I wore a Salomon Adv Skin 12 set pack with a couple of 500ml flasks for my 1st marathon (3:55). Pure water in one and electrolytes in the other. It was a warm day and wanted to be sure I kept hydrated. It did its job and also kept the pressure off at the early, very busy water stations.
Fantastic video. Wish I had something as thorough as this for when I did my first Marathon. Heading into my 3rd soon I still learnt something super important... And that's to be better prepared with dry clothes in the race bag. I was quite shocked with the cold shivers I got after my last marathon.
Great video Kieran! Good luck with Manchester. My first marathon is in 4 weeks and ill be doing: Under armour streaker t shirt UA speedpocket shorts with half tight base layer (with pockets for phone and gels etc) Danish Endurance socks Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 Think thats me. Ill have some SIS Beta gels. 40g of carbs so carry less than the smaller gels, although i will pack a couple of the SIS nootropic ones for a change of taste and some caffeine at some point during the race. Think i am set!
I have a face towel in my bag to wipe off the sweat (and rain), because I’m a heavy sweater. I also add a smaller towel to my Naked Running belt in case sweat gets in my eyes, and because I’m usually too dead to get my bag right away.
Hi Kieran I'll see you there, although you'll likely be starting before me as I'm a. circa 3.30 runner. Did Manchester last year it was great. City Centre and Altrincham highlights. I think if you're running for a charity (I'm doing pancreatic cancer this year), you may be able to informally get changed in their tents? I also get Reynaud fingers, but hoping the weather will be ok. Those toe protector ideas are a good tip thanks! Definitely comfy tracksuit bottoms, underwear, t shirt socks, hoodie to change into essential. Adios Pro 3 for me. I saw TH-camr Running with Andy there last year, enjoy!!
On the day I take a PF electrolyte tab at each water table (about 6) - I pre hydrate the day before and morning with 1500. All this works a treat for me!
I always take 4 / 5 salt tables (I use PH but there are others) in a smint tin which I put tissue paper in to stop the rattle . before getting to a water station that I want to use , I just pop the tin out get a tab , so it is at the ready (4 tabls is a 1000mg of sodium etc) , tried little baggies in New york but does not work if you get sweaty so an aluminium mint tin for the win.
Would you put safety pins into your wind breaker if needed to hold your number or would you recommend a number belt - even if you're already wearing a belt?
I won't run with the jacket. I tend to pin my number to my shorts though on the thigh so I can run with layers on top and discard if needed without having to worry about the number.
Any useful tips on where to get changed after a race? It seems that everywhere would be packed, and the portaloos are small and disgusting after a few hours. I have signed up to a few races where I will be traveling over an hour each way on public transport, so trying to think this through as last week after removing my singlet, I wore my dry T-shirt over a soaked bra and couldn’t change my bottoms. I was shivering by the time I got home
Hi, I don't know Manchester so well but I reckon hotels will be kind enough to let you use their toilets to change. Not a bad idea to scope out a gym as well, they might be generous enough to let you change if you ask nicely.
Do you use the stance ICON SPORT CREW SOCK or RUN CREW SOCKS? You say RUN crew but in the video it looks like you are wearing the ICON and the link you have in the description is for the icon.
Great vid, easily one of the best I’ve seen on this channel.
Thanks Martin, glad you liked it.
Hugely informative. Toe caps. Where have you been all my life. 😅. Keep up the great work
First marathon in Manchester for me - 3:35 is the goal haha, Prime X Strung 2 for me!
Wow, good luck Jason. Good shoe choice. Hope you bag your goal time.

It's a good shout this. I ran many of my early marathons with water. It gives you the confidence to have what you need with you.
This put my mind at ease! Chosen my prime x strung 2 to run Manchester this year 🙌🏻
Nice info! Add some baby wipes too for the sweat!!
Something to freshen up in the drop bag is a good idea!

There's nothing worse than the cold shivers post-race. Gets right into your bones fast.
NipEaze nipple covers are a must for me on any long run or even short runs where it rains or my chest gets wet from pouring water on my head
Never tried the nipple covers. 2Toms always looks after me.
I just use little round bits I cut out of kinesio tape on top of the nipple.
Great video. Loads of really useful info, thank you.
Cheers Simon. Glad it was useful.

Regarding toes I have found the Injinji socks a life saver, and they will hold the toe caps in place
Have tried them but can't get them on my feet!
Love 2toms saved me at marathon des sables... Great video.
Used it at the MDS as well. That was my first great experience with it. Been my go-to ever since.

Good shout. I tend to have my Buffs for this. That little wobble to the side after the finish!!!
Kieran, I finished the vid 2 hours ago... Can I finally put my hand down?
No. 😂😂
Toe-on-toe aggression!! 😲 (Great video; thanks Kieran! 👍🏼)
My toes need counselling.

Hope to see you out there. Hopefully without our cold dead fingers!
Thanks.. some great suggestions
Glad you found it useful.
Great video, but all I heard was euro dance music, let's go! 🎧😜
Forget super shoes, this is the real hack to shave 4% off your PB

The salt tabs? Or the 1000?

1st time at Manchester for me. Saucony End Pro 3.
Nice one Brian. Hope you're feeling good about it. And good shoe choice.

The Saltchews are quite good for this.
Nice one! See you there! (Doubtful, I know! But I'll say hi if I do!! 😂👍)
Fantastic. All the best for the taper.
Always recce a post race meeting place the day before👍
This. Good tip. Preferably close to a place selling chips and a beer.

Sorry, they're the Icon. Though I don't think there's a huge difference between the two.
I use KT tape for my baby toes, might be a shout if you don’t wanna try the silicone things 👍
Ah nice, good shout.
Can I put my hand down yet...🥺?
😂😂😂 No.
@@TheRunTesters 😁
You should have said which wave you are in. I'm in the light blue wave. Hopefully I can see you there. Either way, good luck!
I'm not 100% sure yet. Don't have my number. Not panicking about that at all btw. 😂
Perhaps he did that on purpose.
