Liam, you got a VBOX, we get acceleration times! Yaye, nice addition, thank you! Special request, any chance of also adding in 80-120km/h over taking times while you're at it from now on? That's going to cover more bases, eliminates differences with cars that struggle to get off the line, manual/auto etc. For what it's worth, my 370Z takes 3.0 sec (that's from a steady 80 not flying through 80) in 3rd, and my Supra used to take 3.2 sec in 4th (as an indication of its torque).
Considering he's from New Zealand where our national speed limit is 100kph. And anything over that is considered terribly dangerous and detrimental to society, probably not. But I see your point.
@zyoungson215 Indeed Liam has driven 2 of my cars and for the record if the authorities are reading this, he never goes over 100km/h, and naturally I was referring to private roads for any 80-120km/h testing!
Yeah sorry can't do 80-120, I already push the limits a bit in my videos, but blatantly showing the speedo is just a recipe to get raided by the cops haha

BTW, for a ZN6/ZC6 to be "drivable" in the track, I spend around 13k upgraded the wheels, suspension, brake kit, final drive, high flow header, tuned etc. But for DC5R, just need a set of racing pad and a set of semi slicks.
Another great video. I've driven the 86 and BRZ back to back and I found the 86 was more fun with more rear biased handling. The BRZ slightly less pointy, more understeery, safer feeling. Both had similar performance.
Nice comparison! I used to own a 2013 BRZ manual. I miss aspects of that car. One thing I have been told is you can tune the torque dip out and improve the sound with unequal length headers. You really can’t beat those Honda engines and their gearboxes are just sublime.
Maybe try a GT86 or BRZ with unequal-length(UEL) headers. It seems like a minor change, but it helps with the mid-range torque, and it gives you that classic Subaru rumble.
@KiwiCarLife Yeah, they should have come from the factory with UEL headers. They trade some potential peak power for better mid-range. They worked to fix the torque dip with the new 2.4 GR86.

If you bought an 86 you’d still be happy, they are fun. But the Integra is just better imo. That said, you’ll have a much easier time finding a decent 86
@@KiwiCarLife I agree, they're very fun and as you said, I wanna play my tunes too 🤣 Also, do you think the 86 will get me in less trouble than the integra since its slower? I also think the 86's speed is ideal for Auckland since the highway is always filled with cars at all times so there isnt much top speed to squeeze out of it! 😆
The Honda has a great engine for sure. The GT86 FA20 really is lackluster, thankfully they have worked on it for the GR generation and the engine is a lot better, hopefully you can try it out and make another video.
Glad you done this comparison. Owning a dc5 type s I have been contemplating getting an 86 just purely for the RWD experience, but that’s legit it. After knowing people who own an 86 the integra kills the 86 as a daily and as for the driving experience, a light, nimble, VTEC screaming Honda. I don’t see the worth in trading them over. The boot space is crazy in the integra vs the 86, the drivers experience is so fun, and who wants a Boxster over a K series at the end of the day 😂 The only thing that would complete the dc5 is the LSD, but if you can control your throttle around corners it won’t be a concern at all.
Owner of a 2004 AUDM Type R. In Oz they came with a helical LSD and Recaros. The gearbox has triple cone synchros on first and second and double cone synchros on the remaining four gears. Bought it new and cross shopped it with a WRX. While the WRX was undoubtedly faster both in a straight line and around corners thanks to 4wd and a turbo it just did not feel special. The interior was nasty soft plastic that had been improved with a Momo and leather gearknob and some sporty looking seats that were nowhere near as good as the DC5's Recaro's. Funnily enough with the LSD the FWD DC5 had less oversteer than the WRX and the gearbox not only felt better but was better geared. Driving the Subaru felt like it was a boring family car with a nice steering wheel and a turbo while riving the Honda felt special. When the BRZ came out I sat in one of the first ones available and much like the WRX before it, it just felt cheap and nasty on the interior. Everything felt poorly made and like it would start wearing quickly. I quickly decided that I didn't want to sell the Honda. With 300,000 kms on the clock and numerous track days and hard but not abusive driving, the Honda is still going strong. One alternator, one strut, a couple of clutches and lots of tyres and brake pads I have never regretted the decision. It is a really well engineered car that is still a pleasure to drive and its relative low power is a bonus as you can have fun in it without risking your licence. I would highly recommend a DC5 Typre R or S if you can get your hands on one that is good condition, has had few owners and has a perfect service history. If the previous owner has not cut corners it will not let you down. However, Honda parts only come in two categories expensive and really expensive so do not buy one where the previous owner has cut corners as the repair bills for someone else's mistakes will hit your wallet hard.
Interesting OK so seems like the Aussie Type R/Type S has LSD, but NZ market didn't. And wow 300,000km! Yeah honestly I think you made the right choice. The BRZ was great compared with the competition at the time like the MX5, but if you were coming out of an older VTEC Honda or even Celica it would just feel cheap and not thaaat great to drive
prefacelift rsx s also have same engine as nz/audm pre facelift dc5 type r which is k20a2. but chassis and suspension is bit different. While facelift nz/audm type s basically just facelift rsx s with rhd layout.
Thing is though, the Honda needs to be revved, and yet it's absolutely fantastic. I agree, it was the first performance Toyota that didn't use a Yamaha tuned engine, and as a result it's just kinda rubbish. Driving experience is brilliant, but it neeeeeeds a different engine. Agree a "modern" 3S-GE would have been perfect. If they put a WRX engine in, it would have been kinda the same. Bit boring and lackluster, and then it would have been a kinda midrangey with not much top end. Keeping it N/A was the right choice, and it's not necessarily the peak numbers that's the issue, it's just the engine experience as a whole
This is the truth in terms of fun factor. I bought a zc32s SSS and it’s as fun as, if not more, than my Megane RS, which was up until the Swift, the most fun car I’ve owned. And the Swift, if driven well, can keep with anything along twisty sections of the Kawakawa loop, or the infield section at Hampton Downs.
I would take the honda anyday. Also if you want to turbo it, it will be way ahead of the 86 brz. Just the 86 brz is rear drive and also looks great and also alot newer...... The integra chassis has been proven to be one of the best FWD chassis back in the day. And boxer engines are just shit, mainly because of unreliabiliyty and being subaru.... but they can be made better of course
If you've got the money to turbo a K20, you've got the money to install an LSD haha. He's right, I've driven 300+kW turbo Hondas and they only struggle in first. After that they put power down great. I'd back a turbo DC5 to destroy a turbo GT86 too.
In real world the Integra is a better drivers car than the GT86. Its only saving grace is the RWD platform. If you wanna go fast there are plenty of options including older Golf GTi, Renault Megane RS250 and even older Civic Type R.
They are both excellent choices but i would have the 86 mainly because RWD and LSD. But if you Frankenstein the 86 with the Honda engine.... NOW that would be AWESOME Also 7:08 insert DMO Deejay meme here.
Have reviewed each of those cars separately, would definitely still take the Honda. Ford sounds good but barely makes more power from a much larger turbocharged engine. It just feels lazy and under strung
Getting rid of the stock headers and getting a little tune, while still not lightning fast, gives the twins more of a linear acceleration and gives it that little bit of extra torque to feel much more satisfying.. Wish more people would stop putting overly fat tyres and robot vomit body kits on their 86’s and focused on putting the money (and brains) into killing that torque dip and there wouldn’t be such a bad rep in our community. That being said, that Integra sounds absolutely incredible.
Yeah man this thing was so sticky to the point where it wasn't as fun as a stock one because it would literally never go sideways in the dry. And agree, engine mods first, then cosmetics
I'd beg to differ that drivetrain wise that the integra doesnt have a motor that is known to blow up with corners, and is much easier to add power to such as a camshaft which would also be an easier install.
@KiwiCarLife I understood that, and from a power standpoint your right, but as a engine itself the K series is much easier to upgrade, and doesnt suffer from oil starvation which is known to lead to engine failure.
I'd take the Integra! Though if I were 18 I'd actually go with neither and get the base K20A3 Integra since it uses regular 87 gas and not premium gas. Yeah it's a bit less fun, is only 5MT, and redline is 6800RPM, but most 18 year olds aren't made of money and the reliability + cheap parts + better fuel economy really add up. Plus you can drive your friends around or just haul more random stuff in the rear due to the bigger hatch.
exactly what i did! Had my facelift base model integra for 4 years however it unfortunately got written off on the way to work. Ended up pulling the trigger and buying an s2000 as a daily driver.... miss the dc5 for its practicality. endless space, comfort and still fun to drive.
@@Oldhex1978 Maybe because the expectation its an older car. Relatively means that Integras are actually consider rather fast cars in its time while GT86 isn't slow, but considered not to be that fast. But then I wouldn't going to really care about how fast they are since both have great platforms. GT86 is a great car regardless, and if somebody wants more power, then the car is plenty capable and def more room for it.
I think he was referring to the fact the base, Type S and Type R all have basically the same torque. Simply the fact that power=torque X RPM. So they all make kinda the same torque but because the Type S revs to 8000rpm rather than 7000rpm it makes 154kW and because the Type R revs to 8400 it makes 162kW.
Would you say the Integra Type-S and the CL9 Accord Euro have similar characteristics? If not, which do you think would be preferable based on your experience of driving both? Personally, I feel that the K24 in the Accord Euro gives it a significant advantage albeit its heavier weight and it not primarily being advertised as a sporty car as opposed to the Integra Type S. Moreover, I feel that despite the commonality of the CL9 Accord Euros, in the aspect of it being a sporty fun joyride, I believe they are heavily underrated. I'd appreciate your knowledge and input on this, Cheers Liam!
Out of the box the Integra is a better drive, and back in the day when I bought my first CL9, honestly if I had bought one of these Integra's instead I'd probably still be driving it! But I sold my DC5 Type R for the Accord because the Integra was just too raw. This Type S has all the good stuff of the Type R, but with some of the refinement of the Accord. However when it comes to mods, yes the Accord has a lot more untapped potential than the Integra and with some mods its possible to get one to drive 90% as well.
Teenager? Maaan I'm 53 with an 86 GTS😂 Couldn't afford to modify cars when I was younger so I'm doing it now. bought an MY14 in 2018. First mods were headers and a tune to liven up the FA20 and pretty much done all the performance and driveability mods available to enhance the platform and kept the body stock. great car, but might have to investigate a DC5 as well......
Nah definitely not. That engine is so awful imo. Ear piercing sound, not very powerful, long gears. Have never driven a good Altezza apart from the V8 swapped one lol
I'd have it in Subaru, because that's what it is. Boxer engine, and developed by Subaru. It also doesn't sound like any Toyota. It's a very low power subi, that needs a supercharger. In blue, with gold wheels. Although there is s nice blue one with silver Work Meisters, driving around Whangaparaoa i've seen.
I guess my idea behind the video is that I've seen a lot of young car enthusiasts striving to own these as their first or second car. But yes they can appeal to anyone
I own a 2020 BRZ , while the engine is still a big meh , thanks to shorter ratios and a few tweaks the facelift had, it's slightly better. Light mod can really sort some of the issue , but the chassis / handling of this thing is unrivaled , the frustration in a stright line turn in to a big smile in corners . It's cheaper to bring the BRZ/gt86 engine closer to the Integra than to bring the integra to handle like gt86/BRZ.
Agree that the newer ones are improved, however I'd have to disagree with the last comment. A DC5R is probably the best handling FWD car from the early 2000's. Back when I had mine I was destroying 86's on track easily.
@@KiwiCarLife The fact the you destoyed 86's don't tell the full story , there are questions to be asked: What was your setup? what was thier setup? maybe you are a much better driver than them? no doubt the Integra handles amazingly, like you said it's e best handling FWD car from the early 2000 , but I pretty sure in raw handling the BRZ / GT86 handle better (stock Vs stock) Let me finish with a story: I used to have a Clio RS 197 (hot hatch version of the clio) , also a little beast - great engine horrific reliablity . Went out with a few frieds , they had cars like Mini couper S , Evo 8 , 208 GTI and so on .. to a track nearby . This day , the track instructors came , with - a 2007 Suzuki swift stock - a 100 HP hatchback - He Destroyed everrrybody! because is was a far supirior driver , and knew the track like the back of his hand! To actually test you need a proper appls to appls test , not judging by a random track day , driver skill matters so so much.
GT86 looks more modern, but that interior is just terrible, but given that it is RWD, kids will prolly have much fun with it The Integra, well, that sound and power delivery That is addictive
I did not think i would be swayed from the more equipped Toyota but as soon as you started driving the Honda I was swayed……. Your definitely correct, the Honda is a better car. Unless the 86 has a Subaru 3.0 h6 swap……
Hahah yeah they naturally appeal to anyone given the great RWD driving experience, but definitely here in NZ they're soooo common among 17yo's who just got their restricted license (equivalent of P plates)
Sorry but I've driven countless 2ZZ's and they're such an awful engine haha. Even less torque than the 86's boxer 4, and the VVTL-i comes in wayyyyy too high to be useful. With a tune to bring the "vtec" down, it would be good, but I've never driven a stock 2ZZ that I haven't found infuriating. It could be really good (for a 1.8) but it just isn't and a K20 demolishes it.
I had the first gen BRZ but the engine is such a let down… the torque dip is polar opposite of exciting engine. The chassis is sorted out well though, so the best is K20A swap into BRZ :)
Practicallity of hatchback invaluable even if DC5 is boringly tall. Toyota plastic interior & terrible visibility also degrade it, though engine is tranformed with aftermarket manifolt & cats (which may degrade suspension bushings with heat).
Honda is always gonna make better sports cars and better engines than Toyota. Honda is a racing company and was founded as one and later ventured into commercial vehicles. Toyota was founded as a commercial company that makes excellent cars and later ventured into motorsports. Honda wad born into racing and it is part of their DNA. That's why they dominate every motorsport from motoGP to Formula 1. Their racing pedigree shows in their cars.
That is true, Honda started out in racing whereas Toyota grew into it, however these days I think that's kinda irrelevant because Honda's hay day in racing was over 30 years ago. Besides, road cars really bear no resemblance to the race cars that *may* have helped to develop them. Frankly, that GT86 is a great drive ruined by the engine. If the 86 had the Integra engine (or something as good) I'd take that all day long. But the engine is the heart of a car and even though it's not RWD, the Integra is just a better drive because of the engine
@KiwiCarLife hmm I don't quite agree when you say their hay day was 30 years ago. Honda has just won 4 consecutive world titles in F1 with Red Bull and Verstappen, they are still dominating Indycar, still competing in Japanese championship, still winning in BTCC, still winning in American LeMans, they are lagging a bit behind in MotoGP but they still hold the most world titles in the sport by far and they are involved in multiple other motorsports which they dominate. The CTR is still the fastest production fwd hot hatch around the nurburgring. Actually the new CTR was developed as a Type R first then was converted into a road version. No disrespect to the GT86. Its driving dynamics are probably better than the Integra but as you say, Honda is in a different league when it comes to engines. Maybe try a K swap with the GT86😅😅😅
I guess that's true. The engine is the heart of a car and given the 86's Subaru engine, it definitely feels and sounds more Subaru Impreza than Toyota Celica/AE86
Enjoys your video's. Bought a new Honda S2000 when new. In reality, it's not a great car despite the hype.Sold at 5k KM but at least my visiting Dad from the UK used it for 2 weeks.. Feel this applies to these two. Couldn't afford the Boxster or S at the time; likewise BWW 130i. Now have a tricked 140i daily and a couple of 130i manuals. They're old but brilliant! If you don't have lots of cash, that's the sweet spot imho. Sound great, fast (ish), rwd, analog. 140i is very quick beyond Porsche's I used to sell in the 2000's; but wants to kill you despite the factory LSD.
Yeah man I've always been about value, and honestly in this current market I'd say an Integra Type S makes more sense. Sure, an S2000 is considered royalty among Honda enthusiasts, but if you just want something to drive the Integra will cost 1/4 as much but deliver 8/10th's the fun. Likewise 130i's and M135i/M140i's are about the cheapest way to get an engaging RWD driving experience when all the JDM RWD stuff has become 40-50k
Not everyone wants to be up to their eyeballs in debt for a two bedroom house somewhere in auckland. Funny thing happens when you sell a car, you get most of the money back 🤷🏼 Live a little.
Yeah if you work over a few school holidays and live at home, by the time you're 18/19 you can easily buy something around 10k. Plus, most cars are at the bottom of their depreciation curve by then so when the time comes to buy a house, you'll be able to sell it for basically what you paid for it, but have a whole lot of fun

Yep, weird though with the new GR86 Toyota just calls it the FA24
Would love to see you drive a GR86 and know your opinions on it. It's definitely an improvement over the 1st gen.
Yeah me too actually. I've driven one very briefly, need to do a review
The BRZ was great compared with the competition at the time like the MX5, but if you were coming out of an older VTEC Honda or even Celica it would just feel cheap and not thaaat great to drive
brz86 0-60 3-5 business days 😍
HAHAH
@@KiwiCarLife still more fun than the integra could dream of being.
prefacelift rsx s also have same engine as nz/audm pre facelift dc5 type r which is k20a2. but chassis and suspension is bit different. While facelift nz/audm type s basically just facelift rsx s with rhd layout.
Yeah they’re very similar cars.
86 would have been soo much better if it had an inline Yamaha tuned engine like they did with the 3S series back in the day.
All they needed to do was turbocharge it. Beams engines are gutless for everyday driving & need to be revved like a 2 stroke dirt bike to go anywhere.
I've seen plenty of 18yo's driving these cars. I think there's a lot of people choosing between these and maybe a Celica and MX-5.
Thinking of getting a 86 have a boosted 9th gen si and just looking for a good quiet daily that is still pretty fun to drive
I think if you’ve owned k series Hondas the 86 would feel like a downgrade tbh
Suzuki Swift Sport - any generation - but for an 18yr old - the zc31s is a bargain - and so much fun to drive.
Yeahh.... but these are way better. They cost more sure, but still way better
If u turbo both the 86 probably be a lot faster (on the road) due to traction
@@leowinsnever7027 Only around a parking lot
@@Hells_Gatea turbo k20 integra with no lsd is spinning wheels at any speed ur allowed to do on the road
Agree, lots of people think it being RWD is a ticket to victory, but imo the engine is the heart of a car and the Integra just "feels" so much better
My best mate daily drives a BRZ, they're suprisingly practical if you aren't a regular cab driver for friends and family
Yeah they're barely adequate and ofc no one's buying one for practicality, but the Integra is way better
They are both excellent choices but i would have the 86 mainly because RWD and LSD. But if you Frankenstein the 86 with the Honda engine.... NOW that would be AWESOME
Also 7:08 insert DMO Deejay meme here.
🤣🤣🤣Turbo.... Vtec
Yeah man a GT86 with a Honda engine would be better than the Integra, but out of the box the DC5 is better
these cars and the last Celica gen are super cool. I want to own any one of them so bad. Type S would be awesome enough for me!
2zz with a 6speed manual is a very fun car
Yeah definitely, I'd say the Celica is kinda in between. I think while different it's similarly fun as the GT86, but the Integra is better than both
Yeah no 80-120 sorry. Even if I did it on the Kapiti Expressway which is 110 I can't really post it on the net.
Love both car
They're cool aye
this is why people combine em do a lil k swap to a 86 and you got everything you'll ever need best of both worlds
That would be the perfect combo!
If nothing else it has to be the Honda just for the sound!
For sure!
Would you recommend the fn2 over the type s integra?
Nah the DC5 is just a better drive in every regard. Looks better too imo
@ some fn2 does have a lsd, does that change up anything at all? Or is the dc5 still just that good
Do a comparison of Honda civic type r (fn2) against ford focus xr5 turbo (2010)
That being said, that Integra sounds absolutely incredible.
yea there is way to many people putting like 18x9.5s on 86s or other similars cars that just don't need it at all lol
Yeah man this thing was so sticky to the point where it wasn't as fun as a stock one because it would literally never go sideways in the dry. And agree, engine mods first, then cosmetics
Xsi integra or the AE101 levin was the flavour when I was 18.
Yeah true! I guess these are the modern equivalents
I'd beg to differ that drivetrain wise that the integra doesnt have a motor that is known to blow up with corners, and is much easier to add power to such as a camshaft which would also be an easier install.
Think you might have misheard me. I said the GT86 has a better engine than the base Integra, but the Type S's engine is way better than the 86
@KiwiCarLife I understood that, and from a power standpoint your right, but as a engine itself the K series is much easier to upgrade, and doesnt suffer from oil starvation which is known to lead to engine failure.
I guess I'm a 30year old teen because I still want a brz/86
Haha honestly I would own both too
i bought a 2000 2zz manual celica instead!
the correct decision lmao, I bought mine for 5
For the price I guess that makes sense, they are cheap compared to these. But you get what you pay for
I'd take the Integra!
True, as an 18yo my first car was a base 5 speed manual Integra. And honestly at the time I thought it was phenomenal.
Crazy how both Integra's have the same Nm output.
Why is it crazy.
Teenager? Maaan I'm 53 with an 86 GTS😂
Couldn't afford to modify cars when I was younger so I'm doing it now. bought an MY14 in 2018. First mods were headers and a tune to liven up the FA20 and pretty much done all the performance and driveability mods available to enhance the platform and kept the body stock. great car, but might have to investigate a DC5 as well......
Very nice! Yeah these definitely appeal to everyone despite the fact a lot of youngsters have them haha

I always want dc5 integra but if I can’t find a good one then gt86
Yeah that’s a good strategy. Nice DC5’s are getting hard to come by
I like the integra more but unfortunately in the UK they are selling for silly money now. The 86 needs engine mods to compete
Agree with both. Here they’re expensive too. 13-16k NZD. Almost as much as a jdm type r
Think the 3sge altezza fits nice between the 2
Nah definitely not.
Yeah me too tbh. BRZ feels more fitting given it has a Subaru engine
Then me buying an Alfa 159 at 18 lol. I love it though
Haha honestly they're surprisingly good cars!
everyday i see one and just want it.
the gt86
They are very nice looking cars
None of these cars are for 18 year old kids. These cars are for auto enthusiasts, not fan boys that end up ruining them.
you can be an auto enthusiast at any age, plenty of old people doing the same trashy mods as teenagers who don’t know better
@@KiwiCarLife The fact the you destoyed 86's don't tell the full story , there are questions to be asked:
What was your setup? what was thier setup? maybe you are a much better driver than them? no doubt the Integra handles amazingly, like you said it's e best handling FWD car from the early 2000 , but I pretty sure in raw handling the BRZ / GT86 handle better (stock Vs stock)
Let me finish with a story:
I used to have a Clio RS 197 (hot hatch version of the clio) , also a little beast - great engine horrific reliablity .
Thx for featuring my 86 as well, I will get my revenge soon 😈😈
Hahah yesssss
GT86 looks more modern, but that interior is just terrible, but given that it is RWD, kids will prolly have much fun with it
The Integra, well, that sound and power delivery
That is addictive
Yeah agree the interior is kinda average aye. But I guess kids don't really care they just wanna go sideways into a hedge
Which do u perfer. K20a stock or k24 block + k20a head?
K20a for me. More character more revs.
A built K24 is objectively better, but out of the box K20 is more fun

I did not think i would be swayed from the more equipped Toyota but as soon as you started driving the Honda I was swayed……. Your definitely correct, the Honda is a better car. Unless the 86 has a Subaru 3.0 h6 swap……

My nephew does keep telling me i drive a P-Platers car...😅
Hahah yeah they naturally appeal to anyone given the great RWD driving experience, but definitely here in NZ they're soooo common among 17yo's who just got their restricted license (equivalent of P plates)
The answer is the mix of both of these, the Corolla Z Aerotourer with the 2zzge & 6spd manual
its not really a mix though, its a more practical and less performance focused alternative to a dc5

Integra is a Real Honda, GT86 is Toyota by name only.
I guess that's true. The engine is the heart of a car and given the 86's Subaru engine, it definitely feels and sounds more Subaru Impreza than Toyota Celica/AE86
Ive owned 5 Ae86s and I just love that rear wheel drive. Sorry Honda. Great video mate I love your enthusiasm
AE86 is quite different though. I'd rather have a zingy K20 (like the 4A-GE) than a lackluster boxer 4, even if it is RWD
