Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. Frontiers is a tech demo that's more fun than plenty of finished products. I don't care if the artstyle is mid and the story is 90% dialogs. The gameplay is too fun for me to mind all of that. I have over 260 hours on it in total.
surprisingly the story is actually really really good despite it being 90 percent dialogue.
like, this is probably some of the best the main cast has been in years.
i know we like to rag on sonics other attempts at telling a mature story, but frontiers actually is the first time in a sonic game that a mature story really, REALLY worked.
and that's a merit all it's own.

I always appreciate TH-camrs who aren't afraid to express how they really feel and not just defect to the popular opinion just because it's the ""right"" opinion. I have my issues with Sonic Superstars, and I don't think I enjoy it as much as Mania, but I still really enjoy it and appreciate it for what it is. It's interesting hearing someone offering their prospective on why they prefer Superstars to Mania.
Same here, but its not a bad game, its far from bad actually I know even worse games inside or outside of the Sonic franchise. I still have a few problems with the games but the good outweighs the bad here and I still had fun with Superstars, I still might prefer Mania over it tho
We need another *"Murder of Sonic"* type game every so often. A sonic Visual novel game actually works really well, not gonna lie.

sonic frontiers really became something special with the spindash update. and it's absolutely a fun time just RUNNING AROUND.
i can find myself vibing in the open world.
Sonic Rush Adventure is my all time favorite Sonic game, so seeing anyone besides myself list it as one of the best games in the series is just amazing. W for Rush Adventure!

Heroes doesn't get enough appreciation for what it is. Never see it on anyone's Best Of lists. It's not the greatest by any margin, but for the time it came out, it felt like a huge game. I suppose it's worth noting that I played the Gamecube version, which was by far the least buggy. Way more people had PS2s and XBoxes though, and I think that marred a lot of it's reputation from the get go.

Sonic Hero’s will always hold a special place in my heart as it’s the last Sonic game I played to story completion. I’ve picked up a couple of sonic games since but never had the time or commitment to finish them.
I like your list! I wouldn’t have expected Unleashed to be so high, but I kind of agree! I haven’t played all the way through it yet but it is really fun. I love the Werehog stages I just kind of wish they were a little bit shorter. Not too much just by a couple minutes. My favorite Sonic games are SA2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Sonic's one of those endearing series I don't care to play, but I'm glad it exists.
That's me with the simpsons, I don't watch the new stuff unless I hear really good things about an episode, but I don't want the show to end, even if I just rewatch the fist 9 seasons most of the time anyways
Imagine: Sonic Unleashed style story, world-building, and polish with Sonic Frontiers gameplay and characterization. Now THAT is a modern Sonic game for the ages! (Also some Adventure style gameplay elements and the Chao Gardens for good measure.)

@@alanarand8511 How about this then? Something to satisfy both Adventure fans and boost fans: Make the boost a reward for utilizing momentum and the level to your advantage. Make it that you have to reach a certain level of speed before the boost becomes available for use, and even then, it's pretty limited to how long you can use it and pertaining to what momentum you gain during and before it. Maybe even have the shoes power up play a role as well.

I always find it interesting how many people didn't like *Sonic CD* at first. I always thought it was fantastic day one. *New Stages, awesome music, a sense of exploration, different outcomes/endings, multiple stage changes, and that amazing intro and outro.* It was always good, just glad people are seeing it now.
Sonic adventure 2 is my favorite game of all time .. raising your Chao to either be good or evil based on how you treat it is legendary
42:07 Is it just me, or are there others of you thinking that this year (or years) is a good opportunity for a game dedicated to Tails? It could even be similar to Tails Adventure in some aspects (like using several gadgets, that's Tails' thing), but imagine adding more to that, such as upgrading them, opening up new paths, even featuring RPG elements. I think 3D Metroidvania could be a good fit for a Tails game (kinda like Kena: Bridge of Spirits was in that aspect). I get a feeling that if they do this, there can be no middle ground. Either somehow, an unexpectedly amazing game will come out of this, giving Tails total justice, or a complete flop, if they are not truly inspired at Sonic Team. If they really want to give him justice though, the best would be to completely isolate Tails from the others, meaning that the story will only feature him and several original characters, probably as NPCs. That way he can really grow and Sonic lore can truly expand to new directions.

Out of the games I've played:
1. Frontiers, pretty much for the reasons you mentioned + the otherworldly soundtrack!
2. Mania, I didn't mind the repetitiveness because of the drop dash and elemental shields, also its extra content is awesome with Blue Spheres and Mean Bean!
3. 3 and Knuckles, it's a polished game with just the right length.
4. Colors, the Wisps really took exploration to another level and the final boss is PEAK CINEMA!
5. Superstars, aside from the turn-based bosses being a slog and battle mode...existing...the drop dash adds a lot to the classic formula like it did in Mania, and it's one of few games to give me that childlike wonder these days!
6. 2 is a great game in general, but it's way too short. I can beat it in less than an hour easily, just by taking the middle paths.
7. CD is polished and I like the exploration, but the levels themselves are baby's first Sonic game. I can beat this start to finish in less than 45 minutes.
8. The original had 3 good levels: Green Hill, Star Light, and Scrap Brain's first two acts.
9. Sonic 4 Episode 2 looks bad and plays bad, but I can think of jankier games.
10. Forces was basically Temple Run for 2/3 of the game.
11. Sonic 4 Episode 1 exists. It costs money for whatever unholy reason. Controls terribly, Sonic can stand on THE SIDE OF WALLS, IT'S ONLY FOUR ZONES, AND THE MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE A TESLA COIL.
Now this is a unique list! And Aside from me, it's the first time I've seen anyone liking Sonic Rush Adventure that much, Which is totally understandable cuz it is pretty darn good. The only one I couldn't bring myself to include on the list is Frontiers, it's too boring for my liking. Still, Great to hear your favourites, Channel Pup 👌
Hard to rank a Top 15. My Top 5 are in order: Frontiers - Sonic 2 - Sonic Mania - Sonic 3K - SA1. Generations would be 6 and before Frontiers came out SA1 was my #1 and Generations was #5. Anyone wants to debate feel free im curious to see other peoples opinion. This is just my opinion and all opinions from everyone else are valid. Its all subjective after all. Also Sonic 2 at 11????? And Sonic 3k at 7???? I dont get those but respect the opinion. Also i do like Superstars quite a bit but i wouldnt put it in top tier sonic. Lack of elemental shields, the chaos powers are underwhelming and often slow down the game so i dont use them. A solid platforming exp for sure. But those 6 games i listed are the only ones i consider S tier Sonic games. Superstars id put in B tier. Which isnt bad. Quite enjoyable. 7.5/10 for me

My favorite Sonic games are basically the same (not Unleashed sadly, though granted I only ever experienced the Wii version as opposed to the ps3/xbox versions. Still enjoyed it though). SA2 and Frontiers are far and away my favorite Sonic games. SA2 was my first Sonic game, and the one I grew up with. I played the crap out of it, loved the story and characters, enjoyed hunting down all the upgrades for all the characters, loved the variety of playstyles and missions, everything. As for Frontiers, I picked it up around release ready to give it a shot after the disappointment that was Forces and oh my god was I ever pleased. The music, the gameplay, the story, all the nostalgia, it all captured my heart immediately. I still remember going through the levels and having fun recognizing what each level was from the layout (Sky Rail particularly stood out to me lol). I loved being able to zip around the overworld and go flying off anything, and I loved seeing the story and watching the characters get the growth they've desperately needed for years
Which game was Sonichu in? He's one of my favourite characters, but I've never been able to find him in any of the games.

I haven’t played it in years
I've honestly barely played Frontiers but from what I've played (I haven't actually played much tbf), and what I've seen of this game, I just don't get it. I don't get the hype around Frontiers. I was bored from what I played, the Cyberspace levels I've seen just take existing levels from other games without adding anything to improve the levels. Granted, I've seen a lot more than I've played. Maybe I'd enjoy the game more if I actually tried playing it for more than a couple hours but I just don't seem motivated to do so. I do intend on playing it at some point though. I can't see this being better than the Adventure games, Heroes, Generations or Unleashed even. It just look like Forces but with a hub world that has boring combat and platforming sections. But maybe it'll surprise me.
The Adventure games are my absolute favourite. I think I favour SA1 over SA2 because I think it handles the different characters better overall but the speed gameplay is basically just as good in SA2 as SA1 and even the treasure hunting in SA2 is technically probably better designed in terms of the levels. I just love how in SA1, other characters can go through the same sections as Sonic and have it play basically as good. Knuckles goes through sections of Sonic's Speed Highway and Red Mountain and it's still so good. Playing as Tails is so fun even though he is broken and his levels are much shorter than they should be (he should really go through all of Sonic's stages in full tbh). Amy is underrated in terms of her gameplay and story and Gamma is mech gameplay and story at its best. SA2 kind of ruins the mech stages despite making some improvements to it. Drags it out way too much, controls much worse than Gamma and it doesn't work as well with the linear level structure of SA2 imo. Gamma is underused in SA1 but is enjoyable in its entirety
I agree. I haven’t played through much of Frontiers (probably about 2 hours) but it’s not that fun. I love both Sonic Adventure games! In my opinion they are the best in the series. I also just don’t understand why everyone Frontiers loves so much. It is honestly easier for me to convince myself to play 06 than Frontiers. ( I’m not saying 06 is a better game I’m just saying that Sonic Frontiers took me less than 5 minutes to download. While it took me over 3 hours to get 06 so I’m determined to actually finish it. I literally had to set up an old Xbox 360 to get it to work and I had to wait in the room it was in for it to download for 1 1/2 hours because for some reason every 4 minutes it stopped.) Yeah so I don’t really like Sonic Frontiers, but I have always loved the Adventure games they are AMAZING!

All I say that frontiers have great aspects, yes they failed on some standard target of the game needed but they decided to make their own ambitious the main target.
If I have to look on your perspective I will be comparing unleashed because unleashed got ruined to me due to mainly the werehog stages and some other issues as well. There was even a TH-camr needle mouse who does not like generations that much

Idk man, sonic frontiers didn’t do a single thing better than Unleashed in my opinion. In fact, the further I get away from the game the less I liked it. I like it less than unleashed, generations, and more.

My favorite Sonic Game is still Sonic Mania. My dream game is more of a 3D Sonic Mania with Sonic 3K and SA1 artstyle and Sonic Advance 2 Abilities.
Personally, I wouldn't even have Heroes or Unleashed in the Top 15. I'm not sure how I'd rank mine, but I know I'll have 2, CD, 3 & Knuckles, Adventure, Adventure 2, Colors, Generations, Mania, and Frontiers on there.
Frontiers is pretty cool but it just has too many little hiccups to be in my top 5 but probably in my top 10. Superstars really disappointed me tbh the levels are fun but the boss fights range from ok to horrid.
here is my top 10:
1. sonic frontiers : i am not really a big fan of very realistic and super cinematic open world games, because of that i love sonics take on the "open world" genre , instead of trying to make the game feel like a movie, they just tried to make a fun game and i love it.
2. project-06 : i dont care that it is fan made because it is one of the best sonic experiences of my life.
3. sonic 3 & knuckles : a perfect ballance between speed, platforming and exploration.
4. Tails Adventure : i suck at metroidvania games, they are too challenging for my tiny brain, but i love this game because its probably the only game in this genre that instead of a hard and challenging experience, it tries to be a laid back and relaxing game, i know the game is slow but it makes sense for a tails game that instead of running fast and hitting hard, take it slow and think and explore to become stronger to defeat you enemies.
5. sonic rush 1 : the low poly models and the music and fast paced level design , turns this game to a very charming and energetic game.
6. sonic advance 1 : to me this game is the real sonic 4 because it still makes a good enough ballance between speed , platforming and exploration .
7. sonic heroes : its one of the most unique 3d platformers ever.
8. sonic 1 : maybe not a good sonic game but as a traditional 2d platformer this game is beautiful.
9. sonic 2 : sometimes it focuses on speed so much that it forgets about platforming and exploration but it still is of of the best games ever ( yeah i like sonic 1 more because i find its zones and music more iconic ) .
10. sega superstars tennis : i know soncis name is not on the game but some sites consider this a sonic game and almost half of the roster is sonics characters so it counts as a sonic game in my opinion. and it is probably the most fun sports game i have ever played ( because i am not a fan of traditional sports game and this games over the top and unrealistic nature make this game anything but a traditional sports game ) .

My favorite game and number 1 is sonic heroes how people don't like it?
Hot take, I really dislike the adventure games, not for the stories I love the narratives, but the controls are horrible and janky. I played through all of SA2 and I was so happy for it to be over. Sonic and shadow’s gameplay is the most tolerable, but the mech and especially the treasure hunting stages are just so unfun. I understand how important these games are and why people love them, but I just can’t enjoy the actual games themselves.
The treasure hunting in SA2 suck on a first playthrough. When you know what you're doing and you know the levels, they're much more enjoyable.

Solid catalog if u ask me, a very underrated & overhated character and franchise. just cus his bad games ruined his legacy but any series with that many good games and several classics...can't be all that bad.

Sonic Colors overall has some pretty strong gameplay I would say....and is more stable then Heroes at least.
Sonic Heroes is ranked way too low.

@@best_mate456 I prefer the remastered zones in Mania but I agree that I'm exhausted of nostalgia pandering which is why I've grown to dislike base Sonic Generations.
Sonic Mania's soundtrack, first act level design & graphics is beautiful but blends in too much with the original zones, I'd prefer if they did more with the concept or brand new unique zones inspired by the old ones like Super Stars.

Its because Unleashed honestly deserved the hate and negative rebiews it got back then. No one asked to play for the werehog for most of the game. No one asked to be forced to collect medals. So yeah, it definitely has flaws. But its not a bad game. But it definitely dies have flaws, which is why its one of my least favorite sonic games. Its the same reason why Colors and Generations got much more positive reviews and overall love, because theres not as much padding. And you are not forced to use a tediuos gimmick for most of the game. And yes, i do think that Generations and colors is better than at least HD Unleashed
Hot take: Frontiers has the best soundtrack in the series. Change my mind (you can’t)
