    LFP isn’t inferior. It’s just different. It can get charged fully each day and will degrade slower.

      @@sargfowler9603 LFP is safer, but no, you can't charge it without degradation, and ask Tesla Model 3 RWD drivers from Northern Europe how that LFP tolerates cold. "Tolerate" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Many of us keep our cars outside in the cold when it's -25. You drive that LFP straight to a supercharger and it won't charge at all. Not hard to find videos for that either.

      ​@lp3860 fairer to say it will spend some time dumping power into the motor windings to make heat then push that into the battery so it can start charging, no? At subsequent stops the battery will be warm from driving so should have no delay.

      True, degrades at a rate that's about half the rate of ternary Li-ion batteries (should last twice as long). Unlike ternary Li-ion batteries it can be charged to a true 100% each time with very little degradation. This is especially good for those owners who tend to be a bit lazy and allow their EV to sit at a true 100% for long periods (even doing this routinely over weekends will accumulate damage for ternary Li-ion batteries). However, just like ternary Li-ion batteries they don't like to be charged (especially DC Fast charged), below freezing and can be easily damaged by doing so. But all this is for older LFP chemistry, not the new LMFP that's being employed by Ford and Tesla. The older LFP was lucky to achieve an energy density of 190 Wh/kg while LMFP achieves 240 Wh/Kg. The difference being the addition of Manganese. I'm not sure how this affects operational temperature ranges. I'd like to know if Volvo plans to use LMFP vs LFP.

    The top version of an EX30 is cheaper than the cheapest Model Y but faster than the performance Model Y. People moaning about the price but it is great value for money considering.

      Because it's new. A new, affordable car is one that is within range of the average (or below average) new car buyer, *NOT* the average car buyer. The average car buyer is buying a used car.

      If you’re looking for a cheap EV, try the used market. There’s quite a few bargains available now.

      Used Ev's are the way to go for those who are spending their own money. Some nice deals out there. I just bought a 1 year old Kona Electric with only 2,300 miles for 40% less than its price when new. I wonder what the price of this EX30 will be at 1-2 years old? Either way I wouldn't buy it due to the lack of a driver display / HUD. At least it has a rear wiper.

      But now you can get a 24mth old Ioniq for half this price with no mileage on it. 38kwh and I got 238miles range yesterday on a single charge. 6.1 miles per kwh.

      They've been designing good looking cars for about 20 years consistently now...
      The only relatively ugly car they've made in recent years was the 1st gen XC90... the rest were quite beautiful.

    I appreciate the sensible remarks about range with which you finished the video, and I wonder: how many of the people, d'ya suppose, who fill social media with comments saying I can't buy ANY of those EVs because I've got a 500-mile daily commute, and there is no electricity of any kind where I go daily, out into the tundra to feed the noble moose, and similar nonsense, are lying?
    Remember the American muscle cars back in the late 60s and early 70s that got well under 100 miles per tank if you drove them fast, and there was no reason to have one if you weren't going to go fast? Remember about all the complaints about their range? Neither do I, because there were no such complaints, because "range anxiety" is sheer horse****! All those muscle cars got back and forth from LA to Vegas all the time, no problems.
    Present-day Bugatti get even worse mileage than those muscle cars did, and they need NEW TIRES about as often as a long-range EV needs a charge. It's madness. Smaller batteries, lighter weight... sigh, that would be nice.
    We now return you to your regularly-scheduled insane world.

    Really like the look and idea of this car. The only downside for me is the lack of gauge cluster or display for the speedo in front of the steering wheel. I actually really like those recycled materials around the dash though, much prefer that to the fingerprint-prone black stuff used in many other budget friendly vehicles.

      I assumed they'd have a HUD to cover that but it seems not.
      I have a Toyota Prius with a central display, it has HUD as well but it's not always used, and I don't have a problem with it. I used to have the first generation Citroen Picassos which had a central display and one of the reasons Citroen gave for it was that you don't need to move your eyes as much to see the central display. I didn't think that was right and I wasn't able to measure it but it did feel as if it was correct. It does give more scope on steering wheel design as it won't get in the way of the display.
      Of more concern is that you seem to need to use the display to alter things like heating and aircon which will involve looking away from the road and focusing on the display.

      Exactly this, all its missing is a gauge cluster or a heads up display to be perfect. I would hate to take my eyes off the road to see how fast I am going and I don't know why this has become a trend.

    Mmmm not sure it beats the MG4 at the entry level MG4 £27K EX30 £33.7K
    MG4 also uses LFP for the entry level version, has more boot space, more rear leg room and has a display in front of the driver (yes I am old fashioned and like to see the speed I am travelling at without looking down and towards the centre console)
    It's a nice enough looking car, and I am sure the google interface on the display will be much better than a lot of the chinese brands. The interior is good, though those doors look a little spartan, would need to see how comfortable my elbow would be after a long journey.
    I think I would rather keep the £6.5K and get the MG, but I'm sure others will value the brand and SUV styling enough to pay the extra.

      I'm not so sure. MG is now growing so fast that they are looking to build a factory in Europe to meet demand,. I think MG might have broken through the brand snobbery barrier. An if it has done that then Western brand are deep deep poopoo especially in the low to mid end market.

    £31K is getting there. Personally, I'd probably go for a Volvo over an MG at this price point.

      I think 25k is the magic number. Finance option are available to most people at that rate. I do think the volvo looks good though especially compared to corsa I have seen at the same money with smaller batteries

    I will still never be on board with not having a gauge cluster or a HUD in front of me and no buttons for basic things like AC, volume, parking lights etc... This is a stupid trend that needs to end.

      Will all be irrelevant when level 4 autonomy is 'solved'. The best part is no part, less parts & complexity will allow these vehicles to be churned out much faster and will remain infinitely updateable via software. Can't remember the last time anyone ever pined for an old physical button phone 📱

    Still too pricey for most of us, as entry level goes - but good to be fair. Still looking for an small car, perhaps even smaller, £20k and lower. Thinking UP, MII, Citigo, C1, 108, Aygo, etc.

      Volvo largely occupy the same part of the market as BMW, Merc, Audi etc. You're not getting a Peugeot 108 equivalent from them.

      @@JackScarlett1 Thank you Jack, I have just brought an ICE Fiat 500 for my daughter to learn to drive and hopefully use, plus for me to drive to the station. I just needed an econobox for £100 pm, loads of plastic and basic*. I really wanted an EV but that’s my budget. I hope you are wrong and I remain optimistic that it will come. I will keep watching your commentary, jumping on the videos with small and affordable. Don’t stop pushing for the small, economic end of the market please!! (* live in a rural village so Ami and the Fiat Topolino not suitable) A

      That's Why I dislike the Tesla Model 3 and Y EV's putting aside they are very pricey even compared to this EV,
      They don't have a Driver Binnacle speed display, Which all cars by law had to have since the start of the car making history!
      The one thing if you look it up that all cars had to have was a drivers speed display in front of him/her on the dash well lit up and clear.
      No matter the brand or the changes to the cabin designs or other features each year the one thing had to be there was the speed display up in your front road view so you could safely glance down for 2 seconds to see the speed and eyes back up where you had to watch the road!
      Even the Tesla Model S & X has that display. But then Elon broke the rule and somehow gt away with not having the drivers speed display there in you front view on the dash?
      How these 2 EV's the 3 & Y can get away with breaking the safety rule all the rest could not really amazes me?

      Especially since its sister car the Zeekr X has a nice HUD ... and a gauge cluster ... and a bigger center screen ... and it even slides to turn into a passenger screen. The EX30 exterior plus the X interior would be the perfect subcompact luxury hatch.

    We bought one of these in 2020. Boxy, interesting looks, 4.2m long, two battery choices, smallish boot, good range. It’s called a Kia Soul EV and looks like an almost suspiciously close cousin. Very pleased with it.

      ​@@drfisheyeYes, but it's those "112" people who are behind the engineering, design, and development. And just because volvo is a part of geele, doesn't mean geely is a big part of volvo. Did you call volvo and Ford by the same name when Ford owned volvo? My Volvo C30 was designed, engineered and tested in Sweden, but it was still built in Belgium.

    I still object to the use of the word 'cheap' for a car that costs in excess of £30K new. But we're getting there. One of these days, we'll get to the point where an electric car is in my price range (and I think in the price range of most people I know), which is more like £20K new, perhaps £15K used after three years or so.

      BYD are selling a small hatch in the UK for £26k and MG4 have something similar with more range for £27k. Sounds expensive but the average new car price in the UK is a whopping £39k

    Lack of instrument cluster is a concern.
    Driver looking at Central console for real time drive information like speed is concerning.

      A 3rd party company like Bosch needs to make an effective affordable plugin HUD for manufacturers to offer or as a plugin upgrade for any car. The EV6 and Ariya have HUDs and they are great.

    Own 2 Volvo C30s, have owned XC70, XC90 in the past, drove a C40 today and was super impressed by drivetrain + design, but surprised by its size relative to our C30s which feel almost go-kart like. The EX30 is the pick of the new product lines for me, keeping a small size and offering lots of practical touches with engineering that seeks simplification. Will very likely be adding it to our business for the short to medium range trips. Nice points regarding product positioning relative to Polestar.

      @@AlanTov If you can just tell the car not to speed and the speed-limit mapping is kept uptodate (even OSM is not bad these days for that) then maybe one doesn't actually need to keep staring at the speedo? I'd love it if my car could just keep track of the speed limit instead of me having to spend a significant amount of attention on it. Then we could all spend more time actually looking at the front at what is going on.

      @@clives4501 Some people enjoy the rough edges that new technology has. It's not like electric cars have no benefits either.
      Electricity is everywhere so you can charge anywhere there's a public socket rather than having to go out of your way to drive to a petrol station. Regenerative braking also makes city driving much better.
      Not to mention in a car with this much acceleration, the instant torque from electric motors is addictive

    As you said - there could have been more interior space within the same footprint, if only that long-for-no-reason bonnet was shorter and the cabin space extended a bit forward. I bet my old Renault Modus is more roomy, even with it's petrol-engine... The interior design itself though, I prefer much more than in those in the out-going ICE-Volvos.

    Let me get this straight an LFP battery can be charged from 0-100% & discharged again time and again. It also can be super charged without much battery degradation. The bigger rage lithium nickel manganese batteries can only be charged to 80% and discharged to 20% before battery degradation and each supercharger use damages them. So how are they the good stuff? Oh and don’t mention battery fires, I’ve not heard of any reports of fires involving LFP batteries and one final point, the latest CATL M3P LFP battery has nearly the same energy density as the other type of batteries anyway 🤷🏼‍♂️

      @@themomentalist I only said that Jack dismissed LFP and claimed NMC was superior... which it is, in one single metric (energy density - which Jack also said).
      The rest of the information is fairly widespread... apparently not 'common knowledge', but LFP chemistry has been around so long that patents have just expired.
      BTW - LFP is also the chemistry used by the BYD 'Blade' battery - the one they test by hammering nails into etc. The 'blade' is more about packaging - it's the LFP chemistry that makes it safe and non-reactive to punctures, etc.

    It's so close to perfect it's like they're messing it up on purpose. Tiny bit longer so the back seat isn't cramped. Add the buttons back in and give the driver a display. Then we're golden.

    Very clever packaging, but it's not the C30 we want. We love all of the practical storage and quality of life designs, but we just want small cars that aren't necessarily children and parent motivated. They *can* get bigger cars, singles shouldn't *have" to get all of the family stuff tacked on.
    There aren't ISOFIX points and snack trays on 911s and GT86s, families aren't trying to shove their kids into small cars. It's nice that the EX30 can accommodate, but markets just want small cars for small needs.

    Thanks Jack - very interested in hearing how this drives. My current car is the ID.3, and it's a little concerning as to my future with VW when they appear to have had a fright with their EV designs and are doing everything to go in the opposite direction and upwards in price. I liked the mini TED Talk ;) I like the design of the EX30 inside and out, even if it does have the first order stormtrooper look :)

    I agree Jack, smaller LFP battery is the way forward for mass adoption. Average commute round trip in Australia is 34km, on sealed roads at an average speed of 31 km/h. I’d guess 90% of the average urban vehicles life is used for commuting - why haul around the unnecessary weight of a battery dimensioned for less than 5% of trips ?.

      Still, 0.16kWh/km is still pretty lardy arse terrible, especially because it isn't stated as WLTP. Tesla does better and isn't brick shaped.

      In Australia, a model 3 RWD is AUD $61.1k, the EX30 49kWh is not available and the MG4 at 6.9km/kWh is AUD $41.6k.
      EX30 49kWh looks to be about AUD $51.5k based on UK pricing.
      Might be worth waiting for the Tesla model 2 .

      @@4203105 maybe, however I haven’t seen an major BEV manufacturers offering sodium ion only packs. Sodium ion cell cycle life has been much lower than for lithium - if it can be improved to be comparable with lithium then it certainly will have a cost advantage.

    I had to look up if they were planning to sell this thing in the US, and was very pleasantly surprised to find that the answer seems to be yes. Kudos to Volvo for doing that! Every other manufacturer seems to run screaming away from the notion that Americans might buy any car that could reasonably described as "small".

      The problem is weight. You can have a powerful motor and have the same range if you use the same power from your acceleration pedal. The motor is not that heavy and there is no point on making it less powerful.

    I would not call this "affordable" at that price point. I'm interested to see the starting price for the Tesla Model 2, figures I've seen so far are $25,000 which is definitely more affordable. But if it comes in at a lower price point to this, it will get all the sales.

    The mini China rant is bang on. Our government's lack of climate action across the board is literally in our faces right now. Hottest temps on record, countries literally burning, and China completely dominating the car markets because they got ahead of EV development.

    Nice to see affordable, practical EVs from the legacy manufacturers - hopefully the EX30 is the first of at-least-several. Personally, I'd still like a tiny two-seat EV that can do motorway speeds and that has a range of 150+ miles as a second car, but I recognise that mine's a niche case. This is a step in a good direction :)

    This is exactly why self regenerating plug in hybrids (with under 40k lecky range) are best.
    For the daily drive youd barely ever need petrol, 100% efficient in traffic jams. Still do long journeys.
    If i had the money, id develop a electic hub with regen access, that bolts on to a cars front or back wheels, (whatever is not attached to the ICE) and connects to a battery with apprix 25kms range.
    Affordable, easy and eliminates the biggest pollution issue, idling and low speed scenarios.

      It's al lot of money, but great value. I'm always chocked to find out how much people spend on new cars (I never bought a new car). The average in the Netherlands is more than € 42k, so this Volvo is suddenly relatively cheap.

    Skipping watching this - the title says bargain, the comments say starting from £33k & that you mention "affordable". It's only affordable if you have the means to pay for it. A Koenigsegg is affordable if you have a few million spare. Sadly not many do, and neither do many have £33k lying around collecting dust when there are cheaper alternative means of transport if you just need transport.

    If they haven't moved the speedo from the gauge cluster to somewhere very visible, then I think a lot of Volvo drivers will start getting speeding tickets. It rather important to not go over the speed limit, both for safety but also for your own finances.

      I understand where you are coming from as that was one of my thoughts when I bought a Tesla nearly four years ago. I also agree with your comment re safety and finances however now very rarely look at the speedo. I go with the flow of traffic or if in front and I exceed the speed limit I get an instant audible warning, repeatedly and very annoying, until I slow down. With one pedal driving slowing down is very quick.
      Living with an EV is a different mindset to an ICE. Not only with regards to the charging but the whole driving experience.
      I like this Volvo EX30, we need more smaller cars from manufacturers.

    Current early personal lease ‘deals’ on these are £450 on a 47+9. Not as competitive as I had hoped. And given that Volvo’s subscription service is over £1k for an electric XC40, you’d have to be on glue to go for an EX30 on their subscription.

    I'd love to see car manufacturers make EV's with CATL gen 2 Sodium Ion batteries.
    Not quite as good energy density as Lithium, but everything they're made from is in the top 10 most abundant materials on earth, which makes them significantly cheaper.
    Lithium is $5,000/ton, Sodium is $80/ton, for example.
    Ora already puts a Sodium Ion battery in the base model Ora Black Cat I believe (don't shoot me if thats wrong, its just something I read somewhere). The higher spec car has LFP.

      Well those don't exist yet. They are still on the first generation and those aren't cheaper than LFP yet. Should get there in the second generation and I'm sure at that point CATL won't be able to make them fast enough and every manufacturer will want them in their standard range car.
      It won't just be cheaper. Apart from the energy density, sodium-ion batteries have better properties than lithium-ion, all around.

      Pretty sure it's closest rival is the MG4, which starts at 26k GBP... same size, pretty much the same range (both short and long-range versions), 7k cheaper than the Volvo.

    I love so many things about this design. It is high time we take sustainability and climate change seriously in every major consumer decision. The one deal killer for me is the lack of a central speed display. Safety-critical information needs to be in the central field of vision of the driver.

    Liked your mini china rant "TED talk". One might add, it's not just the Europeans and Americans' lack of foresight. the Japanese have been even worse in preparing for the EV transition.

      Exactly what I was thinking. Definitely not a car to take five adults for anything more than a two minute spin.
      My V70 is only just over a foot longer overall, and I can easily push the driver's seat fully back, without causing crush injuries to anyone sat behind me.
      It will also take 10 foot pipes with the boot closed.
      This thing seems to be like an inverse Tardis. Big on the outside, tiny inside.
      Where did they hide all that space? 🤔

    Love this car but the backseat is just too damn small. Somehow the ID2 version backseat looks bigger, so interesting to see how that will turn out. But Volvo in general has had pretty small backseat areas in all of their EV's thus far. XC40 isn't exactly roomy either.

    Over all design is amazing but the back seat space is so cramped. A deal breaker for me.

    I would wish that car makers would remove the middle seat, the result would be a more narrow car wich would improve the areodynamics wich in turn would increase the range while simultaneously make it cheaper.

      @@USNEM You can't use your phone whilst driving, as it's not safe. So using a tablet to change things like the temperature etc is just as dangerous, as you have to take your eyes off the road, due to not being able to do it by feel alone... Which you can easily do with physical controls.
      Not to mention the fact that you have more steps to be able to do simple things as well as you have to tap/swipe etc to find things first too. All around it just makes things less efficient and safe.

    In 1988, I bought a new Ford Escort for £6,200. That's £16,400 in today's money. And I got 150,000 miles out of it. New cars are unaffordable.

      Yes, the cheapest Ford Fiesta is now £19,350. Of course you get more for your money but I doubt you will get more than 150,000 miles out of it. And this is a model that is about to be discontinued.
      I suspect the fact that most cars are financed has contributed to this. People don't look at the capital cost, just the monthly payments.
      Personally I bought an e-bike instead, I hope to never buy another car.

      And it should as a 2024 or 2025 model year ev. The Chinese are behind in average ev charging time, perf and top speeds.
      Only the Koreans can challenge tesla there. Weird to as China has 480-600kw fast chargers already in service.
      Plus evs that can dual charge through 2 ports simultaneously. Maybe in another few year's?

      @@kosiranze Max 20 minutes. When traveling long distances, we need to charge about an hour with our 50 kW Bolt.

      @@sebastian.tristan then 150kw is enough in 20 minutes you can theoretically deliver 50kwh, which is 80 percent of the long range verison battery capacity. For passenger cars, there really is no pont in having greater than 350kw chargers. Even if you take the biggest batteries on passenger cars today (excluding us pick up trucks) a 350kw charger can deliver a theoretical 117kwh in 20 minutes.
      A car that can sustain 150kw for 20 minutes so 50kwh, will gain about 200km or 120mi of range in that time (250wh/km, 400wh/mi). This i think is acceptable for a lot of people.
      Same practice for 350kw in 20 min is 117kwh. That is 470km or 290mi.
      150kw comes out to about 10min of charging for every hour of travelling. And 350 comes down to only 4 min per hour of traveling. Going to let's say 700kw would therfore mean 2 minute charging for every hour of traveling, and i think that you see that you get diminishing returns.
      Also had a renault zoe for a few years which also charges at 40kw average only stops either to short for a proper meal, or too long for a stretch and a bathroom break. Having an e208 now which does 100kw( 80kw average) gets stops down to 25 minutes, and 25 minutes when not traveling alone pass by usually about in time when a group/family gets ready to go back on a road.

    'A little bit of cabin space' Let's admit that the back seats are not for adults! 😀I'll keep my diesel XC60 for longer trips and thinking about EX30 as a second city car and short distance trips. I like the car, it's just the price I have to digest it for a while before I jump to an acquisition.

    Totally agree with having a smaller / 2nd car for school runs, pop to shops etc. We have a Model Y, and would like a 2nd more affordable run around EV. If the price bracket stays close to this, this maybe a good choice, but when the Dolphine comes, this maybe a challenger on price.

    Positives:
    -Recycled materials. They look cool and nice to the touch and shows-off the new age of thinking (we can use it again and again and again...), just seems clever to me.
    -The TED talk. It embarrases politicians and 'Legacy' car brands. Good.
    Negatives:
    -No buttons. I have a 2010 car with radio integrated into the gps tpuchscreen, just the radio and nothing else. It still bugs me. I still want buttons.
    -The speedometer should still be infront of the driver. I have poor eyesight, don't make me have to look around, please.

      100% agree. That was my gripes about this car.
      I was super stoked about the price, but was immediately turned off by the lack of buttons. Speedo not in front of the driver is also a really stupid trend that needs to die with evs. It's just dangerous not having it right in front of you and buried in a screen that may or may not fail. I'm deciding between this car and the Honda prologue, and I think this video actually sold me on the upcoming Honda.

    Jack, while driving a Volvo C40, I noticed the same problem that you and other reviewers have mentioned. My right leg (your left leg) rubs the console and is very uncomfortable. I went to a Junk Yard (a breaker yard) and purchased a used console. I showed it to an automobile upholstery worker and he can reshape the problem area and make it look factory. When it's done I'll post it to the internet and maybe Geely or Volvo will see it and fix the problem at the factory from now on. By the way Sir, another great video from you and your team.

    Physical buttons for media + climate panel on the center dash, physical individual buttons/knobs ont the steering wheel, normal speakers/Sound system (as up until this point in every Volvo) as I only see that extra place as "gimmik" in the doors, and this could have been a mega hit for me. Lovely exterior design, good size and price (in the category).
    Also a bit less performance for less money, in the traffic you cant get 5s accelerations from 0-100 all the time.
