  • China's New Sodium Battery Has Elon Musk Crapping in His Pants
With electric vehicles gaining popularity by the day, the demand for crucial battery ingredients like cobalt has skyrocketed. This surge has sparked a quest among car and battery makers to find alternatives to the current top dogs: nickel-cobalt-aluminum, nickel-cobalt-manganese, and lithium-iron phosphate batteries. We're on the hunt for something better, cheaper, lighter, and more efficient.
In today's video we look at China's New Sodium Battery Has Elon Musk Crapping in His Pants

Those who watched Tesla battery day presentation 2 years ago will know that Tesla is developing sodium battery tech of their own, but due to the fact that sodium batteries will not reach the density of around 300kw/kg that 4680 cells can reach, sodium cells will only appear in budget vehicles, much like how Tesla is buying LiFePo4 batteries from BYD. It’s highly unlikely that Tesla or Elon is somehow scared because someone else got there sooner.

That is just silly. If the Na battery proves to be a winner, Elon will simply adopt it (and probably improve it). The real place for the Na battery is in powering grid storage and home batteries. This will free up a huge amount of Li. For instance, the Li in the Hornsdale 180mWh battery would be enough for 3000 60kWh EVs.

The problem is I totally get Na for home and grid - but for EVs they still have a while to go. There are a few key technology that with boost both Na and Li coming such as using sulfur instead of active carbon that will helps with cost, weight, and allows more power storage. Yet, they need to hit around the 300 mark of LPF can hit other wise, it will be hard for them to start replacing Li as the only type of battery. If anything, what I predict is a hybrid Li and Na battery for the EV market. This way they can reduce the cost, but have a battery that is design around both benfits they bring to the table. Once Na can hit around that 300 mark - that will be when they will replace the hybrid battery.

Hi g.g.g.. The earth's axis has not been shifted by the pumping of groundwater, this is alarmist misinformation. Neither will removing sodium have any effect. As a logical comparison, consider that twice a day the tides shift trillions of tons of water about with no affect on the axis. Every spring icebergs the size of small continents break off from Antarctica's ice-sheet and float away from the axis of rotation into the southern ocean. Despite the principle of "conservation of angular momentum", no effects on the earth's rotation are discernable.
Sorry g.g.g., you have been deceived by the well used publicity principle whereby news sources dramatize the story by using an exciting (but grossly exaggerated) headline. Click-bait in other words. Read the headline on this video about Elon Musk being in a state of defecatory incontinence due to the sodium battery, and you have the perfect example of this. There are far better batteries coming in the next few years this is a non-starter.

So in summary the new batteries the new battery technology is less likely to catch fire than the ones all EV owners are riding about on now. They do not have the big battery chemistry issues with running in the cold that makes using EVs so problematic in cold climates like Sweden or Canada. And they are promised to be much much cheaper as the raw materials are abundant.
And now the downside. Energy density not as good as the current Lithium batteries, which has awful energy density compared to hydrocarbons!
So you have even more "range anxiety" or even more of the weight of the EV taken up by batteries.
And all this effort made on the assumption that the CO2 from hydrocarbon fuels is in someway affecting the climate. Which is simply not true, a massive hoax.
Until batteries have an energy to weight/volume ratio that equals petrol/diesel AND charging can be done as fast as filling with liquid fuel EVs will only be for the limited use case of people who only stray from home within their charge range. i.e. never go on holidays etc.

Sodium is much more reactive. It catches fire more readily. It is heavier. But is it significantly cheaper.

Those fires are in old EV's with 1st/2nd gen batteries using non LFP chemistries & poor BMS algorithms. More than 50% of EV's now use LFP chemistry & all have improved BMS's. Of course, Petrol (fumes) never burns, eh? That's why we're 5:01 all driving Internal Non-combustible Engine vehicles, eh?
