- Under the guise of a pretty fairy tale, this animated short makes a strong political statement. Animated paper cut-outs enact a drama in which a dictator imposes his delusions on his unfortunate subjects. The humour is black and, despite the absence of dialogue, the message is crystal clear.

I haven't seen this short in years. A good example of satire in a cartoony sense.

Oh I remember this short when I was younger. It kinda traumatized me so badly, I kept my glasses clinged on for shower and bed for a whole week.

since I didn’t find a comment on how they interpreted this story, here’s my take:
a mysterious statue is dropped at the town’s park. it represents a new idea or discovery. the townspeople don’t know much about the statue but they can clearly tell it’s the letter ‘E’.
there’s another man who looks at the statue and perceives it as the letter ‘B’. this man represents people who disregard innovation because they’re blinded by traditional values. the townspeople explain him that it’s not ‘E’ but ‘B’. some get furious and frustrated that this man does not see eye to eye with them. they represent people who try to force new concepts on others and restore to hate if others don’t get it.
but when has hate solved anything? and so comes a woman with her young daughter, who represents the youth. she sees how this man is in dire need of help and finds a new way to aid him. she calls the doctor immediately who represents the path to truth.
the doctor understands that this man just needs some new glasses for him to see the letter ‘E’. this implies that in order to disclose someone the reality, you have to first find what hinders them from seeing it.
after wearing the new glasses, the man also starts seeing the letter ‘E’ and thus the townspeople rejoice in the newfound revelation and unity.
but it doesn’t last long as the king dabbles in the park to impose his own insight. he represents the authoritarian government who sees the letter ‘E’ as ‘B’. the murmurs amongst the townspeople begin but the naive doctor, who found a new way to aid those in the dark approaches the king and respectfully demonstrates him how it’s an ‘E’ and not ‘B’. but every tongue that rises against the king shall fall and thus he orders his henchmen to hit the people on the head for they will only see what the king wants them to see. and they do, chanting that it’s a ‘B’. this reveals how the government exploits their power to brainwash people into believing false ideologies of religion, discrimination, education, caste, race, gender and sexuality.
the short film ‘E’ addresses issues such as political indoctrination, corruption, class system and propaganda in a satirical and simplest way. if you want to explain these complex concepts to someone, make them watch this.

Man, I finally found it! Thanks so much for posting. All I had was my memory as a small child seeing these strange Canadian cartoons and not knowing what they were called or where to find them. Super late nights on Cartoon Network. You rock!

E. is best memorable Animation that I saw from NFB, in 30 years before ! story of this animation is very similar to story of our country IRAN. The story of the rulers who are stupid and ignorant and who want with force their people to follow their ignorance.

I'm impressed with this film from Canada titled "E". From what I can see, most people saw an 'e', but a visual condition made both one man and the king 👑 see a 'b'. Sometimes government wins. I just wish it was in English and not Canadian French. Greetings from the USA!!🌈🦄⭐👑🦊🏆

R Hayat I guess because it’s primarily produced in French, but they didn’t bother of changing the sound of “B” and “E” to an English dub. But the fact that there is no dialogue, and the idea and message is still here, it’s not needed.
