Fun episode Phil and Pete. My picks: Gibbons Heard It On The X Santana Samba Pa Ti Buchanan Down By The River Kulick Sweet Victory Betts Atlanta's Burning Down Page Pride and Joy Derringer Teenage Love Affair Zappa Montana Iommi Evil Eye Beach Can't Get Enuff
It's amazing how much Pete and Phil think alike! Also, for Tony Iommi, I would pick "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" because it's got the heavy riff, but the quieter moments, as well.
Great pick Pete on Billy Gibbons, my pick is Just Got Paid. I love his recent solo album, it is Billy Gibbons, just a bit more refined. Santana, I would pick Singing Winds, Crying Beasts, Too many Page songs to choose and for Rick Derringer I agree with Phil, that was my first thought.
I picked my songs mentally as I listened to the show. I tried to make my pick before either of you stated your picks. Great show! Gibbons - La Grange, my favorite Rev. Billy G solo is when the song shifts to C and he cuts loose. Santana - my very first thought was Europa. It's so beautiful and truly displays Carlos' lyrical style Buchanan - Roy's Bluz from Live Stock. It's just sick. The man was freak of nature. Kulick, Bob - I mostly know him from The Crimson Idol and Paul's solo album. I love his playing on Crimson Idol but I'd have to listen to it again to pick a favorite. Maybe Chainsaw Charlie. Betts - Nobody Knows from An Evening With 1st Set. Dickey wrote the song which shows off his great riff writing, and his love of major scales, then he puts on a master class in how to build a solo. It's a stunning achievement. Page - Page as a guitarist is composer, arranger, experimentalist, and soloist. He is adept at mixing acoustic and electric guitars. He was a master of alternate tunings. My first thought was Stairway To Heaven but I think Ten Years Gone represents all those things I mentioned much better. TYG, final answer. Derringer - my first instinct was Good Morning Little School Girl from Johnny Winter And Live. Rick and Johnny rip it up and push each other to insane heights all over that album. Zappa - I'm a Zappa novice but I've had Hot Rats for about 30 years so I'm going with Gumbo Variations Iommi - Damn. I love Iommi. The riff Meister. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath I think encapsulates the best of his guitar personality. The main riff is crushing, it has a cool effect on it showing a bit of his experimental side, the middle bits are jazzy and light, and it all goes back to crushing riffs with a classic descending Iommi/Butler unison run. It's a perfect Black Sabbath song. Beach - I don't know his work enough to comment. Kudos to Phil for picking In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed from Wipe The Windows. I feel like that's a forgotten Allmans record. I personally love it and Dickey shines throughout that album. Chuck and Lamar pumped a lot of life into the band and it shows on E Reed, Jessica, Ramblin' Man (Dickey's end solo is off the hook), Southbound... great record and worthy of more attention. Thanks Phil!
Rich Cattino will be happy with the Winger mention! Reb Beach is a GREAT player! For Iommi, it might sound surprising but his playing that impresses me the most is after the Ozzy years! His style went from very sludgey to a more articulate sound and that evolution in his style is so impressive, it shows how much hard rock ground he can cover. His range honestly blows my mind.
Probably my first Zappa whoa guitar moment was Toad-O Line off Joe's Garage I. Totally agree with both live No Quarter and Stairway otherworldly. Cool show!
Hard to pick an Iommi song cuz he's my fav guitarist. But for me, it's National Acrabat. It's got the wah wah, its got the killer riff, it's got the solo and the change of pace during the song, where it's almost 2 different songs in 1. Honorable mentions are Killiing yourself to live, snowblind and into the void
Billy Gibbons: La Grange Carlos Santana: Black Magic Woman Dickey Betts: Blue Sky Jimmy Page: Achilles Last Stand Frank Zappa: The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution Tony Iommi: Into the Void
There are great players and there are extra talented artist than any player .. for example Rory Gallagher .. This man is more than a guitarist & it does him injustice when his only referred as a guitarist.. Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Jeff Beck & those who came after them are highly gift Guitarist .. .. But Rory is far more than just a guitarist, not just referring how he can sing .. But how he is on top as a songwriter & composer to create unique styles..
Great episode. I matched several picks. I remember going to see Song Remains the Same as a 14 year old kid and to my horror they put the fantasy footage over the No Quarter solo! Ugh!🤬
Gibbons, Brown Sugar, excellent choice. Up through el loco, I love it all. So good with the guitar and drums. Live? How can the creativity and variety in the albums not translate into improvisational gold. It's dreck, I really don't get it.
I like that Phil mentioned a couple of times how some solos are sorta joined at the hip to Comfortably Numb. The one that I always think about as the little brother to Comfortably Numb is a song by Trevor Rabin called ‘I Heard You Cry Wolf’ from the album Wolf. The solo/ outro is very similar in style and structure. Any thoughts ?
Whoo hoo Pete and Phil getting together for a monthly nice
This was a lot of fun ! Phil :)
Love seeing Phil Aston (Villa). UTFV!

Phil another great addition to SoT. Hopefully he will be a fixture on the channel
Wonderful show as ever. My two favourite TH-cam channels and people
It's amazing how much Pete and Phil think alike! Also, for Tony Iommi, I would pick "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" because it's got the heavy riff, but the quieter moments, as well.
My favorite S O T show!
Brown Sugar is a great pick for Billy. For me it's Cheap Sunglasses all day!
Witness was a one and done take solo by the phenomenal Reb Beach. Headed For A Heartbreak is hard to pass.
Jerry Garcia, Black muddy river, Stella Blue both sublime
Voodoo Chile. Billy Gibbons? La Grange? Blue Jean Blues? Fool For Your Stockings? Nasty Dogs?
Really enjoying this new monthly show. Keep em coming.
I have never heard Pete mention Roy Buchanan or Danny Gatton on this channel before. Both unique voices on the Tele and big favorites.
For people across the other side of the pond, you have very similar taste. Great stuff.
Gibbons - La Grange, Santana - Black Magic Woman, Buchanan - Ramon’s Blues, Kulick - Goodbye (Paul Stanley), Betts - Jessica, Page - 10 Years Gone, Derringer - R&R Hoochie Koo, Zappa - Peaches En Regalia, Iommi- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Beach - Love Child (Whitesnake - the Purple Album)
Roy Buchanan was an absolute monster and I might have chosen the Hendrix medley of Hey Joe/Foxy Lady
Go Cheffy !!!

Wow, I only picked this up last week. I had been after it for a long time. Phil
For Iommi - Falling of the edge of the world....
