I'm not sure if that is true but you could always split the bag into two smaller ones and keep the one you're not using somewhere cool and dry. Make sure to seal it up airtight and keep it away from sunlight and I think it'll last for way longer than 6 months! I keep it in it's original bag inside my house and bring it outside each time to feed my fish.
