I do my best to ignore it and push through-- if I transferred them they'd likely get another woman anyway, making another employee's day worse anyway. I'm just thankful that both our project manager (who is a thirty year veteran who will gladly cuss out an employee over the phone for giving us crap) and our night-time manager (a no-nonsense, powerful personality and won't take that kind of crap from anyone) have our backs, so I know I can always escalate it.

The Last Story just made me remember something that happened when I was 18. I was a hostess at one of America's favorite bar and grills. I am a white girl and one of the white waitresses walked up to me and in a very snotty tone told me not to set any black people in her section. She didn't ask she demanded. The next three groups of people that came through my door just happened to be black. And they all showed up at the same time. I was on the verge of running out of my job because of what I had just witnessed with this waitress. I talked to all three of the families before I sat them. I let them know what was going on because they can see I was upset when they came in. And then I got a very malicious idea in my head. I asked them if I could triple seat them in her section. And they all agreed. So I triple set her with three black families. That woman look like she wanted to tear my face off. She was in such a nasty mood and had so much to do that of course the manager had to be called. He came and talked to me because the waitress complained about me and when I explained to him what I did and that I had the families in on it he patted me on the back. And the best thing was all three families got their meals for free that day! With me being only 18 that was one of the most racist things I had ever witnessed in my life. I was so glad I was able to combat it in a legal way.

My mom worked at a public library in Alabama in the 70's. And one of the patrons was so rabidly racist that they basically had to hide their one black staff member whenever they saw him coming. She has some quite interesting stories from that library. Like the guy who would take his books to the front desk to check them out in a galvanized bucket that he would slam down on the counter. Or the guy with so many overdue books that, instead of negotiating a reduced late fee (which they gladly would have done to get them all back), he buried them in his back yard. I think the cops discovered the missing books...

I was managing the Maintenance Department at a small military base when I saw a work order requesting a hole big enough to run 50 copper wire pairs from a server on one side of a steel-reinforced cast concrete wall to the room on the other side, which was going to be a computer lab. I planned to strap a massive drill to one fork of a forklift, mount a 6 inch hollow core diamond bit with used water to cool it and flush the stuff being cut out, and drive the forklift into the building to access the wall and support the drill. The IT folks said the server could not be turned off nor moved. I said we could just destroy it in place! They objected. Then I found the IT folks could run fiber through an existing small hole and convert to copper on the other side. Sometimes you just need to offer an unacceptable alternative and let management decide.

The one from U/TheMCP reminds me of a job I had where we were a tiny IT team of maybe 8 people (including the server admins) for a large company. One region went passed IT to create their own program (More so, they bought a really cheap program and edited it to their liking). Which without documentation on how the program works or even access to the code, we had no way of getting around to figuring out how the thing worked. Mind you, due to the small size of the IT support in the company, all management was made to know that if they bring something into the network without IT's permission, we will NOT support it. We can't make you not use it, but you're on your own, basically. A group in the northeast did something REALLY similar to this story. It was on one stupid laptop and if that laptop turned off, "the program" stopped working. Now each region had their own expenses. When they last person who knew how to access the stupid program left the company, IT suggested just leaving it online in their building's server room to let it do it's thing and buying the next employee a new laptop to start fresh. To MuCh MoNeY. Bless they poor bastards who got that laptop. It was a nightmare every time. Bonus info? The "program" was an addon to the old user's email that automatically printed emails with a certain title. It saved the people using the program maybe 2 clicks. It might seem Callous that IT took a hands-off approach, yea, but when you have hundreds of thousands of people in a company all deciding they want to do something "their own way" it gets impossible to learn every detail of every buggy piece of crap brought in by some manager thinking they did something AMAAAZING for productivity.
