I just found your page! With over 40 years of exploring caves and my grand dad and dad were miners. Holes in the ground has always called me to explore. Now at almost 72 you bring the adventure to me. Thanks buddy I really appreciate what your doing! I'm sure I will watch all the back episodes and eagerly await the next hole.. Please do one thing for me. If you see bats please keep the light off of them. 1 or 2 degrees temperature difference does disturb their hibernation. Other then that buddy I wish I could follow you into the deepest, twistest and longest trek you ever do. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for your videos.

"Gly": Thanks! And welcome aboard! I've been exploring these places since the 80's and now that I'm retired I can do it full time and bring it to the world. My lights are all LED so they emit little to no heat at all except for right at the bulb. But your right, best to leave hibernating bats alone. I was pretty out of shape when I recorded my earlier stuff but nearly one year later I'm doing much better. Glad your enjoying the show! I'll do my best to bring to you some really cool locations. Take care!

Gee Gly, you sure like driving us around to see these places, a fun ride. Thanks Gly for paying attention to details, brick and mortar type of guy. Thanks for the build up, showing us the small stuff first, now down to the best you offer, the deeper we go. Viewing this video, feel like i'm hunched over. Don't feel hunched over in the Incline, higher back of the mine. Nice tour of that Incline. OK, lets add an Adit. OK Gly lead on. Nice tour. I'm amazed, you put so much into each video, it keeps on given and keeps pulling us on with you. Looking for more adventure with you and your friends.

Have been going back and taking a re-look at your earlier videos. These were two great mines that you found. Really a "study' for all of us to see. In #1 decline adet, did they get the rock material out by track going up the incline? or some kind of a pulley system? Adet #2; I still like that anacronym about barbed wire across a adet opening is actually like a "velvet rope" to "come across and in". ha,ha. I bought one of your T-shirts with that saying on it. And with this video you're reaching to get to 1,000 subscribers and now you are way over 100,000!!! All because you "pack" a entertaining show. Thanks for all of them.

Inclined shafts are my favorite places to explore because there not vertical and they look better on camera than a traditional horizontal hard rock haulage adit. That inclined shaft was the land of drifts and stopes! Really cool. That must have been a heck of a climb out of there. I'm guessing the Hercules powder company is the same one that still makes powder for reloading firearm cartridges. I've used their powder for reloading. Pretty cool. That area where you crawled under the ore shoot was very, very cool! Every episode makes me more and more amazed at how hard those miners worked. Mining ain't no joke!

Lots of history here also but without the pumps running, most are flooded now. “Gly”: Hi Dave, and thanks for coming aboard! As this channel grows I may do just that. I’m thinking of fabricating a gantry off of my front bumper that will allow me to be lowered into vertical shafts via a winch with a 700 foot nylon winch cable. I’ve had this idea for quite some time now and I’m working on a collapsible system that’s lightweight and portable. Many of the locations I’ve found are vertical shafts with no man ways so such a system would be ideal for this type of exploring.

So, "barbed wire fences are the velvet rope to adventure," eh? That's a quote for the ages! It would be a good epitaph! Maybe Desert Rat has a better eye than me, but it seems like the old timers left a lot of ore in these mines. The numbered tag @1:03:18 means somebody looked at that mine. The quartz vein @ 51:09 looks promising but, what really surprises me is the stoped out areas along the sides of the incline shaft. They all seem to have ore left in them. Above all, the vein @ 1:00:05 is awesome looking! Were you tempted to carry out a chunk of the ore in that bin @ 36:10? My hat is off to you about one thing. It took some big brass ones to go under that ore bin @ 53:48! The room you found on the other side was worth it, though. Very cool! Thanks for a great video, Gly!

“Gly”: Yeah, I just had to see what was on the other side of that ore bin. Curiosity might kill cats but not mine explorers. Lol. Your right! That would make a good epitaph! Backfilled drifts will most always have a little bit of space between the backfill material and the back of the mine because of settling.

I can't reach out to you any other way so I will use it.
I have located a mine in Trinity county that quite possibly is the infamous "Double Cabin Mine" I need help getting there and after 30 yrs. of researching I'm ready to go. But only with trust worthy partners. You are very respectful of the mines you research and that's what I need. Though this isn't a tunnel mine but the surrounding area is really historically significant.
I'm inviting you and your partner to do the trek with me.
If you're interested Google the Double Cabin Mine in the San Francisco Chronicle and read up. Besides that there is another place that was somewhat of a town but complete lawlessnes was it's demise. The mining community of Mary Blaine was quite remote for the time and had so many murders that the military got tired of constantly going in to investigate another murder that they finally went in and closed it down for good. That would be alot of fun to explore. There are hundreds of caves throughout the Trinity Alps Wilderness many of which did become mines. It all sounds exciting to me and summers right around the corner. If you're interested at all get back to me and we'll go from there.
Isn't this fun. I love guys and hope you'll join me.
    Thanks for all the videos.

“Gly”: More modern prospectors and geologists have gone into these old mines to assay their values leaving behind those markers. The early 80’s also saw a resurgence in prospecting because of the dramatic increase in gold prices during that time.

Suggestion Gly , get yourself several 100 ft. hanks of inexpensive kernmantle rope to use as a "hand line" when going down those decline shafts . Have you had any luck with a brand of gas detector? I bought one another mine explorer used and it croaked in less than a year. For those shafts in sunlight...take a small mirror and reflect the sunlight down in the hole. I've mentioned that before on at least one other channel. I used it when we would go ridge walking for new caves in the winter. It's a trick I learned from an old well driller in my early teens.

Thank you Gly. How are they moved today ? Also I recall you saying in an earlier episode that when blasting, the mine has to be completely evacuated first. So I am guessing the dynamite fuse is ignited by electric current? I can’t see the miners trusting good old match lit fuses to stay lit when traveling several hundred feet to the blasting cap and dynamite

I want to add that I’m enjoying these episodes. It’s fascinating to say the least. I agree with your sentiment about trying to keep certain addit / portals from going public. There are too many less than intelligent people in society who will be stupid enough to go into a mine completely unprepared for potential consequences and get into serious trouble or killed. Thank You for sharing your experiences it’s fun to watch. Be careful out there .

GLY: Notice all of those skinny wooden poles or 2 X 4's are on the same side of the tunnel. I do not see on the back any wires or holes for pegs, so I am thinking those skinny poles were for air compressor pipes and fresh air ducts. What do you think?
-A Model A or T both had the gas tank in the body cowl. The 1932 up had the tank there on the tail end. But the 1932 and up had free standing headlights not on the fender brace bar. Making that a Chevy or a Dodge.

So I really don't get how miners back in the early 1900's were digging, or blowing out, these incline shafts. Could you please explain? It looks like they take a certain angle, how is that possible? Once they're at 400-500 feet deep, how the hell do they tnt it? Do you use extra long fuses to compensate climbing out or do the use the mine carts??? Did the miners back then work with candles to make sure the air was ok??

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

“Gly”: When dropping in a shaft inclined shaft the miners would follow the angle of the surrounding rock strata. This made for much easier rock removal and made for a more stable shaft. Miners did blasts between shifts when everyone was out of the mine. These mines had forced air ventilation so bad air usually wasn’t an issue.
