I miss the pattern dances (compulsory and original). Really let you compare more directly. Modern audiences don’t care so much about the technical aspects though (as illustrated by several of the comments here!).

Torvill and Dean were sorely missed here.

I have to call bull when I see it. Sorry. The top pairs here were really weak in my opinion. Yes, they skater closer together AT TIMES, but there was none of the traditional, intricate "leg to leg interlocking" that the Tango is known for. However, you did see it with the Dushenays (and even with Suzy and Scott from the U.S. - whose performance was top rate). So, it's quite telling that IN CANADA, the Russians did not get a standing ovation. Why do I put IN CANADA is all caps? Because they have notoriously knowledgeable skating audiences. I had suspected something was going on when I was younger, but I was too young at the time to know what corrupt judging was, nor did I suspect there was a Russian bias in pairs and dance. But I knew that the top skaters were not even the most dynamic. So, whatever, History has had the last word on this. The only team I remember from this even are the Dushenays.

The Soviet pairs were technically better but the Duchenays were more entertaining and fun to watch.

Agree somewhat, but there are many subtleties in ice dance. The Duchanys were technically weak, unfortunately she was much a better skater than he, and his posture didn’t really help the topline problems resulting from their height mismatch. Tango requires excellent hold positions. The Russians have superb lean and edges, and their dance holds are, frankly, superior. It’s not just whose choreography you liked better.
