    ABOUT NEW AMSTERDAM
Inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, this unique medical drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital - the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof - and return it to the glory that put it on the map.

WORD. TRUTH. PLAIN-AS-DAY FACT. Oh, Max is going back to denying it to himself, but Helen KNOWS. It's almost funny: Max puts his life at risk by NOT seeking regular cancer treatment, and he justifies this by seeking out Helen's "help" and "advice," which is really just Max going oogly googly over Helen. Yeah, well, Helen KNOWS exactly what's going on: she just crooked her finger, "Follow me, Max," and led Dr. Max Puppy Dawg straight down the hallway straight to the LAST person he wanted to see, his new tough-as-nails, cancer specialist, Dr. Blue Meanie.
All the while he was being led, Dr. Max Puppy Dawg Woof Woof was riffing all kinds of "ya gotta-help-me-brilliant-Dr. Helen" BEE ESS, all the way down the hallway, oblivious to where Helen was leading him.Why would he care? He was with Helen, and the rest just fades to the background like it ALWAYS does when he's with her.
Yeah. Helen NAILED IT. Got Max right to Dr. Blue Meanie for proper treatment AND confirmed, yet again, that for Dr. Max Puppy Dawg Woof Woof, it begins, goes, and ends all around Helen. And that smile on Helen's face? She's happy with that, big time.

I like the scene where Max is getting ready for chemo and Helen knocks on the door cause he was so scared and upset try to keep a straight face til she came in and made his day he didn't have to go thru it by himself because they really take care of their own Max & Helen when he reached out for her hands it was so uplifting to have her by his side as he went thru this ordeal help relieve anxiety. Love them both so loving and caring!!!!

This episode had so many dynamic parts with feelings from the beginning to the end. As a retired veteran what touched me was when the veteran that had the stroke could not be taken care of by the VA Hospital completely. Max's action and attitude was with heart. He jumped in and wanted to take care of this veteran whatever it's going to take. I took this very personal. We need doctors like Max. This episode was just phenomenal.

Agree with you 100% this episode had everything. Yes it was full of emotions and information from beginning to end especially when they talked about the circumstances of being a veteran as it relates to non Medical Care. The scenes where the officer was so well-loved and well-respected by her peers especially her partner. Two different groups and yet their job descriptions were the same Serve and Protect. Judith Hall thank you for your service!

@Judith Hall, thank you for your service. My stepdad was a 30 year army veteran. He passed away from cancer (Agent orange exposure). He was out of the service for 10 years when he passed away. So, they said it was not service related. My nephew is in the Army (20 years) still active service, stationed in North Carolina.

THAT SCENE BETWEEN MAX AND HELEN. IT'S EVERYTHING. Let me just go on a tangent and say the writers have been purposefully writing all of their scenes like -- subtext and all -- since the pilot. They have purposely made Max and Helen each other's persons. They are vulnerable in a way with each other that they aren't with anyone else. They confide in each other. They support each other. They challenge each other. There have been romantic undertones in their interactions since day one. Anyone who hadn't noticed or wants to act brand new about their potential romantic relationship had to be falling asleep during all of their scenes. The groundwork has always been there. Lastly, Max's face immeditaely lights up when Helen walks in. He needed her there. And she was, time and time again. The looks between them and the hand holding? MY GOODNESS. Forever rooting for them.

Well, yeah, things always change for Max when Helen "walks in." It's been this way from the very moment Helen and Max met. Our boy Max is madly in love with Helen and she's in deep for him, too, so we can't be too surprised.
I mean, consider this very episode: even in the wake of Helen "putting distance" between herself and Max because "everybody wants him" (meaning, his wife Georgina wants him), Max STILL goes googly oogly over Helen: CASE IN POINT--Max literally puts his life at risk by not getting regular cancer treatment, using his avoidance as the reason to flirt, woo, go googly over Helen via seeking her "help" and "friend's advice." YEAH. RIIIIIGHT.
And don't tell me Helen doesn't know it. She literally herded googly Max to the LAST person he wanted to see--his mean, tough-as-nails new doctor. All Helen had to do was point, "follow me," LITERALLY, and Dr. Max Puppy Dawg went along, woof, woof, right to Dr. Doom's office.
Note to Max: Dude. You're still gonna deny it? REALLY? Helen KNOWS, dude. The entire Planet knows. Thank your stars that Dr. Reynolds is too busy saving patients to call you out: "WTF? THE BOTH OF YOU GET A ROOM ALREADY. WE GOT PATIENTS TO SAVE..."

      @martiniquemarchande7027 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@Charlie-rb7to : Couldn't DISAGREE more. With all due respect, you've reversed the actual situation: Max loves his wife.
But he is IN love with Helen.
The intense eye-to-eye gazes, the way Max and Helen move To and From each other even in the most public of spaces conveys a deep, intense intimacy.
The narrative arc refutes you as well: last week, Max's wife was literally and metaphorically asleep to Max's crisis (his advancing cancer). With his own mortality looming, Max lost all control, lashing out at his trusted friend, the brilliant Dr. Reynolds.
Nobody could formulate a plan or figure out what to do.
Helen did. She broke her "break-up" with Max, returning as his "doctor" (in reality, reaffirming their unspoken love bond): suddenly, Max returns to Clarity...Connection...and...Courage.
      Solely Helen could do this.
In last night's episode, Helen's lover effectively broke-off his relationship with Helen, as she chose to stay, intervene, and take over Max's care.
But this same boyfriend has long noted , envied, and had deep jealousy over Max and Helen's "vibe."
The narrative arc--Max's wife's almost total absence versus Max and Helen's intense, spiritual AND erotically charged connection--practically spell out to any discerning viewer that this is a love affair.
Literary and film buffs will recognize the classic LOVE TRIANGLE structure--Trifrom the Medieval Tristan and Isolde to Fitz and Olivia--in which two fated lovers are married/betrothed to someone else, but the two fated lovers can never be IN LOVE with anybody else.
The two actors playing Max and Helen have phenomenal, charged chemistry, which lends utter and compelling power to the clear LOVE TRIANGLE trope that is the centre of of this show.
Without the intense but denied love between Max and Helen, there is no show. All of the other great actors and characters--and the ensemble is great, particularly the Kapoor, Izzy, and the other charismatic, sexy couple, Dr, Franklin and Evie --would be lost in space.
But the passionate, barely veiled romantic love between Helen and Max provide the center of New Amsterdam solar system, around which the great ensemble cast orbits like other-wordly planets.
There is a reason why New Amsterdam fans almost unanimously "ship" Helen and Max: the chemistry, the narrative arc, the Love Triangle are so compelling.
And in the end, it comes down to Max and Helen. When they are on screen together, that "vibe," Love Supreme, is Everything. Everything.

Helen made the right choice to get Max a new doctor and focus on being his supportive friend. It is what Max truly needs now as he will not let his wife be there for the treatments.

The writing is so intense and we get so drawn into the character's within the story lines. I saw the previews for next week as well. One of the captions read something about Maxx making enemies. I think this is where his illness is going to play a major part in his emotions. Can't wait to see the next episode.

I was a music therapy major so I notice music right away and draw my emotions from it accordingly a lot of the time. Obviously it didn’t work in this case! Lol I heard upbeat, happy music and thought “ok she’s going to live because the music is happy!”. Definitely an interesting choice by the writers.

Someone needs to hire a surgical consult with the people showing this series! I'm a retired surgical nurse and found several breaks in technique in the O.R.! As one example, Max would not be sitting up in bed getting ready to have his feeding tube put in with his hands on the outside of the sterile drape -his arms would be underneath the cover and he would be laying flat. As another example I have yet to work in an operating room, and I worked in several, where while they are scrubbing their hands their mask is off their face with the ties hanging down while they are scrubbing their hands - they always put their mask on first and then scrub their hands. I could give more examples but I think two is enough for now. I hope someone will pass this on to the ones writing the scripts or the ones running the camera.

Bloom and Reynolds were way better together. This new black girl seems like a career-driven selfish person who only puts her self first.
