combat that requires thought (like the SoH Mod for OoT). It’s a game who’s artstyle really did not fit the difficulty, being even easier than Wind Waker. Then again, they had to make it accessible for the more casual-focused Wii Market.
Thanks! I'm aware that manual shielding is part of TP revamped mod (I was probably one of the first people who played the mod back when it initially released in 2020, I even started a let's play that i didn't complete). th-cam.com/video/_gXnHnWoOdc/w-d-xo.html
That being said, Revamped source code isn't open source, so I couldn't take any code references or anything like that, plus, Jack Walker doesn't seem to be a very active TP modder (seems more of an OoT modder overall but I could be wrong). So because of all of this, I had to literally figure out how to implement it from scratch. Also, revamped adds other features that I didn't necessarily want, such as Link taking extra damage, and I think they modified Rupee Armor mechanics.
Also, I released a mod before this one that utilizes an energy meter, similar to "A Link Between Worlds", a 3DS Zelda game. th-cam.com/video/-gHzMo7Yt2I/w-d-xo.html
Awesome!!!
Thank you :)
oh that's pretty cool
Thanks! Planning on adding crouch shielding and crawling when i get around to working on next update
wow you made the ww lighting soft!
Looks great
@@kstreet7438 thanks
For TWW lighting, i think i modified graphic settings in dolphin. But it's been so long since i made those changes so i don't remember exactly what i changed to cause that
As part is they were making wind waker 2 before tp so this probably is in the games code somewhere in a data leak.
Ey, me encanta ver mecánicas de WW en otros juegos :D
¡Me alegro de que te guste! (Google Translate)

Ayy, Long time no see! How've you been buddy?
As long as you don't take away swinging while running.
ah lel. Yea swinging while running is still there. Would require a lot of dedication to even find the specific code to alter in order to remove that tbh
@@captainkittyca2 Yeeeees. This seems really cool. I will watch your career with great interest
@@pretzel1313 Thanks! Currently I'm working on an update for TP Wii support and multiple regions
O, Great Captain Kitty Cat.
can you mod his run back into playability? 🙏
The beta run animation? th-cam.com/video/tP12ZDC9Blc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3bA9LWLllDLWE_IU&t=29
Not sure but that would be interesting to try out
@@captainkittyca2 th-cam.com/video/SKw9I9nijG8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DU3Dnqh3TW0aeRUU @1:20. i figured since the animation is there.
@@fiercedeity6437 Ah, the Skyward Sword-ish run animation lel.
If I ever make some kind of stamina mod for the game, I might use it. But if you simply want to replace regular run animation with the run animation in that cutscene, you should be able to just copy/paste the bck file (bck is animation format for GC games) and rename it to the same name as regular run animation and overwrite the regular run animation.
Link bck files are located in files->res->Object->AlAnm.arc in game iso. Use GCFT ("GameCube File Tools") to import the iso and to open the arc file by right-clicking and then you can extract the bck files and view them in J3dModelViewer github.com/LordNed/J3D-Model-Viewer Although first, you'll need to extract Link's body bmd model which is located in files->res->Object->Kmdl.arc->bmwr.
After opening the bmd model in the model viewer, you can test the bck files in AlAnm.arc until you find the one used in the cutscene. Then, using GCFT and opening AlAnm.arc, right-click on the regular/gameplay run bck file and choose "Replace file" and replace it with the bck file that is used in the cutscene. Make sure to save the arc file after replacing by right-clicking it and selecting "Replace RARC", then export the iso.
@@captainkittyca2 amazing knowledge, ill will try this thank you
Tp was made with the WW engine
Yep, which is why they have a lot of similarities. Also, when taking closer look at some of Link's hidden skills, you can notice they re-use the animations from TWW. The one where Link jumps and hits the enemy from above and the one where he rolls to behind the enemy, then attacks are both from TWW's parry attacks.
Also the Crouch animation is re-used from TWW. But in the regular game, it's only used in some moments, such as before enetering a tunnel it is used for like one frame (ordon spring) and in forest temple, when jumping from all monkeys to reach miniboss, they use some of the animation when he lands
@@captainkittyca2
I really like that you made it so link can use his shield and it’s not automatic.
I wish these unused animations were kept.
Fuck it, im gonna play wind waker now
Can you shield attack while shielding or is it gone?
You can. You have to L-target, then Hold R button, then press B to shield attack iirc (after you learn shield attack skill)
Been a while but i think that's how i had that done
zelda tp: Skyworld sword controls 🗿
Hey i know u from soh server :D
ah did you see my soh ALBW-Style Meter mod remake? lel
or from the custom audio samples tutorial forumn?
@@captainkittyca2 both lol
@@hazemimam6826 nice! btw, the idea for the ALBW-Style Meter mod for soh actually came from ALBW-Style Meter for TP that i made a few months ago th-cam.com/video/-gHzMo7Yt2I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6eh1_-ciZggYJSmD
Finally
Good Twilight Princess
also you sound like a mix of Portuguese and French (good thing)
can you make Link crawl everywhere like in TWW ??
That's the plan for the next update when i get around to it.
Also, look forward to my upcoming video, because you may see a hint of it :) (wont be a release video btw)
Does this work with the HD version of TP?
Unfortunately not. But once RPX editing becomes more known and especially after a TP HD decompilation project happens, i'll aim to port it
@@captainkittyca2 cool, can’t wait to see what you do next!
the crouch animation being directly taken from ww makes it look very goofy and out of place in tp
Kinda yea. Btw, the crouch animation is already inside the game files, just was barely used in the regular game. In forest temple, Link crouches when reaching the miniboss after jumping from all monkeys and he uses that animation briefly and only like one of its frames maybe. I think he also briefly uses the animation right before entering a tunnel like in the beginning of the game in ordon spring. But it's so brief that hard to really notice.
If you look at some early footage of TP, you can see the regular sword attacks have similar/same animation as TWW too th-cam.com/video/3sjqhwG2m7s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=04hhn-w8ocw56MEP&t=2715
@@captainkittyca2 yeah, you said most of this in the video too! it's honestly really cool that any of this is there at all.
still looks goofy
I think it looks fine, it just needs to be slow down a bit.
This works on PAL version?
I don't think can apply the patch on a PAL rom. That being said, you can check out the source code that i linked in the description of the video and try to compile the code with PAL iso. I'm not sure if PAL iso is supported yet for TP Decompilation project, but can ask them in the zelda decompilation discord server. Hopefully it is.
Works on PAL now! I released version 0.2 with crouch-shielding. (latest video)
Is this compatible with the WIIU HD version?
No. The Wii U version hasn't been decompiled/in the process of decompilation yet so can't modify the source code
You can put chickens into your pocket in twilight princess? How?
It's apart of the mod, the chickens being the deku leaf stand in
Basically what the above comment said yea
I modified normal bombs so that Link takes out cuccos when in mid-air but still takes out bombs when he is in the ground
So collect normal bombs to collect cuccos
So, link now has a chicken in the pocket? lol
Lol. Link manages to store a heavy metal ball in his pocket with ease so the chicken probably feels like nothing in comparison tbh.
Hell yeah now i can teabag with ease😂
add running
like Skyward Sword running? Might try to do that if i decide to get into a Skyward Sword-Style stamina mod
@@captainkittyca2 when replaying the game, i noticed link has a running animation similar to skyword sword's one, in the beginning of the game when Ilia and the kids get kidnapped
Okay?
What's up?
@@captainkittyca2 sorry I didn't understand what was going on or the purpose
@@buster5661 In Twilight Princess, Link can't do several things that Wind Waker Link can do.
For example, you can't crouch, or even shield crouch in Twilight Princess. This mod adds the former.
In Twilight Princess, Link takes his shield out as soon as you L-target (or "Z-Target") but in other 3D Zelda games, he doesn't take his shield out when targeting, only when holding the R button after targeting.
And then the cucco item is a modification of normal bombs. If you are in the air and take out a bomb, Link will take out a cucco. Otherwise, if you are in the ground, he will still take out a bomb.
Hope that helps!
Oh wow ok thanks. I hope your project is successful and brings you great satisfaction@@captainkittyca2
@@buster5661 Thanks!
Could you create an optional xdelta patch that's compatible with an already widescreen patched iso? Refering to this patch th-cam.com/video/8FwSHLlexl4/w-d-xo.html
does that widescreen mod modify the main.dol? If not, then what you might be able to do, although untested, is patch your iso with my mod, and patch another iso with the widescreen mod. Then, using GCFT, extract whatever file the widescreen mod modifies from the widescreen iso and import it into the TWW-Style Controls iso.
However, if it modifies the main.dol file then there's nothing much i could do. Since I'd need the source code of the widescreen mod to implement it into my mod's main.dol
@@captainkittyca2 Ok, I'll try that method. Had a hunch that it might require manually importing files from one iso into another.
@@Darkotaku85 Test the widescreen patch with latest version of the mod (v0.2) th-cam.com/video/7o5hNEg2iL0/w-d-xo.html

No duh!
They were both made very closely.
Twilight Princess was made because a lot of people back then hated the cartoonly style of Wind Waker.
Both are my favorite games.
Especially with Link transforming into a Wolf and Wolves are my favorite Beasts.
🐺🤍🩶🖤
I like both Twilight Princess GC/HD and TWW HD. I think GC TP and HD TWW are my favorite Zelda games, but Ocarina of Time 3D and MM 3D are also close there. Interestingly tho, i'm not really a fan of the wolf parts of the game, at least the parts before the third dungeon.
