  • #25. This is my first mistake with the firewood business and its a big one. I said this year was going to be lots of learning and figuring things out on the fly. I set up a new drying yard last winter as I was cutting and stacking firewood to dry for this season. It was all dry by the end of August then the rains came and lots of it. I should have know to cover my firewood by that time of the year. usually by now everything I have cut is safely in the wood shed.

Good to see your checking moisture levels for your customers. I was taught when you check levels it needs to be a fresh split.

Heads up for you. Mice love to build houses in block. When you can turn them on their side. Once you get them they will just keep returning to the sent on the block. Good luck with your drying it’s definitely a process lol

Since I started in the firewood business this is what I learnt…everyone wants dry wood but no-one wants to dry the wood😂 the more wood you sell the less it will be dried😮 the firewood guy’s conundrum!!

If that wood was dry in the middle at the end of August and it's just been rained on. I'd be checking the middle of that wood for your moisture content. That is what really matters. Surface moisture goes up and down, center moisture is what matters. Just my two cents.

I covered it a few weeks ago so I will give it another month and check again.

Nice to see you looking out for your customers, but having said that, I've cut and dried firewood for over 40 years and all we ever did was lay a sheet of roofing tin over our rows of firewood stacks and weight the tin down with wood or concrete to keep it from blowing away. Never had any issues. We do have pipe or cresoted wood under each row to keep the firewood off the ground. My dad was a logger, so he would bring home whole logs for us to cut up for most of my life. You could also leave a little space between rows and it should dry even faster with both ends exposed.

I like the roofing tin idea. I just need to find a good deal on some. I like to let it dry in the sun all summer but will definitely cover it a little sooner next year.

Some customers are way too fussy. For the time and labor it’s not worth it. I’m quickly learning to not deal with them at all.

It’s definitely a lot of time and effort

I'm splitting green hard wood to sell next year, i cover just the top. I sell 800 to a 1000 bundles a year at my house. Hoping to sell small quantities of high quality firewood next year. Not interested in volume sales.

The numbers sound good. I’m doing high quality low volume as well. I don’t have the space for large quantity or the time.

split a piece or two. measure the inside not end grain.

I’m going to check them again in a month. The middles all measured the same as the ends. They should be close in a month or two
