I have no idea how I found this video and I have no desire to put in a garden pond in my back yard, but for some reason I watched this very intently from start to finish ha. Very nice build and good video.
I never understood why people want to look down at their beautiful fish. I have an aquarium built into the wall above my headboard. 99% you'll never see from above. The bubbles rising to the top put me to sleep
Your craftsmanship is top notch, as are your video editing skills. This was entertaining and inspiring. Your attention to detail helped make this a great success.
I work for a very specialised firm who build large Koi show ponds and I must comment that this is THE best DIY pond project that I have seen described on TH-cam in many years. Of course I can suggest different things but it is your pond and you have done an awesome job in making it, thank you so much for sharing
I placed a four tier plastic vegetable stand into the trash wheelie bin and packed each of the four plastic shelves with media from course sponge at the bottom to fine sponge at the top. When the sponge needs cleaning I simply lift out the plastic vegetable shelf stand and spray the whole thing with a high pressure hose. I also drilled a hole at the bottom of the bin and fitted a drain cap so it makes it easy to drain the dirty water when I begin cleaning.
This was so great to watch. I love how you arent using tons of expensive equipment and supplies. This is way more like what the average person could do.
A unique example of packing a video with useful information and beautifully timed video. Not a wasted moment. No padding. No head and shoulders smug shot. Congratulations! Subscribed. One slight worry would be herons perching on the side. I lost all my goldfish to a greedy heron. Even had to rescue the bird when it got caught under my netting! 😇
Thank you! Yeah, I try to provide as much info as I can, even though I am still learning myself. Sorry to hear the heron got your fish, they can for sure be a big issue, my dad’s pond got emptied by a heron also..
While I do not understand why this video popped up on my recommended, I definitely learned a thing or two that will help with future projects I was planning to take on around the house! Amazing work, well done.
You did an amazing job sir, you built a wonderfully made pond. I personally wouldn't add any type of substrate, because goldfish love to scavenge for food so they might suck up the substrate and give them some problems. Eventually you will get an algae carpet at the bottom of your pond, and it will look like a grass field, it will grow on your walls as well, but just scrape the sides of your walls about every three months and your pond will look amazing with an algae grass carpet floor. This was a gorgeous build sir, I can't wait to see the further updates of your beautiful pond.
Another amazing video. I love your projects. Perfect blend of incredibly professional looking whilst also looking just about achievable for the average joe like me!
Well impressed by your skills and design, well done! I would leave the bottom of the pond bear to then easily get all that sludge out that will collect each season. The only thing I would of done differently is run the outlet from the mechanical filter into the biological filter to stop the latter from getting clogged up. As you have it the mechanical dirt will get divided equally between the filters which would worry me.
Thank you! Yeah, that was the original plan, to have the water go from the mechanical filter into the biological, but I was struggling to work out the flow rates required, diameter of outlets/ inlets etc.. so decided to to keep them separate. I am in the planning stages of a big in ground pond at the moment though, and I really want the mechanical to feed into the biological in that pond, as I do think it is the best way to have it!
I'm an aquarium guy really, but I was fascinated by your build. I had a few concerns as I was watching, so there were a few sharp breaths, but you addressed the concerns as you went and I exhaled in relief. It looks really nice too. I think the mechanical filtration could be done better, but it would cost a lot on a pond scale, so I think as a cheaper set up you did well. I'm not a fan of alfagrog, so that's the only thing I would change out.
Thank you! Yeah, I agree the mechanically filter could be better, the real test will be how it handles the summer months when the waste load is at its highest! I only really used the alfagrog as I bought a big bag of it years ago and thought I may as well use it up. 👍
That is an awesome build and one that inspired me a lot to build something like this in my garden! One thing I would have done differently is use the water coming from the mechanical filter to go directly into the gravel filter (by gravity, maybe setting the latter one a little lower) and thus having mechanically clean water only in the gravel filter.
Thank you! I did think about doing that, but wasn’t sure on what hose/ pipe diameters I need to use, plus I was struggling to work out the right flow rate to make sure it all ran smoothly, so in the end decided to keep them separate. Also I thought by keeping them separate if I ever have a problem with one of the filters, I can just divert all the water to the other one. But yeah, ideally it would be good to have the water go from the mechanical filter into the bog 👍😊
Nice one! Loved the way you got the wood framing around it (stealing the idea 🙂). The only thing I might do different, wouldn't put the bog filter exit facing the mechanical one. One of those would get a "L" shaped end to create a circular water current. Cheers from Portugal
I would like to make one small addition, use a UV light for the mechanical filtration section. It greatly reduced the amount of cleaning my Koi pond required and helped keep the water very clear and free of most parasites. It was well worth the cost. I love what you did and will do about the same for my Florida home. The key to any great pond is definitely the filtration system.
Really love this, makes me want too build one !! Only thing i will say is the second air stone would have been better in the bio filter to help the nitrification process and make amonia removal more effective
Thank you! Yeah, did wonder about that, but then I also wondered if part of how the bog filter works so well is potentially creating areas of lower oxygen where anoxic/ anaerobic bacteria can grow and convert the nitrate. I could be wrong on that, but just something I kind of wondered. That said, I did consider putting an airstone down the clean-out snorkel for the aerobic bacteria, and to help prevent with channeling.
WOW!!! That was such a GOOD video! Your designs are straight forward and attractive. It's easy to understand and Gives me confidence that I could do my own above ground pond as well. Had one then a contractor did but it wasn't supported well enough and the side started to bow. So I broke it down and put the fish in the big pot. My big koi spawned this year so I have babies! I am using 2 500 gallon above ground pools, but want to make something more permanent. I want to have space to grow out some of the fry before I sell them. Subscribed :)
Im a total novice, trying to learn all the "whys" love your videos so far! Any reason you did no insulation under the base as you did on your ondeck pond? Can you do a "my biggest mistakes vid" to share anything you've learned in your experience. Yeah, really stoked just explain reasoning behind your builds a tad more ❤ 🐟
Excellent video. You make it look so easy. A quality build totally impressed. Just got into fish. Fishtanks and ponds are such lovely things to have. Good job 😂
Wow! Great job with this bro! You are quite the carpenter. It really looks great. I agree with you on keeping the bottom of the pond bare for easy maintenance
Thanks you, bro! Appreciate it!! I was really pleased with how it came out, and the bare bottom will defo be staying.. makes it really easy when using the pond vac! All covered up for winter now though.. it’s been proper cold here for the last couple of weeks!!
Nice build mate. Really like the attention to detail in terms of having it all nicely tucked away with wood cladding. The two separate filters seems a bit redundant. I've got a similar above ground setup and just have a bog filter. Crystal clear and well balanced waters.
I've got two wheelie bins filled with k1 and k2 media and my 2 pallet x 2 pallet wide pond is struggling to fight the green water I've threw some natural stuff in an done a full clean but think I might need some plants as the flow from the bins back in is nothing compared to how much water is in there. Only 3 or 4 huge koi and ten or so mixed gold fish should I be plumbing my uv filter I've not bothered to fit?? It's a never ending project everything's always for another day 😂
I love your dedication to insulation, doing it 100% let's me sleep better. The filter system looks great, I think the Bio filter alone would be enough to keep everything clean.
I have a really similar pond to this new build, but I just have the bog filter for filtration. Funny enough I was thinking of splitting my pump with a T piece like you have done here for a mechanical filter. Would be interested to see how the water quality looks in a few months time so please do some update videos! Great job!
I meet a gentleman complaining about what was happening to his back yard fish pond. He kept putting new fish in his pond and they would disappear. He thought a neighbor's cat was killing his fish. So, he watched the pond from his house and to his surprise a very large gray crane flew down, and began plucking the fish out of his pond.
It’s true about the plastic crane, that is why they sell them so much. Herons are territorial and if they see one they won’t go there, before mine I had a heron and then a owl at night. The heron would traumatize my koi, stabbing them or stabbing them and leaving them in the yard. They were too big for him. It was horrific. The heron works great, and in winter when they are slow and the water aeration in decreased to one side as to not mix warmed bottom water with cold top water. I hate nets cause they can drop and entangle animals. So now I just put on top to float with those plastic ball pit balls that kids crawl through, they sell black ones for a lot of money. I said no to that and just got the cheap colored ones. They are very inexpensive and in the winter no one is hanging out by the pond. They can pop their heads out, frogs can jump out if it warms up and turtles can sun. No one gets trapped in our out. I don’t feed in the winter so no big deal.
This is soooo helpful. Watched so many videos, now watching this it's all come together. And it's beautifully done. Thank you for explaining every step, it's appreciated by this pond newbie!
I love this. I enjoyed every bit of it. Thank you for making this video. It makes me more willing and less afraid to try my own build. Beautifully done, time well spent.
Beautiful job! I have always been blown away by the idea of creating my own ecosystem. I live in Canada where we only get pond worthy weather for 1/3 of the year. The struggle is real.
Thank you! Yeah, your winters look chilly.. 🥶 I follows a couple of koi keepers in Canada, I think they have to go really deep with there ponds so the fish can over winter down at the bottom..
I have a 90ltr koi built very similar to yours apart from around the outside another layer of decking wood wide enough and used as a flower bed, and I used massive solar filters and some plants inside and bigger one on top the float in polystyrene and I've made hide whole for them! We have Butterfly Koi but we did it like this due to cats and the solar filters are brilliant ❤
In my country, we really love to make diy koi pond and I can say what you did with your filter pond are on point. I am just wondering why not connecting the mechanical and the bog as a continuous filter ? And in my experience, UV lamp helps a lot with algae, maybe you can add it as an external UV or use the internal one and put it inside the outlet pipe (be careful not to look directly at submersible UV light like this tho)
I did think about connecting the mechanical filter to the bog, sort of like a pre-filter, but I was struggling to work out flow rates and what size fittings I would need, so decided to keep them separate. I may add a uv in the future if I think the pond needs it, but hoping to get away without adding one for now 😊
Yeah, i did wonder about putting an overflow in, but decided against it in the end.. I think it will be alright, even if it overflows the fish won’t be able to go over the edge because trim around the top is higher than the top of the tub, and hopefully the water will just go into he ground around the pond.. I’ll keep an eye on it though, and incorporate something if needed 😊
Having a pond above ground is not suitable for most climates, it is prone to overheat in summer and completely freeze in winter. I would not recommend to copy this.
I never said it was the perfect design for every climate.. but I also think that most people who live in particularly hot areas or particularly cold area are probably aware that there situation may be a little different and require some adjustments because of that. ✌️
some interesting ideas you had there I like the fish refuge shelf idea might try that in my pond to keep birds from trying to get fish. the insulation you put in does not look like closed cell foam is it going to soak up water? I like that purple pickerel plant and the water iris, but both just keep growing and spreading crazy large I have them in 3-gallon black buckets and you would never even know that there is soil in there they have overflowed the buckets completely. The pickerel is so huge at end of season I drag it out and chop whole top off with a machete and it grows back next year to 3 foot tall and 4 foot wide. I had bottom of pond empty but then some gravel snuck in, and the koi and goldfish chew on it so not much dirt collects in the small amount of gravel it probably helps keep the plastic from breaking down over time in sunlight.
Hi there! I’ve never had pickerel weed before, so thought I’d give it a go. It’s yet to start growing back this Spring yet though, and I’m a little worried it may have died off over the winter.. are you in the UK? I’m wondering if it got too cold for it.. 😬
@@GingerFishyOfficial I am in pennsylvania United states similar to UK might be a bit colder here in winter our plant looks dead then once it is warm out and it gets sun and fertilizer it grows like crazy it likes hot weather might be a picture of fishpond from last spring on my u tube channel
This was amazing, you homemade all the “Aquascape” expensive products I want but don’t want the high cost! No one else does but I always raise my pumps as an “in case” as well! Probably helps in winter as well as you don’t want to pull the warmer water below and mix with outside colder air. Plant creeping Jenny as well, they don’t mind wet feet either! Algae isn’t a bad thing, just have. Uv light to not have pea green water. I always do substrate, it helps with fine algae and bacteria places to grab for the natural environment of the aquatic animals. Natural growth on the substrate is not a bad thing. I also have solar e wire stones in case of power outage.
As to be the best video on pond building I've seen on TH-cam, so much info in sort time and it all made clear sence and I'm gonna build a koi pond now thank you
Makes me want a pond on my patio. Doesn't look difficult thanks to your clear instructions. Thank you.👍 P.S. Just a thought. Slate on the bottom of the pond would look nice and be easy to maintenance.
I love all of it. wow. Such a great design and beautiful as well. I will be copying the design completely. But I'll use milk crates to create voids and and stands. I say add stones to the pond. I love how detailed your video is and you didn't skip steps or absurdly fast forward through essential steps.
You just popped up on my TH-cam and I have no intension of building a pond.......so it's strange that I thoroughly enjoyed watching you build yours! I think your fish will be happy
Very nice. Been into aquariums and ponds for 20 years. Always had bigger and bigger ponds at home but never did an above ground. I maybe try one now. Looks better then I thought it would
Great looking set up! As an outdoor pond I wouldn't put any substrate down at the bottom. Leave it empty - it's black so gives the deep look and easy to clean
Lovely project mate. I hope that filtration system works, otherwise that will turn into a mosquito sanctuary. I have a neighbour here in the east end of London, with a similar set-up. God, in summer when we have those balmy British summer days, the amout of mosquitoes even surpassed that of my native South Africa!
I’ve made my filter for my 300 gallon pond out of three planter pots with no drain holes. I ran a 3 inch pipe through the lower sections of it to where all three are connected that way. I have 2 inch pipe more at the top of the planter to allow the water to drain into the pond. I used lava rock and have all sorts of plants mainly elephant ears because they just love the nutrients they get. My water is sparkling clear. I can’t complain at all about my setup especially cobbling it up together really fast because my old filter system crashed.
@@GingerFishyOfficial great pond build just wanting to understand the pond hosing system more how do you make the pump, mechanical filter and bog filter all work at same time
I'm happy to have found a pond build that I could actually do myself. And afford! Bonus: it looks great!! Thanks for the in-depth how to one the filtration as well. I finally understand!
Definitely don't add rock to the bottom of the pond as it traps muck and makes it hard to clean. Some rocks for esthetics is fine. As far as the UV light, you won't need it if the biological/bog/wetland filter is big enough and working correctly (enough plant roots to remove the minerals for the system). A UV light really only masks the issue of minerals in the water because it doesn't remove them from the system. Great job on the video and explanations!
Thank you for the wonderfully informative video. Your pond is both well thought out, functional and beautiful. As for adding anything to the bottom, maybe some large pond stones? Like no smaller than 5 inches? Not to many, just something that would cover some of the plastic bottom while adding more dimension. They would also be easier for you to remove if needed for cleaning. Thanks again and I look forward to your next video.
That's amazing dude, very impressive; kinda motivated me to finish off my garden (converting from yer typical English garden to a tropical garden owing to the weather we get now here in The Fens)
Literally love this. I'm really keen to make a small pond for a section of my small garden. Will have to be an above ground pong though. Great ideas. Great job. Lucky man.
Properly executed but I have a couple of question: why 2 filters? -with your correct ratio of bog (30%) you don't need a mechanical filtration, unless you are trying to acquafarm tilapia or similar. -how will you remove/wash the sponges in the mechanical filter? I really recommend a clean off valve on the bottom of mech and bog tank when you work with such heavy size, especially in case of seasonal changes.
I have no idea how I found this video and I have no desire to put in a garden pond in my back yard, but for some reason I watched this very intently from start to finish ha. Very nice build and good video.
😂 Thank you!

If you put a plastic heron or crane near the pond, other ones won't take dinner to go. If they think it's claimed by another heron/crane, they move on

you're so patient and so great at building. 😍 great at video production too. this was a joy to watch, and inspiring.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!! 😊
I love this. I enjoyed every bit of it. Thank you for making this video. It makes me more willing and less afraid to try my own build. Beautifully done, time well spent.
Thank you!
Incrível!!! Adoro assistir esse passo-a-passo na construção de lagos, e lagos de jardim. Muito bom!!! pt-br
Fantastic build! I also vote no gravel. The vacuum for cleaning is a brilliant idea. Is it a special kind of vacuum or just a wet vac?
I may add a uv in the future if I think the pond needs it, but hoping to get away without adding one for now 😊
Nice job dude super big and beautiful…..looking forward to some updates and how nicely these plants grow 😀😀👍👍
Thank you!! 😊 Will defo be sure to do some updates!! 👍
One of the best video demonstrating fish pond. Really great work, Hats off. Keep continuing
Thank you! I will do 👍😊
Looks amazing, Only problem i see is no overflow for when it rains, but otherwise really great job you have done.
He had a similar setup for 3 years, the fish looked alive
@@96Caleb96 Maybe he lives in a climate where it's neither hot nor cold or maybe....as a youtuber he isn't honest, since that would hurt his income.
We all fish keep, pond keep at our own risk man. All the different ways of doing things work for others or may not.
That’s why I added the insulation, and why I’ll add a cover, and possibly a heater in the winter!
I never said it was the perfect design for every climate.. but I also think that most people who live in particularly hot areas or particularly cold area are probably aware that there situation may be a little different and require some adjustments because of that. ✌️
Man, I think I can do this after watching this video! Nervously excited!
Definitely! Just take your time, and enjoy the process! 👍
some interesting ideas you had there I like the fish refuge shelf idea might try that in my pond to keep birds from trying to get fish.
the insulation you put in does not look like closed cell foam is it going to soak up water?
Mind blowing project. I hope one day I will build this type of the system in my abode.
Thank you! 😊
Thank you! I’ll definitely get some creeping Jenny for the bog filter!! 😊
Wow man, the attention to detail here makes for a super nice finished project. Very impressive.
Thank you! 😊
this build is no rocket science, but you do it beautiful and you show not everything has to be extremely expensive. Nice home for your fish, good job.
Thank you! 😊
brilliant job ginger showing all the steps of the build it looks great 👍👍
That’s bro, appreciate it 👊😊
love the design and look of this garden pond- thanks for sharing mate
Thank you!
As to be the best video on pond building I've seen on TH-cam, so much info in sort time and it all made clear sence and I'm gonna build a koi pond now thank you
Thank you!
Makes me want a pond on my patio. Doesn't look difficult thanks to your clear instructions. Thank you.👍 P.S. Just a thought. Slate on the bottom of the pond would look nice and be easy to maintenance.
Absolutely a great video! Loved everything about it, perfect commentary and and lovely pond!
Thank you!
Truly a wonderful creative build , thoroughly enjoyed watching how you did everything…great job…Brian.
What a great looking pond. Excellent 😀
Thank you! 😀
I love all of it. wow. Such a great design and beautiful as well. I will be copying the design completely. But I'll use milk crates to create voids and and stands. I say add stones to the pond. I love how detailed your video is and you didn't skip steps or absurdly fast forward through essential steps.
Thank you! Yeah, I tried to show as much as I could whilst not making the video too long.. 😊
Saved. I look forward to being able to use the basis as this for inspiration for the pond or ponds I intend to build. Thank you for sharing with us.
That’s awesome! Good luck with your build/builds!!
You just popped up on my TH-cam and I have no intension of building a pond.......so it's strange that I thoroughly enjoyed watching you build yours! I think your fish will be happy
Haha, I’m glad you enjoyed the build! 😊
Very nice. Been into aquariums and ponds for 20 years. Always had bigger and bigger ponds at home but never did an above ground. I maybe try one now. Looks better then I thought it would
Thank you! Yeah, I’m hoping to build a bigger in ground pond at some point!!!
Very simple and beautiful! Bravo!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful job. And very well explained step by step. 😊
Thank you! 👊
I really love the high level of attention to details in your work. 👍
Thank you! 😊
Done a super job mate. Well done. Bet you are chuffed with it.
Thank you mate, yeah I was really pleased with how it came out!
Great looking set up! As an outdoor pond I wouldn't put any substrate down at the bottom. Leave it empty - it's black so gives the deep look and easy to clean
Thank you! Yeah, defo be keeping it bare bottom! 👊
Sounds awesome.. you can’t beat a DIY filter!!! 👊😊
Pic?
Wow u made that all look easy. Thanks for the video got some fab ideas to pimp my pond up with xx
Thank you! 😊
That’s a quality build, great voice over and worthwhile use of products. Well done, I really enjoyed watching ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much 😁
I'm from the Philippines I love to watch your video, it's very helpful for me couse I have a pond and fish on my backyard.
Glad you enjoy the videos!
Wow, this is looking fabulous. Can’t wait to see it all finished. 😁
Thank you! I’m really looking forward to getting the finishing touches all done, and of course adding the fish!! 😊
@@GingerFishyOfficial great pond build just wanting to understand the pond hosing system more how do you make the pump, mechanical filter and bog filter all work at same time
Great job! As much as I would like to have a similar build, Racoons and skunks would love the fish buffet and it would be gone in 2 seconds flat 😂
Yeah, we don’t have raccoons here.. but make sure you watch the next video, I may have you covered 😊
There are invisible grids that you can get to float in your pond and protect fish
This is the UK and we do no have these type of animals.
Looks cool brother well done and thanks for sharing your video
Thank you bro!!!
I'm happy to have found a pond build that I could actually do myself. And afford! Bonus: it looks great!! Thanks for the in-depth how to one the filtration as well. I finally understand!
Thank you!! I’m glad you like it.. Good luck with your build!! 😊
I love love the no power saw!
Free workout! 💪
Exactly my thoughts.. Thank you!! 👊
That was brilliant to watch, professional and well explained, thank you.
Creative smart concept
Thank you! 😊
Thank you! That’s very nice of you to say!! Yeah, I think I may add some larger rocks to the bottom this Spring! 😊
The best outdoor pond build I have ever seen .... I'll use this design when i get an opportunity to build a pond for myself.
Thank you!! That’s very nice of you to say!!! 😊
That's amazing dude, very impressive; kinda motivated me to finish off my garden (converting from yer typical English garden to a tropical garden owing to the weather we get now here in The Fens)
That’s an amazing build with a well informed video.
Literally love this. I'm really keen to make a small pond for a section of my small garden. Will have to be an above ground pong though. Great ideas. Great job. Lucky man.
Thank you! 😊
It's exactly what I am looking for to update my pond. A big thank!!
Glad I could help! 😊
Wow!! Great video and love the pond❤👍🏻
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!!! 😊
I know nothing about ponds or fish but it looks very doable and a great feature. Well done my fellow ginger, subbed👍
Thank you mate! 😊
