My tip: Do without some things or make do. I mean that lovingly but, we don’t need everything we usually get. So for example you usually eat your bean burgers on buns, either use the bread you already have, eat it without the bun or make some homemade buns. Trust me, these minor inconvenience things wont kill us! 🤷🏼‍♀️

It seems people these days don’t know how to ‘make do’ or do without. It takes some discipline!

There are needs AND then there are wants! I'm old enough to remember when our shopping selections were very limited and I have gone back to more minimal living methods in recent years. Eating out, buying something new or taking in a movie was a special treat to look forward to and to savor.

I live in a little town where you have to go up and down a large hill to get to the city. I learned at a very young age about gauging my speed and being able to coast. It amazes me how many people boar hog up this hill only to be braking the whole way down the other side. I've used this skill for coasting up to red lights too. Save $, save your brakes. Common sense

I ALWAYS combine errand trips. Having lived in the country most of my life, there was no way I would 'run to town' for only one thing. Also, I save gas by ordering online with free or reduced shipping whenever I can. Saves me time, wear and tear on my car and gas money. And no risk of being in or stuck behind, a vehicular accident.

    • @RetiredLovingIt

Get a 4 gal tank car, do all errands together, groceries for 4 weeks, fill tank and park, use car ONLY, to work and go home. That is advice from me. If I have doc app, I try to shop and groceries on same day , keep half a tank always, so that filling up is cheaper, and only use car to work, if the economy collapses because I AM not wasting money shopping?. NOT MY PROBLEM, I have to look out for myself.

🇬🇧 RE: Gliding down hills in Neutral - This is actually illegal in the UK and is called 'Coasting'. If you are seen Coasting, you will be warned/fined. It is a great way to save as you travel down hills but can leave you unprepared if you remain in neutral on the flat or when approaching an accident (this is the reasoning behind the law, potential lack of driver control). Engine resistance while in gear (especially leading to a stall) is considered a safety feature in the UK! Many people still coast of course but once caught, once fined. I love your tips and just wanted to add this information for your UK subscribers! xx

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks so much for the heads up. We would never have considered checking to see if it's illegal in other countries. I agree with you that generally laws are made for specific reasons. It's good to understand the reasoning behind the law.

Since I live out in the country, I look for ways to save not only on gas but groceries too. Our local grocery store will give seniors a 5% discount on Tuesdays and everyone can get reward points on gas {10 cents off for every $100 you spend at the store.} So my grand day out for savings is Tuesday. I get 5% off my groceries and get reward points add for every dollar I spend at the store which goes toward gas. That's my combine discount story.

Some folks I know are not as $conscientious and love any opportunity to leave the house and or shop.. I take advantage of that🤭. Since grocery shopping is not my favorite thing to do I'll ask my neighbors if they don't mind buying some things for me. It works our great for my gas usage, wear of car and my patience😁.
Another few tips: install car window rain guard to get car cooler. It works great for Florida hot weather and leather seats.. ouch!!
For (FWD) front wheel driver cars-Place your purchased items on passenger area and behind seat floor to keep weight down. More weight in the back is less traction for the front wheels and you lose more gas, I have a kia soul with FWD. Lastly, get on your car insurance mileage/safe driver program (if they carry it), You'll be motivated to drive better and less.

My Toyota Camry is a 2020 model. This is the first year they offered the option to roll down your windows as approaching the car. This is huge for me as I live in Florida where it gets HOT! That air escapes as I approach the car and it's easier to cool it down. I already park in the shade when possible and use a sunshade for the windshield but there's no escaping the Florida heat.

I drive my motorcycle in summer to visit friends or to grab 1 thing from the store, saves gas & wear & tear on my car(which is stick). Was surprised as part of 'don't speed' you didn't mention the possibility of speeding tickets, which have cost me a lot over the years. I've definitely noticed some gas stations have better prices consistently so I make sure to go there. Too many people are driving oversized pickups that are obviously not for work as they're never hauling anything, they just like to feel big & important as they literally look down on everyone around them. So much money just for their ego

One tip do errands when you have to be out anyways like I do stops at grocery store on way home from dropping off my youngest at high school.
I also save on gas by ordering stuff from Costco for home delivery every few months, in canada if it's over 75 dollars it's free shipping.
We have Amazon Prime and with that free shipping, if I run out of something instead of driving to the store I first check to see if it's cheaper on Amazon and many times it is.
I also have my dogs pet food shipped straight to the home free of charge ❤
Gas is expensive in Canada, currently 7 dollars a gallon where I live.

@@lmlmlmlm7627 yes I am aware of that, but 1. No overcrowded store to deal with.
      2. No Circling the parking lot to even find a spot.
      3. 15 minutes to get there waste of gas.
      4. Forced to wear a face diaper aka mask while.pushing a heavy cart.
Yeah I will stick with the home delivery.

No name regular gas is now $5.42-5.79 in our area of California. On our state we have winter and summer blend, which is higher. We also know that the more weight in a car, the worse gas milage. We also do as UPS does and plan trips where we have to make few left turns.
Also keeping the car well maintained, tire properly inflated. Our auto coverage is also lower because we maintain the car and keep it clean inside and out.
California has the highest gas taxes. California gas taxes: 51.1 cents per gallon. Federal Excise Tax 18 cents per gallon Low Carbon Gas fee 22 cents per gallon Greenhouse Gas Program 15 cents per gallon. Underground Tank Storage 2 cents per gallon

When I'm on the highway I limit my cruise to 65 mph. I found that most of the semis can't do much more than that and I was constantly having to speed up to get around them and get out of other people's way causing my MPG to go down drastically. So I just set it to 65 and rarely have to speed up for passing.

In Canada gas at Costco is about 9 cents per litre cheaper than anyone else in town. We have a Costco membership anyway for a number of reasons so we got anCostco sponsored credit card (which we pay off immediately) and that gives us an additional 3% cash back on gas purchases at the Costco pump. It comes in the form of a rebate which we can use for groceries or prescriptions in the store. the Costco station is a busy place tho. We usually fill at 6:30am to beat the traffic and avoid idling while we wait our turn.

I drove a cute brick red Ford Escort stick shift for a few years - a cutie pie of a car that I loved. Bought it used from a reliable source. Paid cash for it after saving up for it for two years. But no more sticks for me! My left lower leg became nearly twice the size of my right lower leg! I am a girl and love to wear skirts! Automatic all the way for me after that! I drove it until I had to retire it/junk it, so I got my money's worth out of it, but never again. My left lower leg did become normal size again in time, thank heaven.

I go shopping early and cluster all my errands in the morning, just after rush hour. Even though I live in a rural area, their is less traffic stops and starts between 9 and 10 a.m. weekdays. So I cluster my shopping and errands in that time period. Must less gas usage AND aggravation! By sticking to this method and limiting my trips out to the absolute minimum, I feel I can spend about the same amount on gas as I did previously to the price hike.

I drive a 2015 fiat pop stick shift. I'm so thankful for it with gas prices so high, and it's fun to drive. My husband has a 2005 Toyota tundra which pretty much goes only a few miles a day to work and back. It just cost too much to fill it up right now. They both go around 300 miles on a tank of gas, but the fiat takes 9 gallons to fill up and the Tundra takes 22 gallons to fill up, and I paid $6 a gallon tonight, in California.
You probably mentioned this already but if you didn't, (sorry I lost track with all the great tips) don't let your car get close to empty. We had a very busy week, and let that happen. I could have filled up for $.50 a gallon cheaper if I weren't close to empty and had to fill up on the expensive side of town. I rarely let that happen and will try very hard not to have a repeat. 🤦‍♀️

I have a 2011 Prius and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Trying to get the most MPG is like a game... I know that if I can get close to 50 MPG in the winter and close to 60 MPG in the summer, I'm doing well! I use a lot of these tips as well. One that I would add is to READ your car manual. Prius owners especially- did you know that there is an EV button that will run the car completely from the electricity stored in the battery? This way it won't use gas. It only works at 25 mph, though, and I've found it does better if the weather is 50 degrees Fahrenheit or more. When I'm coming close to my house, the speed limit goes down to 25 anyway, so I know that I can hit that EV button when the speed limit changes and I'll be able to run the car off the electricity until I get to my house (except in winter, of course!). Thanks for the tips, I learned some new ones! :)

I have a 2013 Prius and absolutely grateful with the insane gas prices we are seeing now. My wife hates it whenever she rides with me since I drive as slow and smooth as I can traffic permitting. I'm more conscious with my driving more than ever and gets really good results with my mpg. I purposely drive via residential areas as opposed to main streets utilizing the EV mode as much as I can when going places. On the freeway, I usually stay on the slow lane keeping my speed between 55-60 mph instead of 65. Hypermiling has become a game for me. It's amazing just by observation, how much gas we waste because of poor driving habits.

Sorry I missed the premiere, I picked up some hours at my side job Monday night. In my area, Kroger offers unlimited gas points. I've paid as little as $0.03/gallon before. When I have to pay full price for gas I get cranky now. I've been spoiled. I generally try to only use one tank of gas a month. I live close to both my jobs and to doctor offices and stores.

Hi Hope and Larry. We live in rural Indiana and our closest town is 8 miles away and has very limited shopping, etc. We really need to go about 25 miles to do regular grocery shopping Kroger/Walmart etc. We combine all of our trips now, trying to only go out one day a week. Living on a mini farm we need to have a truck as a second vehicle.. only a 2 wheel drive though to haul our cattle and feed etc. and sometimes we do have to make trips that cannot be combined, etc but we try our best. I have always coasted down hills and one of my previous trucks kept its original brakes until over 100,000. My husband kept telling the dealer I'm sure we need new brakes and they would check them... nope still good. I go very light on the brake pedal and even though I drive an automatic I do shift down into a lower gear to slow down if needed. Great tips.... I have Get Upside and just now applied for the Gas Buddy card and of course I use Kroger Points also. I'm considering doing delivery service but here we have to pay 59.00 (Kroger) 99.00 (Walmart) per year and I'm not sure it would really be worth it. We raise about 80% of our food so my grocery budget is small. I do order non perishable groceries from Walmart (so far free with 35.00 order) and may use this more frequently now. Another thing, since my husband and I are both retired, grocery shopping is one of the few things that gets us out of the house so I'm not sure if we want to give up in person shopping.

I have GasBuddy .. love this App!
When I lived in Chicago, we'd drive to Indiana to hang out and would buy gas before returning home.
I set my Garmin to the fastest route mode. I also use Google at times.

In Australia I use two apps. The first searches their brand of stations within a 5km radius for the cheapest price and then we can lock it in that price for 1 week. The other also shows the local daily price for our region, so I see the rise and fall of the cycle. Our highest to lowest price is about 3 weeks apart. So I fill up petrol cans to store extra fuel at home for the weeks it’s really high. I bought my fuel cans gradually on sale. It’s been helpful for not increasing my petrol budget and will work till the fuel discount our government applied runs out in two months time.

Hi, Hope and Larry. Just wanted to say a few things in case I am unable to watch the "live" video later tonight. First, I have liked having access to the bus to and from work when necessary. I purchase the monthly bus pass, which costs $40. Although this might seem rather pricy up front, it actually does save me money in the long run. With that pass, I am provided access to unlimited rides throughout the entire month, including the weekends. It is imperative to me that, no matter where I am living, I have easy access to alternate forms of transportation. Even when I have owned my own vehicle, it was still nice to have easy and affordable access to public transportation should it be needed.
Second, knowing what the average cost of gas at this time is going to help me decide what percentage of my income to use to start a sinking fund for purchasing and maintaining another vehicle.
#3: I have also had jobs at employers whose location was close enough to where I live that I usually walked to and / or from work. That was very nice, as I was able to get some much-needed exercise! I also live close enough to some grocery stores and other businesses to be able to walk to and from them.

I have been lucky that all of the jobs I have had have been no farther than 20 minutes driving. My current job, is literally five minutes away from me, driving! I’m also fortunate that if anything happened to my car, there’s a bus across the road from me that could drop me right in front of my job. Or, I could walk to work...Two grocery stores are 10 minutes away from me walking, in either direction, as well as a library and two pharmacies!

I was trained to save gas and time. I worked Home Health and had to plan my trip to save gas and time. Usually always had to go to farthest point to start and work way back to office. Sometimes stop on way if early visit needed, but stuck to routine. Traveled with ice chest and ice for ,lab specimens to stay cool. This works if you have to get perishables on a hot day. I even timed my drinking for when I would be near an acceptable rest room. Also gives you an opportunity to scan stations for gasoline prices so you could fill back up on way back at cheapest place, If running late d/t emergencies you would end up closer to home and office so easier to see last client either that eve or in some instances next day. This was so ingrained I cannot break habit of running an efficient route without forgetting items or backtracking.

Timely great tips, thx! $5.50-6/gallon in my area. Just got my first automatic after 35 yrs driving stick, nice to have now for a very long heavy commute (no work at home). Did love the manual though! Would love to take public transit but it takes 1-1.5 hrs. longer in a.m. and 50% longer in p.m. Will check out gas buddy and gas upside. Safeway groceries here cost $1-2 more for each item (vs Walmart) for gas rewards points; so I just shop loss leaders there. Your videos are the best!

Our Hy-Vee store has fuel saver cards and sales that add cents to it for some products. They also put coupons out on some weeks, like 30 cents per gallon for every $60 you spend or varied amounts. We only buy the products we use anyway not just for the fuel cents, but it really adds up. There's no limit on the amount of cents you add on, but there is a limit of 20 gallons. We have actually filled up for free and had some money left on the card for the next time. (not lately, lol) They do expire 30 days from when it adds onto the card, but we keep the vehicles topped off so not a problem. We do two vehicles too, if one doesn't need the 20 gallons. Thank you for all the valuable tips!

Not sure if you mentioned this in the video or not, but I was driving to Peoria this morning (I usually drive at about 60mph an 2000 rpm and get 30+ highway) to do outreach at the Farmer's Market and went out of my way to follow a semi truck that passed me . I turned on my "instant fuel economy" feature and found my instant MPG going up to 40 and more.
I was behind by maybe 5 car lengths. I had heard that there is a vacuum behind a semi on the highway and so that helps you get better gas mileage. When the truck pulled further ahead, my mpg went back down. When I sped up to get closer again, I dound the numbers go up!

My favorite way to save money on gas is by using Meijer rewards while shopping for groceries and other necessities. When enough rewards have been earned I can claim a reward. I can use 10,000 points for $1 off per gallon. My 15 passenger van takes ALMOST 30 gallons and what doesn't fit in the gas tank goes in a gas can. I end up with $30 off each time i fill up at Meijer (the maximum they will allow you to pump). For the same amount of Meijer points I can only earn $10 off purchases in the store. That puts me at $20 better savings using those points at the gas pump instead of in the store.

Also if you are in Alberta and have AMA (CAA) membership you can get 3 cents off a litre at Shell, may not seem like a lot but savings add up. I use recirculated air in the summer once it’s a decent temp. Great tips Hope and Larry. 💕 from 🇨🇦

When arriving at the car park of a large supermarket, think about where you park. Endlessly driving round the car park trying to find a space as near as possible to the shop entrance just wastes expensive fuel. I see folks doing this all the time here in the UK.

We have a Circle K card but we don't load money on it. Just use it at the pump to get 6 cents off. We can also combine our Kroger points at the Circle K's in my area. For every 100 pts at my Kroger I can get an additional 25 cents of at the pump per trip. So last week I had 30 cents credit per gal. plus my 25 cents, plus the 6 cents at circle K - 61 cent per gal discount.

It is interesting how prices and policies vary by location. In my area, Circle K has the highest prices. Sam's is up to 30 cents per gallon cheaper than the Circle K on the same street. My company has a Sam's membership, and I am allowed to use my business card for personal shopping/gas, so I don't have to pay for the membership either.
