  • This is the unusual story of a little-known insect : the water beetle. Having spent the winter beneath the ice, the water beetle which can walk, swim, and fly, stirs with the first signs of spring. Its habitat : a small pond. Its neighbors : dragonflies, frogs and newts. Its daily life : survival. Between two skirmishes, it gives birth to some twenty larvae of varying kinds...only the most voracious will make it to adulthood before the pond dries out.

    Oh boy , I feel overwhelmed. Am I the only 1 that loves Wildlife Documentaries, found loads on TH-cam, saved as many as you can to playlist. Realise that you have over 100 and don’t even know where to start? I find a new TH-cam channel and if they have lots of full docs, then I feel compelled to the extent that I MUST save to playlist. I’m kinda having a laugh but I’m kinda serious, at same time. I feel like a hard core drug addict. I don’t even have enough time to watch all these docs and I still can’t stop adding to list. 😭

    I think the sound effects are cool. Makes it more interesting. If the scenes were just silent, it would seem there was something lacking from the film... You wouldn't be able to put your finger on it but something would seem missing and off... I think the sound effects- weather a bit overdone or not- were necessary.

      I agree with you to a certain extent, and while I wholeheartedly agree that a water beetle laying its eggs in Iris stalks would not sound like a human chowing down on a stick of celery! My only disagreement/dispute with you would be that we don't know how these sub-aquatic sounds appear or present to other pond-dwellers... I am no expert, not by a very very long shot! but having owned fish and other aquatic creatures for 20+ years, I know that they are capable of picking up things we would not have thought possible. just my 2 cents...

    This is a great video, very good quality with some really nice shots. One question: Is the 'green monster' really a dragonfly nymph or a damselfly nymph? I did think damselfly nymphs had the three fins at the end of their abdomen.

    • @peterashby-saracen3681
      @peterashby-saracen3681 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think there was some confusion between the two - the nymph in the pond was a dragonfly, then what emerged was definitely a damselfly and then we briefly saw a shot of a dragonfly.... poor continuity there.

    Why did they name the last larva to hatch Number Three? I kept thinking maybe they just meant that one was going to be the third to reach the surface, but then the thing with Number Two happened and... blew that theory out of the water.
    I really want to know if they legitimately kept track of each one during the filming process and wrote it down, or if they just cobbled some footage together and made up a story about it. That one adult water beetle was their father? Please.

  • @AlichinoAi

    Ok in my opinion I wouldn’t have noticed all the sound effects if I hadn’t gone into the comment section first and all the complaints about them. I became more aware of what I was hearing while watching this, which is what made it distracting....
    BUT...
    Honestly, besides the hatching & snail eating sounds, the rest wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be. Is the sound quality exaggerated? Yes..
    And yet it still managed to kept me intrigued & was overall, an enjoyable program to watch.
