    I had the pleasure of skating with them in the summer of 1987 under the tutelege of Mrs Stong and Mr Briscoe. I watch the beginnings of this program and knew it was going to be something special. To watch the completed program at the 1988 Olympics gave me goose bumps. There are only two Ice Dance programs that do this to me: Wilson and McCall's Ragtime and Torvill and Dean's Bolero. These two programs interpret every second of the music.

    Thanks for the upload. Fun and intricate choreography. I remember Tracy said once after one competition, the judges told her she and Rob were the best (though they didn't give them the gold). So sad that Rob McCall died so young of AIDS. Of course, Tracy Wilson is a commentator for CBS during the Olympics, and commentates most of the time for CBC, and also for CTV.

    Still one of the best ice dances ever...Bless the memory of the amazing Rob McCall. We can only imagine what kind of dances he'd be concocting for today's competitors if he were still with us.

    This was a non-stop clever dance, perfectly on beat with the music throughout their program. It has to be one of the most fun filled program both for Tracy and Robert and the audience.

    the crowd's reaction on the footwork sequence beginning at 4:30 is awesome... this free dance is a classic. I think with some adjustments it could even stand under the new scoring system..

    One of my all time favorite ice dances. I thought it deserved the gold medal back in '88, and to this day, still do.
    Rob you are missed.

    That footwork sequence at 4:30 is almost impossible. They make it look so easy. Unlike the Russians who skated miles apart, everything they did was difficult because they were so close together.

    It's ironic how when ice DANCE goes all dramatic and theatric, it's the teams who actually dance who are marked lower (Bourne/Kraatz, Punsalun/Swallow, the Lithuanians).

    • @MsRumex
      @MsRumex 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bourne/Kraatz, skated way to open in their FD and had way to simple OD to be considered medal contender (in 1998)

    I can't believe folks believe that figure skating isn't tainted by politics and reputation. I think it is rampant and more blatant now that judges are concealed by new scoring system.

    • @alexsdb9712
      @alexsdb9712 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. High-level sports are so dirty. It doesn't mean its dirty in all corners and sides, but there are those certain few or circles who are corrupt and cause the mess. They ruin it for all, and the sport. Figure skating corrupt era: 1970s to early 2000s. Beautiful eras, said to be the modern golden age, but unfortunately very corrupt. Bloc voting was the game. Today's skating isn't completely clean either even with the new CoP system.

    • @alien8855
      @alien8855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alexsdb9712 Imo the new system is even more easier for cheating, corruption and dirty playing than the old 6.0 system. Atleast in the old system people could actually see and understand the scores even the unfair ones given by what judges from what country to the skaters and the bloc voting. Nowadays with the new judging system everything is anonymous and confusing for people!

    • @alexsdb9712
      @alexsdb9712 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alien8855 Amen! I was fearing it would happen, but things like this always do. This newer system simply adapted or the judges/organization/committees adapted to it and found ways to play their dirty game. Simply tragic for the sport and art.

    This made me smile...a big smile in 2024...36 years after I saw the original performance. The 1988 Olympics in Calgary is my favorite of them all by far. This brings back such fond memories that will be with me until the day I die. No, strike that. I'm taking these memories with me to Heaven (I hope...Lol)!

    What a "nice" interviewer. So motivational. "I think you have got a real shot (awkward pause) for third Place." Rob's reaction a Genuine "Why thank you." without sarcasm, or a "Thanks a lot." put that Dude in his place.
    I was 17 when they did this Dance and had this "Whoa! Look at their footwork. How do they do that?".

  • @gk891
    @gk891 12 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I agree that Bestemianova & Bukin skated miles apart (they always do) but Klimova & Ponomarenko didn't. Both Wilson & McCall and Klimova & Ponomarenko were leagues better than B&B.

    • @deaconconway5281
      @deaconconway5281 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes I had Klimova & Ponomarenko winning gold, Wilson & McCall silver, and Bestiamanova & Bukin only bronze. They were 3 time World Champs though, they were never not winning in Calgary barring a huge fall in the free dance or original dance, and even then they might have won.

    • @gk891
      @gk891 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very true. The thing about B&B is that they had some amazing compulsories (their choctaws in many the compulsory dances were some of the best in the business). Yet they never transferred those skills over into their OSPs or FDs. Instead, there was a ton of heaving, facial expressions, and dramatic snap actions.

  • @victoriar9728

    @dasher70 Bolero, to me, is much more dramatic than this...and because of that more moving. So I think that a more dramatic piece MIGHT have helped their case for Gold because B and B were nothing but DRAMA.
    But I only say might because they could have probably done everything under the sun and still only placed 3rd.
    Thank Goodness Ice Dance is becoming less Political...and thus less of a joke.

    Is it imperative to undermine other skaters to compliment Rob McCall & Tracy Wilson?
    I enjoyed the intricacies and spontaneity of this program. However, I can't see how RM & TW could have overcome the Soviets with their technical savvy & bold artistry. Also, the Soviets beat them hands down in CD & OSD.

    Thanks!) Very interesting skaters! Flying, musical, a lot of interesting things in skating (у них было много интересных находок). But there is not enough clarity of lines (не достаточно чистые линии), Tracy doesn't stretch your feet enough (не дотягивала ноги (ступни)).
    Russian skaters Zueva and Vitman skated very interestingly, drew attention to themselves, even when they took 6-8 places at the USSR Championship. They had a lot to show at the rink (им было что сказать), but they weren't known as skaters.
    Now Marina Zueva is a great coach. And Tracy is working successfully with Brian.
    And I am happy for them, for their contribution to the development of figure skating!❤
