    My Husqvarna developed a screeching, near deafening loud sounds that I could sometimes lessen by gently touching the brake pedal. I recorded the horrible sounds, went to and played it for my long time local mower/equipment shop guy. He said “could be this, could be that, it’ll take about a week or more to pull it all apart and get it back to you for a couple hundred but possibly more depending on what I find. I’m retired with a failing fixed income with an ever present subtle fear losing our home of 40 years in the not too distant years. I watched your post, cleaned out the compressed grass and presto, the horrible chattering sound has disappeared. I’m one very, very, very happy old guy. I’ll always look to you first for insights from now on. Thanks for what you bring to our world and I’ll share you freely with all. Butch McGuire at 81.

    If you'll use air hose to blow all the clippings off after every use, including raising the hood, and blowing fan, battery area. Down beside the rear of engine you'll find two openings, one at each corner, there is a round hole, this is the area where you cleaned out. Use air hose to blow down each opening couple times, alternating back and forth, this will prevent that from happening.
    Also try not to wash mower deck when it's just finished mowing, because this tends to kill the bearings in your idler pulleys' and spindles. Even if you wash it after it's cooled down, be sure to run it for few minutes to dry water off everything, are use air hose attachment to blow all pulleys and spindles off. Otherwise water sets on them, and will seep into sealed bearings washing grease out prematurely.
    These few things is what I've learned over the years, from my own mistakes in thinking I was doing the best I could to maintain my mowers. Only to figure out that I was doing more harm, by doing the things I was doing.
    Also on bigger decks, I add another wash attachment connection to the opposite side than the factory installed one, and this makes sure that entire under deck area is washed free of built up clippings.
    Hope this helps you, out, by learning from mistakes, and I made, and learning how to correctly do things, saving lots of headaches, and money needed other places .

      Yes !! I use my leaf blower, or my compressor with an extension on my air nozzle, it's about 16" long and does a GREAT job of keeping everything clean. It's much better for the machine for obvious reasons too ! I wash my tractor regularly just like I wash the cars and truck, I blow dry them too. Well worth the time ! Only takes a few minutes but makes a big difference, especially if/when I do have to work on it !

    Hey buddy...I owe you a beer, or maybe a whole case! I was about ready to put my mower up on a trailer and tow it to a repair shop half an hour away. Problem solved in 5 minutes. BTW, if you lower the mower deck to the lowest position, you don't need to remove it. Also, sticking a long screwdriver down thru those 2 cleanout holes in the frame will enable you to dislodge most of the impacted grass.

    Mine makes noises in the transmission when I’m backing up like something was grinding or slipping or something. I don’t think it’s a belt. It sounds kinda like a clutch or something slipping and grinding. I don’t know what it is can’t get nobody to answer me. And it is a 2011 Husqvarna. YTA 18542

    This solved my problem. I had lost both forward and reverse. I removed the mower blade housing for better access to the nooks and crannies then used my air compressor to blow debris out. To my surprise forward and reverse worked great. Easy and zero cost.

    these huskys are junk! , plastic pulleys, mine throws the belt every second use, reverse doesnt work up the smallest incline. I noticed my neibour under his mower yesterday obviously tossed a belt too. to fix a tossed drive belt you have to remove seat and gas tank which is a beach . grind away some metal to make it easier to remove the gas tank. Stupid design,cheap plastic parts,dont waste your hard earned money on these.

  • @monkeybarmonkeyman

    Treat the machine properly, you avoid these problems. A proper compressed air cleaning after each mow ought to do the trick. I'd also imagine this accumulation would occur from cutting wet or moist grass.
    Can you imagine how many folks trashed their mowers because "the transmission is going or has gone bad" ? I imagine many.

    I always use my leaf blower in my mower before putting it away, so it seemed unlikely that there would be any build up of clippings anywhere. Wrong! When I had the deck off I checked the area shown here and it was packed with debris, enough so it took me awhile to fish it out. Even though I had a new belt ready to install, I didn't need it. Now there is no slipping on hills. Thanks for the explanation and good video!

    THANK YOU!!! I actually pulled the transaxle and changed the oil in my Husqvarna lawn tractor because I was having the same issue and some posts said maybe the transaxle was low on oil or the oil had broken down. Well... it was a little low on oil so I took care of that with the new oil, but after I reassembled everything, the "go" was no better. Then I found your video and Ah Ha! I had the same issue with the clump of dirt and grass keeping the belt from tightening. 30 seconds later my mower drives like new. Thanks for taking the time to post this!

    I just purchased a Husqvarna 138 CT riding mower. The brake both stops the tractor and engages the hydrostatic drive. Two issues: First trying to accelerate [from stop] is jerky and like riding a bronco! Pressing the brake abruptly stops the tractor with excessive force. Driving is terrible; jerking onto motions and lurching to a stop! Second issue is the excessively loud [squealing] sound the belt makes; engaging the drive! Now I have a new tractor that squeaks. bucks and jumps, all for the neighbors to enjoy! Is belting dressing an opinion? Can the belt tension be adjusted to smooth acceleration and reduce squeal?

    • @5MinuteFixit
      @5MinuteFixit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would shy away from belt dressing, from my understanding that should be used when a belt is under constant tension and still slipping. I think the jerky acceleration will slightly soften over time but I have to say even with ~260ish hours on my rider it’s still slightly jerky. Hopefully this helps! Thank you for watching the video and please consider giving the video a thumbs up if you haven’t already! Thank you!

    Man I was about to throw my husq away. 400 hours on this bad boy. 2010 20/42 and it cuts 2 acres weekly. Rebuilt the transmission put a new drive belt on and it ran great. Fast forward 2 months and it doesn’t move again. Jacked it up and saw the drive belt has no tension when the brake is off. Damn it’s a new belt! Checked out your vid and I had to e exact problem major build up of grass. Hard grass clumps. Chipped it all away with a large flat blade and damn if this beast doesn’t now drive like the first day I bought it! Awesome man thanks a lot.

      @@5MinuteFixit I have a 4-year-old Husqvarna YTA22V46 lawn tractor that has given me nothing but fits, especially with the so-called "automatic" transmission. These tractors are poorly designed and lots of debris accumulates in the back of the mower where the pullies for the drive belt and transmission belt are located. To clean, you need to remove the battery and clean with either a hose or compressed air. The tractor is supposed to have a top-end speed of 7.5 mph, but I've been on it when the tractor could only go about 2 mph and would have trouble making it up a slight grade. I'm very disappointed in this lawn tractor and will most likely sell it after this cutting season and buy something else.

    Just replaced drive belt and tractor wouldn’t move.
    Watched your video and knew I had a clump of dried grass exactly where you showed.
    Cleaned it all out (at least an inch thick), runs great now.
    This is my neighbor’s tractor and no maintenance done whatsoever.

    Thank you so much! Had the same problem on a Craftsman mower made by Husqvarna. Changed the transaxle fluid and filter with no effect. Ordered a drive belt, then came across this video while waiting for it to arrive. I always use a leaf blower to clean the deck and mower after mowing, but had no idea that a clump of grass in could stop the machine from climbing a small hill. With the great editing and knowing exactly where to look, I found the clump of grass causing the problem in seconds and now it climbs like a billy goat. Thanks again!

  • @paulvanhouts7291
    @paulvanhouts7291 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it’s annoying that the owner manual doesn’t guide you to this issue. I found out the hard way, new belt and idlers. It is a hard spot to get right into and I think that the manufacturers need to set up a solution in new models. Using a long nose air blower seems a good idea that I Haven’t tried, so thanks for the tip. I may make an adapted tool for this to really get into the tight places. Great vid, thanks
