- No creature can live without this magic mineral -- and no living organism can produce it on its own. Amoebas, algae or humans -- all life-forms are completely at the mercy of this simple chemical compound. In all bodies of water on earth, there is salt in abundance, and animals and humans have always been able to extract the valuable crystals from water -- directly through their organs or with the aid of evaporation in salt lagoons.

No black market smuggling, no child labor, no adverse environmental impact. Just honest work for an honest living. They ought to be earning more and living more comfortably for their toil.
And I happen to have a small bag of Bolivian salt in my pantry which I use sparingly for making Mexican and Latin American food. I will remember this video in deep appreciation each time I reach for the bag, and other bags of salt I have (Sicilia, Kiribati, Israel, and Japan).
These people work in harmony. The Culture. Music. Salt is a VALUABLE source indeed.

We should honor these humble people ..,repeat their names and keep them in our hearts when we waste or begin to take our easy lives for granted. The children with the parents is something we can't relate to. Not all bad but not fair in our Western view of what a family is.

This documentary really makes you appreciate some of the hard work from these other countries. All of that just to make a small living. The unsung heroes of salt, a vital resource.
Respect for these hard working people, most of people today take salt for granted, as told in this documentary at one time it was like gold and money.
We should be thankful to God for providing salt in abundance.
My favorite scene in this documentary was of two very old ladies in the bus, so innocent.
All the people who have seen this documentary are at least better than people who waste their time in watching movie gossip. 🍟🍗

I just love this. The music and the sights are so beautiful.
Utterly spellbinding dedication to the cultivation of history, resource distribution & grounded passionate documentary making. I was in no manner prepared for the heart rending musical performance at 36:08. It is so beautiful yet tragic to know that hundreds of thousands of miners have worked & died for mankind to have survived, & to literally see their carved faces slowly diminish as their last remnant is taken by the mineral they were intertwined to is not only heartbreaking, but a haunting foreshadowing of our own counterparts.
What more can I say? Simply a must watch perspective on how none of us are in no way truly free to exact our destiny; for without Sodium Chloride, we are just as those statues are. Husks depleting in accordance with the chaos of nature, calling for its balance once more. Nasty, Brutish, & short lived. I shall never take salt for granted again.

Good documentary. The pan flute music was beautifully haunting. The entire film seemed sad in a way perhaps because those who work the salt fields have hard lives.

It's good to be reminded now and then not to take things for granted...same with fresh water......which in some ways is more valuable than gold.......just one day without water is not very pleasant.......
Absolutely incredible! I have never seen the mostly low-tech salt production process as conducted in these five areas. Nice to know that these workers still exist, though their's is not an easy life, by any means. I salute their fortitude and dedication. They must derive considerable satisfaction from their work or they wouldn't continue doing it. Many thanks to Secrets of Nature for producing this jewel. Great narration!

Civilization rides on the back of domesticated animals. Yet we hardly ever show them any real care and appreciation. We own them, yet we think they should be ours to do whatever we want with in anyway we want. I hope anyone who abuses them comes back several times as one of them.

It just got me thinking bc it’s of no significance to me .. unless it’s something the lord calls us to do , be or focus on and spend our effort doing or put our hearts on , I don’t care what the world does .. other than , as I said , there’s value in wisdom and of course also , having respect for those who are our elders , to pay attention to their wisdom .. but outside of that , it’s no significance to me what Washington or anyone else so falsely glorified within history books may have done .. seems like an awful expense and effort to obtain something that didn’t readily come from areas indigenous to tne area he resided .. Perhaps ppl didn’t care about whether things were sourced from other countries and regions in that time, as trade was often beneficial among ppl internationally. Now , However , it’s not well received , not should be living in excess as these typical self serving ppl in positions of power or authority or among the over paid and attention seeking celebrities, as they all promote horrible examples while benefiting off status and money and the ppl who just idolize them and coddle their every move.
No offense but this is a informational, and enjoyable documentary. Seeing these people continue the work that many generations have worked.

THE DEAL ABOUT THE LLAMAS IS FASCINATING! THEY CARRY SALT 45 MILES ONE WAY, THEN MAIZE BACK TO THEIR HOME, THE 45 MILES BACK & MUST REST THE REST OF THE YEAR FROM THIS. THIS IS AROUND 40 MINS IN. TRULY INTERESTING.
I ended up in the hospital a year or so ago with IV's stuck in me for almost a week because I got too low on sodium from drinking too much water for too long.
I really know how important it is now.
