I live nearby and was there Sunday. It was the nicest Rhinebeck in recent years to me. Hadn't been since 2019. That year it was so crowded ( Saturday) I doubted I'd go back. Sunday is my day now. Much calmer.

Loved the leaping llamas! Your video showed a much nicer experience than I've heard of festivals. I get easily overwhelmed in huge/claustrophobic crowds.

Another thing people could consider is checking out their local fiber festivals if they live elsewhere. Here in Oregon we had Oregon Flock and Fiber last weekend. It's a much smaller event than Rhinebeck, which can be seen as a positive if you prefer a more relaxed shopping experience. They also have very well priced classes. I learned to use a drop spindle! Anyway just thought I'd mention that for everyone with FOMO! Still definitely enjoy seeing everyone's videos from the BIG event.

@rockstarkate78 I am jealous. I wanted to go to that one in Oregon but missed out. I also missed out on the one in Seattle. But... I did grab a ticket to Sacred Sheep in Portland in November. Can't wait.

I agree with this recommendation. I'm not sure how Rhinebeck got the foothold as THE ultimate fiber festival but most counties or states have their own festivals (or county fairs that have a section for fiber) This was my first time going to Rhinebeck but it was a long drive and very crowded and they had many of the same things our states fiber festival have. I felt the marketing pressure of the TH-cam community to go. It was nice but I can have a similar experience closer to home. Maybe the main difference is the chance to meet TH-camrs here.

I was there on Saturday for the first time since 2019. I also came away empty handed because at this point I have just about anything I could ever need. I go for the animals and the camaraderie. When I first started going in the late 1990s, it was only in the 4H barns up top with a Gem Show taking place in the buildings by the food places. Needless to say the focus has changed a lot over the years. Still as nice, just very different. And a whole lot more crowded! :D

I was there Saturday for the fourth time. I loved it as much this year as I did my first time. It is overwhelming and if you are prone to ADD, it can be all consuming. The thing I loved was the blanket of kindness over the crowd. Fiber peeps are gentle souls and that makes the experience so good. I wish I had seen you. You looked beautiful. I bet your boyfriend felt honored following and filming. I hope I see you next year. Try a Saturday. You will be amazed at how many people will flock to you. Your podcast is lovely. Glad I found you.

Bummed I missed you on Sunday. I live about 1 hr away so we have gone for the last few years. I loved it even in the rain. Saturday is crazy busy so if you have anxiety (I do) it’s a lot of stimulation. Sunday is definitely the easier day for shopping. Great video and you have to watch the animal obstacle course next time you go, it’s so cute. The goats were eating the sticks they were supposed to jump over. Lol

I've never been. Friday I did attend my first Fiber Fest, which compares in NO way. Two past vendors I hoped to see went to Rhinebeck this year. The sheep and alpaca didn't come til Saturday. The only food truck got a flat tire on its way. I have to say....none of this was the fault of the organizers. I will attempt to come on Saturday next year. I did get wool soap and...a skein of yarn from a friend who has beautiful yarn.

Thank you, Nora, for making this video! I love the way it was filmed and edited so that I felt like I was right there with you and following you around. It's truly my favorite Rhinebeck video thus far. You experienced (and helped me to also experience) Rhinebeck like I would want to, which is more like my county fair and less like 'see and be seen'. I love that you said hello and gave love to all of the animals. That's what I do at our fair. I drag my hubby through every single livestock barn at ours. I don't know if I'll ever want to spend the money to go to Rhinebeck (expensive when you're traveling from upper left USA), but this video layed it out better for me than the 'who's who' videos you generally see posted. It's given me less anxiety about attending my first festival coming up soon in November in Portland, Oregon. 🙃

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  ปีที่แล้ว +2

This comment seriously means so much to me. This was exactly the feeling I wanted to evoke. County fair is exactly the way I'd describe it--fried dough and all! 😋 I'm just happy to see the animals and smell the yummy food! Thanks so much for watching and I hope that you enjoy your festival! Thank you so much! In regard to the vendors, I have been reading up on everyone’s experience from the Friday night event at Wool & Folk. I haven’t seen anything from vendors at NY Sheep and Wool, but I hope it wasn’t more of the same. The good news is that most of them are now putting their inventory online which will be great for those who were unable to attend. Definitely a disheartening experience all around though!

Looks like loads of fun but, way to expensive for my budget. I did the NYC Yarn Crawl September 28th to October 1st. I got two skeins of "Sea Change Fibers' at Brooklyn General Store, they were giving 20% off. Then I went to Argyle, and bought three skeins of "Hedgehog Fibers" from Ireland, in the color Crush. I also got more of their "Luminous Brooklyn" in color Shock Value. They offered 10% off. The last day of the crawl I went to Kitty City on the Upper West Side. They had the Artist who makes "Yarn Over New York" there with some of her hand dyed yarns. She was so sweet, and we had a great conversation as we are both Artists. I bought one of her skeins of fingering weight yarn to double strand to make a hat. I thought 35 dollars a skein for the Irish yarn was enough, but, I noticed on some of the Rhinebeck videos, yarn that was over $45. I live in Yonkers on the border of the Bronx, so easy for me to take subway down for Crawl. I'd have to take Amtrak to go the Rhinebeck there and back. Plus no shuttle bus to fair grounds, which I think they should have. You really need someone with a car to drive you there.

Rhinebeck was crazy this year. I went Saturday and even though the weather wasn't great the crowds were outrageous, in a good way :) It's amazing being around all fiber folks! I just find myself thinking that all these people and I have this common element that sparks us joy! It's funny, my husband loves going too. I don't think he can quite put his finger on it, but for some reason the whole experience is enjoyable for him as well. I also am a bargain hunter, and I found a few great deals. They can be found if you scour! ha! I also live in CT. so it's nice to be able to take a couple hour drive in the peak of a New England autumn, loving the colors and countryside and end up at a fiber festival! Doesn't get much better that that. :) You may already be aware, but there is also the New England Fiber Festival at the Big E fairgrounds the first weekend of November, I believe. It is much smaller, not nearly as overwhelming, and sooo enjoyable. Maybe you will find a boyfriend worthy hat yarn there! Knit on!

I live 30 minutes from Rhinebeck and I go every year. This year was the first year we went on Sunday. Sunday is a day where you can spend more time with the vendors. Saturday is a day for the Knitting Designers. Last year on Saturday there was over 45,000.00 attendees and it was uncomfortable. Last year we did the auction on Saturday which is a real experience. There are two other fiber festivals which take place on Friday and Saturday in the adjoining towns. If you plan on coming and staying the weekend, you need to make your hotel reservations now or you will not get one. Rhinebeck has a beautiful downtown village feel.

Thank you so much! You know what, I have no idea. I feel like you do often see goats in habitats with a little obstacle course, so it must be some sort of enrichment activity for them! We just saw llamas and goats (and humans 😂)

Thank you so much for this video, Nora! I’m in Missouri and I have never been to rhinebeck before and not likely to anytime soon. Seeing it through your eyes just totally made my day!! I love how excited you are just to be there, I feel like that would exactly be me too. And I loved seeing the leaping llamas (so freaking cute!!) and listening to you narrate - I giggled at you and the llamas haha 😂 Anyhow, thank you for your fun and enthusiasm and sharing it with others. Can’t wait to see more from you. Have a great week!

Lol. You are still trying to figure out if you like that sheepy scent. I thought I liked it, and on the skeins, I do, but I was at Woolstock (Paris, Ontario, Canada) and was wearing a wool mini shawl around my neck. I got a bit hot and sweaty and the steam or humidity maybe, that I produced, mixed with the sheep smell, and I thought to myself, "What is that awful smell?" It turned out to be my shawl.😅 It was like sticking my nose right into the side of a sheep on a hot day. It was bit overwhelming.

Sunday was busier than Sundays past, I think because the weather was so bad on Saturday.

Hey Nora. What a great recap! I have been going for over 20 years and still get overwhelmed. I usually go on Sat. This year went on Sunday. I check the vendors list ahead of time and made a list of who I want to checkout and also of what I was looking for. I ended up with a Shetland fleece to spin. So excited. Also I did see you. I was walking down from the apple booth ( donuts, cider ,etc ) and you were walking up that way. I looked up and saw you and I wish I could have stopped and said hello but my husband needed to go sit down. Glad you had a great experience 😊

I am so glad I am not the only one! I imagine it is that much more exciting event when spinning is on the table-perhaps next year! I am sorry I missed you but I am glad you got some goodies! 💛

Near the beginning you stopped at a booth with 2 sweaters haning on the wall. You picked one up and read the tag. It was a beautiful white v-necked cable number with blue colourwork around the neck. I am in Western Canada 🇨🇦 and will probably never get to NY Sheep & Wool. By chance did you get the name of the pattern? Thanks Kindly!

I believe that it is the Elena by Junko Okamoto-it’s been in my favorites for a little bit and I recognized it right away. Beautiful sweater!

@@akaNoraKnits NE is actually my favorite!! All indoors. Wide aisles. It has grown over the years, so does get busy, but is a great festival. We usually add in a side trip to Webs afterwards; it makes for a great day trip!!
