Toured with Magnum in 1986, and met the guys several times after, in Norway when we lended them our backline at the Sandane festival. Hanged with them in 1992, and payed them a visit in 2017 when they played a gig in our hometown. Tony was always suck a humble guy, great songwriter, guitarist, and really nice to talk to. Will miss him and his music. Rest in Peace Tony. Keep the Night Light Burning.❤
Very sad news about Tony, Magnum have been my favourite rock band since 1978 when I first heard Kingdom of Madness. My condolences to family members, band members past and present and all friends and fans of the band. Let's make sure that Magnum music lives forever. DB
Tony Clarkin was a genius. His catalogue of songs is massive and to be both so productive and never compromise with the quality of each song is amazing. Im absolutely gutted by the news about his passing. He is so unique and such a underrated songwriter, producer and guitarist.
Devastated to hear about Tony. I was brought up a Magnum fan by parents who are huge fans and my first gig was seeing Magnum on the Storytellers tour at the age of 11. They took me with them to all the gigs they went to, we still went together as adults. It's really the end of an era for me 😢😢. Thanks for the lovely tribute.
Back in 1988 or 89 Kingddom Come opened for Magnum as they toured the Wings of Heaven album. Saw the show in Göteborg (Sweden), already a big fan of Magnum and their show was amazing. Kottak completely blew me away and as an aspiring drummer I wanted to do what he did.
Hi guys.. on the 7th of January - TWO of my musical idols passed away - Neil Peart and Tony Clarkin, two years apart. RIP to them both. Keep the night light burning 😞👍👍
Thankyou for tribute to Tony a rock legend my first rock love Magnum always my heros got to see boys and meet have drink with bob in Birmingham England our locals boys RIP Tony a poet and rock Legend
RIP Tony, have had the pleasure to listen to Magnum for the last forty years and having seen them live numerous times. Lets get the new album to the top of the charts as a final and well deserved tribute. My thoughts to all his family and the band members. You will forever be my favourite band.
Rip Tony and James Seen them both at the same gig at the Glasgow barrowlands on the wings of heaven tour in 1988 Kingdom come supported I'd never heard them before It was my first concert I was 14 Thank you guys
Absolutely gutted at the sad news. Tony was a songwriting and guitar hero of mine for 40 years. It was great to finally see Magnum for the first time on their last tour at the Glasgow Garage. Thanks for doing a really heartfelt tribute guys. ❤
Tony wasn't a flashy guitar player, but he had a distinctive sound and a knack for great ear worm tunes, we've got a new Album to remember him by in a couple of days, thanks Magnum for keeping it real all these years, thanks Tony for all the cracking tunes! "The Spirit" carries on!
Tony was such a great song writer and performer. Always understated and humble. Saw magnum first in 79 and loved them ever since. James on the other hand seemed a tortured soul. A very capable drummer who played on many good rock albums, often uncredited. Both will be sorely missed.
Great video - thanks - Magnum are an underrated and classy band. They will be much missed especially here in the UK. A sad day, but the music will live on!
Feel devastated with Tony's death. His music is part of my life since I started listening to Magnum ( one of my favourite bands)with Wings of Heaven. James Kottak is great loss too, good drummer, great work with Kingdom Come and Warrant
Tony was a great player who was a superb songwriter, with a huge catalogue of top quality songs. I had the pleasure of seeing Magnum live quite a few times and it is apt looking back that each night singer Bob Catley reminded everyone that Tony wrote all the songs for us.
I remember seeing Magnum supporting Krokus in 1982, I hadn't really heard them but the next day I bought Chase The Dragon and was a fan ever since. The biggest tribute I can pay to Tony is that he was an outstanding song writer. I remember someone saying if you think it easy to write a good tune go and try, Tony wrote so many. Vastly underrated but so much appreciated by those who discovered him, the band and the songs. RIP Tony.
Steven/ Pete. Another classy tribute. At 6️⃣1️⃣ ,a saying that “ flew over my head “ years ago, is now so prevalent- “ TOMORROW is not promised to anyone “. Thanks Pete/ Steven 👍💯
Magnum are one my my favourite bands and I have to thank Tony for all the pleasure he has given me since I discovered Magnum in the early eighties. RIP Tony you are a legend.
Met them both: Tony was very quiet, friendly and like you two I admire his body of work: Have over 15 albums of Magnum. (Do you remember he even played drums on "Breath of life" ?!?) As you said last 20 years since "Brand New Morning" all albums have been (very) good to great imho!!! *(That is 10 albums!!!)* Many concerts I will remember forever. James was also a very friendly easy-going guy and in between SCORPIONS he toured with his own band KOTTAK to very small audiences. It was there when I got to meet him and talked to him (and Athena at the time...) but also later when he still was in the Scorpions. He absolutely did not behave like the "star" his status would assume; could still talk to him ( even call him on the phone! - which was very rare for musicians this caliber) before arena-shows and it was the same when playing infront of 50 people on his own. *May both of them rest in peace, thank you for the great music.*
Had some of Magnum things off and on through the years never had the full discography though Already headed for the great gig in the sky we're not even barely in the second week of January
Sad, sad day for rock 'n roll. RIP Tony and James and deep condolences to their families. Magnum has been my favorite rock band since 98/99 ( yeah I arrived late to the party but never left) I was all pumped up waiting the new album, this hit me pretty hard. Rest In Power 😞🙏🤘🍺
I heard it yesterday from a friend. I’m so sad… Magnum is such an amazing band, and the (working) relationship between Tony and Bob is iconic, to keep this amazing band going while they never received the succes they deserved. Thanks so much guys for this tribute…
Magnum are one of my favourite bands ever. So sad. Music fans better get used to seeing our idols passing with so many of the members of the greatest bands all entering their twilight years. Thank you for the amazing music Tony
Further to my earlier post I remember when Magnum toured the U.K. in 1988 on " Wings of Heaven " tour the support act was Kingdom Come with James Kottak on drums. 🙏
Shocked and saddened to hear of Tony’s passing. I only got into Magnum in the last few years after discovering them through this channel. My heart goes out to his family, friends and fans as well as those of James. RIP to both.
Yet another sad day - I'll now cherish the Magnum Ticket I had for their cancelled show at Holmfirth and await delivery of the new album - Here comes the Rain a somewhat apt title. I still clearly remember the first time I saw Magnum when they opened for Whitesnake at Bournemouth WInter Gardens back in November 1978 - had never heard of them before but totally won me over that evening. Will be blasting out their catalogue from start to finish until the new one arrives - and will be sticking on my Scorps DVDs with the Kottak Attack and play it loud. 😢😢😢
Same experience here. Saw them supporting Whitesnake at Manchester Apollo on the same tour you went to. Also never heard of them, but on getting back to Leeds and a few days later bought Kingdom Of Madness and the rest was history. So many fans of this wonderful band will be in great shock and sadness, but we still have the music to remember the genius of Tony Clarkin and the driving force behind Magnum. You will be missed Tony.
I thought Steven was just posting a Magnum link earlier cuz of their new album coming out. And the last time I saw a pic of Kottak he looked really rough, liked he'd been living hard. RIP to both. Your music lives on!
Really sad news. Ive been a Magnum fan for 40 years near enough, and they are the only band i was ever lucky enough to see headline at the legendary Marquee Club in London. I will be getting the new album this weekend and will raise a glass as it plays... Never saw James Kottak live, but have some of his album appearances, including Kingdom Come, Wild Horses and, of course, Scorpions. RIP gentlemen.
Great tribute to Tony and James guys. My first thought when I heard about Tony was ..." Jeez! Pete will never get to see Magnum live in the U.K. now!" I have seen Magnum play may times in Newcastle (U.K.) and they were always on top form. As for James Kottak ,I've seen him play with Scorpions twice and will never forget the moment he stood on his drum stool to show off the back of his t-shirt which said "Rock and Roll Forever " then took off his shirt to unveil a tattoo on his back which had exactly the same inscription! In the words of the great Tony Clarkin "Keep your nightlight burning " ❤10:52
Been a Magnum fan for several years , seen them live as well and had the pleasure of meeting the band in a local hostelry sone years ago. What a shock this news is, very very sad to hear Tony is no longer with us. We've lost a great songwriter and guitarist. RIP Tony.
RIP Tony Clarkin, an absolute legend. Great video guys, a hard watch but a lovely touching and poignant tribute and reminiscence for the great man. And also to James Kottak, I'm not so familiar with James's work, but again great work guys. Lots of love to both families and friends of these great musicians who gave enjoyment to millions of people, thank you both and rest in peace.
First saw Magnum in 1982 on the Chase the Dragon Tour at Gravesend Woodville Halls.Got to meet them after there show.I went on to see them everywhere all over the UK.Last saw them in 2018 in London .Tony Clarkin was the most unassuming rock guitarist, songwriter, genius. You are truly with the angels in the throne room in Heaven Man ,finally away from The Kingdom of Madness.
Very sad that these 2 have passed away. There was a connection between the 2 for me as well. I saw Kingdom Come supporting Magnum in St Albans on the tour for that album & James Kottak was definitely the star of the show for KC.
Thanks both for this video. Very sad news indeed. Tony et al have been part of my life since the late 70’s, what a consistent catalogue. Am working my way through the albums and a few drams tonight. RIP and my condolences to his family, friends and band mates.
Almost four years to the day that we heard of Neil Pearl’s passing, the loss of Tony Clarkin is equally as devastating to me. Respect too to James Kottak. We are losing our heroes by the day, but who is stepping into their shoes?
Started listening with, on a story tellers night in the 80's . Kind of fell out of music with kids and career but found them again in 2020 and have listened to every single album over and over in the past few years. Was lucky to see them on their last tour and will continue to enjoy their music for many years.
Same as you Steven , Magnum have been a constant with me since Storytellers night . Saw them on last two tours and this is such a shock for me . Thanks both for this great tribute .
Greetings from Northumberland. This is a shock like Steven magnum have been there all my music years from 78 till now wit a vert very underrated song writer n guitarist. Very sad day. Man the new release is gonna be a hard listen.
So sad. Tony Clarkin such a great player/writer/band. Thanks guys for this tribute. Thoughts also to James Kottak, I own a number of Kingdom Come albums including of course those first two albums.
Oh my goodness, this is a huge shocker!! Magnum has been a big influence since 80's and I was filled with excitement in anticipation for the new record coming out...now this tradgedy!!! T Clarkin is the entire musical side of what Magnum is..I am gutted and sad...God speed Tony...now heaven has an amazing musician. When I hear the new record it will be a very somber moment...😪
A popup about this came up during an afternoon online meeting and it caught me by surprise. Finally here to watch the tribute by you and Steven and want to thank the two of you for your time and passion for the music discussed on the channel and for the artists who create that music. Had never heard of Magnum before finding SoT four years ago. Don't have the complete catalogue but adding regularly. But to the point....sad news today. Thanks to James Kottak and Tony Clarkin for the music they created for their listeners. RIP, gents. And thanks again, Pete and Steven.
Hi guys. So sad about Tony Clarkin what a lovely guy. He was not flashy he was always the guy who just played and Bob always introduced last at the end of every set. The man who wrote all this amazing music. Bob will be devastated. Magnum always release January albums followed by the tour. Seen 20 plus times from the beginning. Amazing band. James Kottak great drummer loved his work with Kingdom Come and Scorpions. Beautiful eulogy for both guys. Thank you so much.
I have been listening to Magnum since Kingdom of Madness when Geoff Barton was raving about them in Sounds back in 1978. As you say, such a consistently good band who centred around Tony Clarkin. Though I lost touch with them for a while, it was SoT that brought me back to them. Saw them live 3 or 4 times over the years. A huge and sad loss.
It was actually the album ranking show you both did that prompted me to finally check magnum out and I was not disappointed such a fantastic back catalogue and like saxon I think they havn't put a foot wrong since the start of the 2000s such a sad loss even before it was announced about his spinal issues I was hoping to catch them live this year rest in peace Tony 😢
I found out about Magnum from Pete (SoT) and Steven Reid last year. I have since gotten over 50 albums of theirs. I knew Tony Clarkin was having health issues, but this is a shock to hear of his passing. What a guitarist, song writer and performer. I am weeping and my condolences to his family, band members, and Magnum fans all over the world. The new album should be looked as a tribute to Tony and the band and its release should still happen. Another EP album or box set should address Tony's passing. I've already pre-ordered the new album. RIP Tony Clarkin - long live his legacy of Magnum! We are losing too many rockers who gave their life to entertain us, so we may get through whatever we trying to overcome or going through. These are the Peacemakers!
Absolutely gutted about Tony Clarkin. I love his guitar playing and first saw him and the band at the Reading Rock Festival in 1980. One of my top 10 ever albums is Chase the Dragon, which I bought as a student as soon as it came out. What a composer and what a unique guitar player - he will be sadly missed. I'm off to play my recording of the 1980 Reading gig with me in the audience, and revel in Tony's awesome music.
I am totally shocked by this news. Totally agree with your choice of Chase the Dragon, which is one of my very favourite albums also. Just like you I bought it when it came out, having got into Magnum end of 1978. I was also at that 1980 Reading Rock Festival - great memories! Tony Clarkin has left a fantastic legacy in his music. My thoughts go out to his family and of course Bob and all Magnum members past and present. A sad day.
Very sad news, was looking forward to the new album. In tribute I'm blasting out some Magnum on my commute to work this morning. Some great albums in their catalogue. Will also listen to some Kingdom Come later, not listened to them for years. RIP.
Tony Clarkin hit sooo hard. I loved Magnum growing up, so it was a huge shock for me 😢😢.
RIP Tony.
Superb guitarist and sensational song writer. Will be sorely missed.
grazie Tony Clarkin per i magnifici ed indimenticabili album che ci hai donato. sempre nel cuore THE SPIRIT R.I.P.
From California…. Rest in Peace Tony… hearts are broken here…
Can’t believe it. Tony was an exceptional song writer and a brilliant guitar player. RIP Tony.

Keep our night light burning for Tony Clarkin
RIP Tony C;larkin. A genius. Thank you.

RIP Tony, big fan of Magnum. Brilliant song writer wouldn't say he was the flashiest guitar player, but is playing always served the song.
Quite possibly the greatest live band ever- seen them many times and never came away disapointed RIP Tony.
Tony Clarkin was a genius. His catalogue of songs is massive and to be both so productive and never compromise with the quality of each song is amazing. Im absolutely gutted by the news about his passing. He is so unique and such a underrated songwriter, producer and guitarist.

Horrible way to to end up passing like Tony did
you have a very rare incurable spinal illness and within less than a month it takes you

Such sad news. One of the UK's most underrated song writers. Thoughts are with his family.
I don't mean to be disrespectful but he didn't do to bad to get to 77.
Still sucks man @@martymartin2894

bothe great muscians
That first album by Wild Horses that James played on is such an overlooked gem.
Amazing songwriter allways been into magnum since early 80s won't be the same without him
It was actually the album ranking show you both did that prompted me to finally check magnum out and I was not disappointed such a fantastic back catalogue and like saxon I think they havn't put a foot wrong since the start of the 2000s such a sad loss even before it was announced about his spinal issues I was hoping to catch them live this year rest in peace Tony 😢
Blimey, very sad. Saw Magnum in 1984 I think it was at The Marquee club in London. A special band. Thanks Tony for all the music.
Magnum "We all need to be loved" was the song that hooked me into loving Magnum. 😢 Sad day.
Cannot fault anything James said. Rest in peace brother.
m digging the back catalogue out
Lovely tribute guys would love a ranking one day of Scottish band Big Country with Simon
I started listening to them because of SOT and Steven in particular
A sad day.
Stunned, daughter bought me tickets for christmas then tour cancelled. Seen them every time in Scotland plus England.
Tony Clarkin will indeed be missed. He encapsulated Magnum to a very high degree.
As a Brummie im gutted he has passed. A fan since i won the Storyteller's album and a ticket to the tour back in '85.
Very sad news, was looking forward to the new album. In tribute I'm blasting out some Magnum on my commute to work this morning. Some great albums in their catalogue. Will also listen to some Kingdom Come later, not listened to them for years. RIP.
REST IN PEACE TONY 0🙏
R.I.P. Tony and James
