    I purchased a 1/2 cord yesterday.
Was delivered neatly stacked in a full size short bed Dodge 2 rows 16" side to side level to the top edge of bed. A third row was approximately 1/3 the height of the first 2 rows.
It's been years, told him it looked like a 1/4 of a cord and he said "no!", this is a half cord!.
I paid for it, it single stacked just over 3' high x 7 wide with no side supports...tired on the edges.
Yep, after researching...I definitely got RIPPED OFF.
Can't trust people. Bottom side to side width was less than 7' wide, disappointing to say the least.

In ohio there is a law ,firewood is to be sold by the cord or partial cord ,not even e face cord, i see people selling what they call a rick ,i have seen it cut 12 inches and call it a 1/3 cord ,they are ripping off people ,i have also sold wood to people that say that i deliver twice the amount of wood that they used to get ,a cord came in a pickup truck ,i do have a customer that so far he has gotten 14 full cords 128 cf. Im getting the same money for green wood as seasoned ,he wants green wood he keeps a 3 year supply of diffrent aged wood. His dad has also bought 7 full cords and wants more through the winter, plus i sell baged wood i tried plastic streach wrap did not go good so i switched to bags and charge for the bag and sell 20-25 bags a week there are a few plastic wraped left there from last year, ill be bagging those ,thanks for the good info hopely it will educate people so they dont get ripped off, have a great day, enjoy your videos, hope i can meet you at the pb show in october

I dunno. I think its all kinda subjective. I swear i almost got 2 full cords in my truck. With tall racks. Massive rounds. Not in round form, but after split n stacked. 23 feet long by 8 feet tall. Not tight though. Impossible being super knotty pine. So theres a big difference between non split and full rounds when measuring.
The only thing that really matters here is it was free. Minus my back and gas money to get it, but free heat.

hi there i not sure but i don't think in Maryland you can sell wood by the term face cord because that can mean 4x8 any length . 1/3 cord is ok . also do you have that permit you spoke of .i did learn just now of that , thanks john

I find it difficult to understand why wood is sold by volume? All this stacking and measuring is rife with inaccuracies. Every other solid fuel is sold by weight so an accurate BTU count is possible. All wood contains the same BTUs per lb so why not standardize what a cord of "mixed hardwood" weighs and use a simple bucket scale to load the trailer? This way the customer is always getting the BTUs they paid for.

Another student at the Forestry College where I earned my Scalers license asked the Instructor what is a face cord? The Instructor sat down , waited for silence and said,, face cord is only a word invented by dishonest firewood sellers to make customers satisfied with less then they paid for. He suggested that would be a good exam question . This is by far the best video out of many l have seen about firewood, thanks.

HOW TO FIND NUMBER OF CORDS IN ANY SIZE RELATIVELY SQUARE STACK OF FIREWOOD
    Use a calculator.
    1. Measure the stack in inches.
Inches Wide or Deep X Inches Tall or High X Inches Long = a big number.
    Example: 36 in wide X 69 in tall X 156 in long = 387,504 cu inches.
    2. Now divide 387,504 by 1728, (cubic inches in a cubic foot) = 224.25.
    3. Now divide 224.25 by 128, (cubic feet in a cord of wood) = 1.75 cords of firewood.

One of the struggles I have with selling firewood is that I'm honest with my cord, and even give a bit extra. The problem is that I'm competing with people who will deliver what they call a "cord", but is maybe 25% less. They charge less then I could and customers see the lower price of a cord and think they're getting a better deal.

Good video. There is a lot of confusion with people. I’ve sold firewood and I’ve bought it at times too. There are way too many sellers that either don’t know or don’t care what a full cord is. The next biggest topic of confusion caused by bad or unknowing sellers would be what exactly seasoned firewood is.

Enjoy you video, Thank you very much, if no one else has ever mentioned it, have to tell ya. O.k. about the pickup load, I was always told that is a cord. Thanks again, now 40 + 40 = 80 so in my mind that is almost 2/3 of a cord, dear sir? but not half. because 80 + 40 more and your right about at 120 only 8 cubic feet shy of the Ag. If you were to take 16 8ft logs 12 inches diam, stacked 4x4x8 that gives you 128 cubic ft. That is what the log supplier is going to charge you for.
But you now cut it into 16 inch lengths split it and stack it, it does not become 128, more like 110 , if those logs were crooked some short stuff in there, the logs were 16ft long more dead space you are now down to 90 cubic ft of solid wood for a cord 85 to90 cubic ft has been quoted to me by saw mills. So I measured the pile i have measured 10 cord in 16ft lengths.
I measured each end diam. Averaged it ,calculate the cubic ft of that log , then processes it. I use 1/3 cord to a bag, guess what, the calculations worked out to I should get 17 bags from that particular pile of logs, by measurement of raw logs to bags firewood. The loses from raw logs to sold wood can range from 14 to 20 percent. So who is right the logger selling you a cord, the retailer selling a cord, or in my case as in others selling in bulk, measuring the box some do 160 or 180 or any thing in-between . I have come to the conclusion if the customer is happy with the amount of wood he gets for the price he likes, don't cheat him. But also don't cheat yourself, be fair all around.

    • @FirewoodattheFurnace
      @FirewoodattheFurnace  ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed. In Maryland the law reads that it is 128cu. ft of split firewood neatly stacked. So a cord in log form wouldn’t meet that definition in my opinion

I had 4 of my black walnut trees cut down and paid for the logs. I had them leave anything they didnt want, which was alot since they just took the straight long logs. They were cut before they started getting sap. My question is, how long do you have the wood sit for ut to be "seasoned"? I have everything cut up into longer pieces and havent cut down for my wood stove to split yet because i figure keeping them longer for now wont let them get so much moisture from rain.

    • @FirewoodattheFurnace
      @FirewoodattheFurnace  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Black Walnut dries pretty quickly. Get them cut to length, split, and stacked off of the ground. This will allow them to dry more quickly. Some people cover the tops of the stack, but you want the wind to have the ability to move through the pile. Do not cover the entire pile. I personally dont even cover the top unless your planning on burning it right away. The rain will not absorb into the wood and keep it wet. The main reason for covering the top is to keep snow from sitting on it for long periods of time. Black Walnut when split, stacked and exposed to plenty of sun and wind can be ready to go in about 6 months. Hope this helps.

Great vid👍. Here in SW Missouri I deal with the same confusion. The most common term here for a 1/3 of a cord is a “rick”. Most people call and want to order wood by the truckload and then I have to clarify things. I have also noticed that the people who heat with wood and will buy a cord or more they know exactly what they want. It’s the customers who want a rick or 2 for a fire place or a backyard fire pit that aren’t sure. And several times I have showed up to deliver a rick or two and stack it the customers are surprised by how much extra wood is there, which after an explanation of volume means they were cheated in the past. Keep up the good work Brad😆

Thank you! Very informative and well explained. This video should be required training for all new firewood sellers. Many people in my area try to claim a level truck bed as a full cord, and unfortunately also price it as that. Often it will even actually be a loosely thrown in, level truck bed, claimed as a full cord!

Really good explanation Brad. A lot of people don’t have a clue about what a cord is. I can’t believe you need to have a permit to sell firewood. Just another revenue stream for the government, smh. I left upstate NY and moved south 42 years ago. I was glad to get away from a lot of that government control. Unfortunately I think it’s creeping towards NC.

I've already used your video to make racks with pallets. Can get twice as much wood stacked for about 1/4 of the price (when comparing it to the metal racks I've bought on Amazon). I'm also going to build a bundle making frame soon from your other video I've taken notes on. You help out your viewers more than you know! Btw, congrats on the 5k subscribers! 🙂

Excellent info. There’s so much confusion and misinformation on this topic. I too have heard people say that a full cord can fit in a pickup truck. I always say, “my truck is an F350 with an 8 foot bed. I can’t fit a cord in my truck.”

  • @PaulHodgson-gm6lg

So it should scale, 158 cu.ft. to allow for air gap in the stack. Further, look at the back of my 79 F250, 8 ft long, 6'8" wide, stacked to the top of the cab, even allowing for wheel wells, is more than a cord

I would say 8 out 10 of new customers for 1/3 cord are blown away with the amount of wood they receive for their money and it was exactly what they had coming to them. They have bought these loosely thrown in, 6 foot truck bed loads for so long. They have forgotten what an actual 1/3 cord is!
Nice job on the video and all the other cute names of measurement given by the Joe's of the world, are NOT helping the industry at all...

Good to see this. However, I live in the UK. We don't have measurements like that here. A cord of firewood there is like a pint of beer here. Glass full, if not it is not a full pint. Here firewood is by the dump trailer or the builders bag. £70 for a builders bag of ash. In all honesty, 2 builders bags don't evaluate to even a full face cord. I try to cut and split my own firewood, but when I need to buy, I look at USA and realize how much more you get there for your money. What do you charge for a full cord? I have a friend who has a wood burner who simply buys wood from the supermarket. He has gas central heating in the house also. He likes to keep the wood fire going through winter because he likes the heat better than from the radiators. Just burning 3-4 hours every evening. He told me he has spent £2000 on kiln dried firewood this year! Plus kindling! I was shocked. A small amount of searching, chainsaw bucking and splitting only takes a few days a year for me, and sometimes I buy a bit, like £200 for 2 or 3 builders bags to help fill my woodstore, but spending so much on a small amount of firewood seems unproductive.

Nice to meet you, Brad. I'm new to your channel and appreciate a honest person when it comes to firewood sales. My wife and I are both 67 and cut, split and stack our own firewood, a great team. We mostly get logs that I haul home on my 5x10' trailer, pulled behind my 2001 Grand Cherokee and some rounds from our local Fire Chief that's clearing a large area of his property that has a lot of dead Ash trees. Keeps us busy and in some sort of shape and beats paying those high utility bills. Again, great to meet you and discover a great channel.

Thanks for this video Brad. I almost didn't click on it because I know what a cord is, and I know what a face cord is. Of course, that was before I watched your video and found out I have been wrong for 20 years. I was sure that a face cord was 1/2 of a cord. So all these years I have been getting a cord delivered and thought the guys was being generous because after filling 2 face cord holders, I always had some extra. Ha Ha, joke was on me.
I am about to order firewood and have called around to get prices here in Northern New Jersey. You mention in your video that you like the chance to educate your customers and try not to embarrass them. I think I will have to make sure whoever I get the wood from is educated and will try not to embarrass them! You have a great style and I appreciate the content. Subscribed.

I do not cover them anymore. I used to but had a lot of trouble keeping the covers on in the wind. If I were selling the wood through the winter I would cover the tops but I’m always sold out before the snow flies. I don’t think it’s necessary to cover it when your not planning to burn it anytime soon
