Minor correction in spreadsheet for the formula that generates random games by length. The error has since been fixed, but if you downloaded the spreadsheet before the correction you will need to go to the '-' tab and change the formula in B3 to have = signs right after the less than and greater signs. Should be very straight forward, but here is an illustrative example: x.com/orbalology/status/1749692407237742614?s=20
Ha! Same with me... there are almost always games that are coming out that take precedence over everything in my backlog, unfortunately, but especially given the quote by Ubisoft about games moving from a physical model to a "rent to play" model (which I am genuinely scared will happen with a majority of gaming companies soon), I will be thankful at that point to have a whack of physical games to play that I actually own.
@@themanboycave122Most games are available digitally now already. The last thing I want is for games to go digital-only: I hate not owning things. I've discontinued all my streaming services and have started buying up my favorite movies and TV shows on DVD / BluRay because I've just had too many instances of being in the middle of a TV show when suddenly, it vanishes off Netflix or Hulu. If games go digital only, they're going to lose money from the many people who do buy big backlogs of games. There will literally be no reason for me to preorder anything ever again if that's the case, which means probably $2000 a year less that I'll be spending.
Your videos are almost like ASMR to me. Your voice is relaxing and you seem like a very nice genuine person which is rare these days. Hoping for nothing but the best for you and your channel.
Girl, you are amazing. Incredible. I LOVE me some spreadsheets and organization and you just crushed it with this. EXCELLENT work, EXCELLENT video, I am honestly blown away! Bravo!
you know you're in for a good time when Google Sheets makes an appearance. Really enjoying these organizational videos! I'm also on a mission this year to narrow down my backlog. 109 games last I checked...gonna be a long year
This is a great idea!!!! I have like 30+ games in different systems that i haven't played, and when I want to play something, i can't decide or feel overwhelmed. Thank you for this, very useful.
I love using How Long To Beat It is such a useful tool for tackling any type of backlog. I never really thought about using a spreadsheet I definitely will be making one. Your tips are very useful and can help anyone be more organized and picking what games to complete next. Very helpful video Idea you did an amazing job!👍
Great idea! I swear i spend more time staring at my games, trying to decide what to play next. This will save so much time and less headache since decision-making is hard.
This…this is beautiful😭 I love the randomizer and the bonus stats! I will definitely be using this, it’s great and honestly just what I need to keep track of all of my games! Thanks for making this, Emily!!
Being someone who creates elaborate spreadsheets for everything, this video is injecting pure dopamine into my system. Thank you for this incredible service.
I have to say that I loved this video. I was an avid gamer and now the backlog is a real challenge for me with two kids and a job with long hours. Getting the games into the spreadsheet (140 across PC, PS5, Switch) and clicking the randomize button was really, really therapeutic. Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons it is!
I'm glad to hear this spreadsheet was both useful & therapeutic for you so far! Hope you're able to knock off a lot of games from your backlog this year :)
You got this Emily! I believe you will have a successful low buy for videogames this year. You've set your intentions and made the goal accessible & placed your guard rails (i.e. limited spending towards hobbies as per your last couple of videos). I'm looking forward to your highlights & overall thoughts as you continue to play your games😊 I'm using your tracking spending excel sheet & prioritizing games based on what I'm most exicted to play. Currently that's Physconuats & then Physcnauts 2😁
You can tell when something was created with passion and love. This video, just like the last one, was very fun to watch. I'm a mood gamer, and I don't believe that's going to change anytime soon, but seeing you having fun with that spreadsheet made me want to download a copy tinker about with it.
Im a mood gamer too. That's why I never finish anything. Being a games channel streamer would be a nightmare as I don't force myself to play if I don't feel like it. I'd quickly lose any audience I ever gained by changing my mind on what I'm going to play or just not playing at all and sitting there reading a book!
Thank you so much for this, Emily! I also suffer from choice paralysis, I have A LOT in my backlog and I'm currently in sort of a gaming burnout (for months actually), but your videos are bringing me the desire to play again. Thank you!!! And btw, I'm so so so happy I found your channel, you're so sweet and share alot of valuable information, I'm a fan now, hehe. :3
I use a 3 tiered, Finished, Tried and Not Played category for the games in my collection excel sheet, I think it works well enough. Cool to see your method broken down!
You´ve just become my favorite TH-camr Gamer, you solved my problem of how to tackle my 500+ backlog which I´ll likely never finish but at least I´ll know where to start without missing the good games. Thank you so much! PS: I also love when someone loves Excel as much as I do. LOL :)
WOW!! This is really awesome Emily! Seriously, for you to put in the work into Google sheets and share this tool, awesome work! I'm definitely going to use this!
Nice. I just canceled my game pass subscription and told myself I wouldn't spend any money on games this year and finally play the hundreds of games I already own. This is a killer tool!
Really appreciate you making content focused around slaying the ever-growing monster that is a lot of our backlogs. I also found that using a paper and pen bullet journal for gaming has really helped me set up plans for what to play and give me a chance to write reviews before I sit down to write a video script to keep track of my feelings and thoughts while I am playing. It has really helped provide me with a little extra something to inspire me to finish games. Well, that was until the monster RPG month that February turned out to be. Persona 3 Reload and GranBlue Fantasy Relink are going to push my backlog off a bit for sure. Thanks for creating these tools for all of us who struggle with having no direction in what to play!
The tool is pretty neat thank you. I have a huge backlog which consists of Pc and Switch games, that used to make me feel stressed to finish everything( yes I know its not a problem, its more of a thing that bugs me). What I found helpfull is adopting the mentallity that collecting games and playing games are two different hobbies, that coexist but in general are somewhat irrelevant to each other. The collection feeds my gaming habit and not the other way around. I have the games I want and when the time is right I will play them. I know I will eventually start Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and when the time comes it will be available to me. It is not a job that I need to fill a quota.
This is genius. Getting older and having less time to play video games makes tackling the backlog such a chore. I even have PS3 games I haven't touched since I bought them.
Thanks for the advice and tool. Personally my more recent strategy has been this; No matter how many games you have on your backlog narrow it down to 50. Then 25, then do a top 10, write those down. Then pick your top 5, then of those 5, pick 1 to play. Once that game is finished pick another from your top 10. Don’t buy a new game or reply an old classic before you finished your current backlog game. (I know easier said than done) Also when I’m having a hard time Deciding I’ll just go with the game that is most critically acclaimed. These strategies have helped me cut my backlog down. Thanks for the video.
Glad to see this. I'm not sure if you have ever watched Sean Seanson's videos, but he uses a wheel to dictate which games are decided for the video and I used that to end up playing a game when I was a bit slumped (it ended up being Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2).
Copying this from the previous upload but my strategy for a Google Sheets backlog is the following: 1. First sheet is a general list called "Unbeaten Video Games" 2. Subsequent sheets are used to group multiple games from various series together like Zelda or Kingdom Hearts. 3. The games on each sheet are listed out in alphabetical order. 4. If I'm currently playing a game, I highlight its name green. This helps me prioritize which games I should get back to. 5. If I finish a game, I remove the game from the list. 6. Besides Name, there are also columns for Platform and Notes. Might add an Estimated Hours column in the future. I think that's everything. You'd be surprised at how many games I've got highlighted green right now. 😂
Thanks so much for sharing. I might give this a shot. I also often feel paralyzed by the sheer amount of backlog I have across systems (both consoles and handhelds). Back half of last year, I started to track manually what games I wanted to finish and what genre, etc. ...I finished maybe about four? lol But it did feel good to see ANY of my games checked off as completed. But having a randomizer might make this even more fun to tackle. (I also started using How Long To Beat too. One reason why, is I have a tendency to drag out games and take waayy longer than it should to at least complete story mode. Figured this would be a good way to check myself.
Love the concept of the random draw, very cool. I don’t finish 90% games and don’t try that can help - only finish games that I can’t stop playing (10/10 games basically, not many), anything less never gets finished. I actually find most games start to get redundant after about 60% completion, unless the story is a 10 it’s much easier to move on. And devs who make ~10-20 hour games are the best ❤️. That’s the sweet spot for me.
The other ones you made I won't use as I feel I'm pretty good budgeting without a tracker, but I'm favoriting this one. I tried to do favorite it last night but the video just disappeared, glad it's back. Whenever I get done with a game and decide to play something new, I'll spend such a long time in front of my collection and then I'll just end up not picking up anything, so this is going to be such a massive help. It's really due to my trying to get through my remaining modern backlog and disappointment of the average modern game that gives me so much trouble choosing something new. If I was to choose one word that described the most popular modern games it'd be padding or bloat. I like a lot of content, but modern gaming, even most indie games just feel more content than quality. Like most of your 4/10 or 5/10 average game rather than a great game. Maybe it's the string of all these 4/10 or 5/10s in a row that I'm just getting or maybe that's really how the average game is getting, and I'm actually including games like Ghost of Tsushima which I just feel is a very run of the mill watered down Arkham game mixed with a poor man's Nioh and 5-20 minutes of aimless open world point A to B between everything you do, it's just not fun to me. Feels more like work to actually get to the point that I can do something that is ultimately unrewarding. And you can add Immortals Fenyx Rising and Ghostwire Tokyo to these mediocre games with an unbelievable amount of padding. Then there's procedural games. No offense to you or anyone who likes Hades and all these other procedural games, but I can immediately see on my first run just how repetitive everything is. Everything is random by design instead of a well crafted world, and then dying only to start back over from the very beginning? The thing I don't like about these procedural games is having to play 30 minutes to get back to the part that I need practice at. In Ninja Gaiden 2 The Dark Sword of Chaos on the NES, even though I finished the game, I still played it again because it's a great game, the game didn't force mt to keep replaying it to pad out the length of the game. I wanted to play it again and I think developers of these procedural games should start making a single player game with procedural modes additional. If your game is good, people will want to replay it rather than forcing it onto people. Most games now days are just padding with little real content. Like I said, it'd be great if these had single player modes that were hand crafted and then added a procedural mode after the fact for people who wanted more of their favorite game, but there's little hand crafted in these games when they're procedural from the get go and I can easily see that every run, the only change is the biomes and even then you can see how they're created to feel different and they really don't. To me, the games feel more repetitive than if I was to replay the same NES game over and over again, the same exact game that's hand crafted rather than the level randomizer that looks mostly the same.
thanks for sharing this Emily! I too have decided to tackle the backlog this year. I only preordered one game and hopefully I can go thru this list. I hope you been well! looking forward to future videos. :)
My pleasure, and I wish you luck on your backlog this year! I have just a handful of preorders... and hoping there won't be too many surprises this year that catch me off guard 😅😂
This tool is definitely very handy and I think it will be really helpful for those that also struggle with choice paralysis like you. Personally, I don’t think I have the same problem but I’ve found just having a spreadsheet of my backlog very helpful ever since I got the idea from another video on the subject a year ago.
Glad to hear that you've found spreadsheets to be helpful with with getting to your backlog! The randomizer is also sort of a fun way to approach the backlog if one desires, but definitely not a necessity!
Hey Orba. Truly THANK YOU again, i spent the last few hours using your tool and tracked all my games :) I watched a ton of how to beat backlog titles yourube videos before, but you are the FIRST who’s not merely clickbait 😂 APPRECIATE YOU 👌👏🙏
I added a “Randomize by Ownership” so i can randomise by physical or digital owned games :) maybe please add that to help others who copy your google docs, or ping me so ill message u my google sheets u can just copy and paste the formulas etc
Your Randomize implementation is very clever! I have a spreadsheet of all of my games (not just the backlog) that's over 1,000 and I had a field for each entry generating a random number (Then I would either sort or select the highest). It works, but any time I touch anything in the page all numbers are regenerated and I hear my CPU fan kick off for a few moments lol. This is clever and just crunches the numbers it needs to, when it needs to. A huge improvement over crunching thousands and sorting them every time I touch any field in the spreadsheet. Thanks! I already have all the same data entered, system, HLTB, rating/priority, and also the game's state (Unplayed, unbeaten, beaten but would like to play more sometime, beaten and done, retired) so implementing this will be a lot of fun. :3
Yeah this randomizing method also helps keep your random pulls locked until you hit reset, which I appreciate! Hope incorporating this element into your spreadsheets is a smooth transition!
It is! I don't have to understand it completely for it to work, but would you be able to explain this portion a bit? (Grabbed from the random by platform == PC portion) LARGE(IF(Backlog!C2:C=A7,ROW(Backlog!C2:C)-ROW(Backlog!C2)+1),INT(RAND()*COUNTIF(Backlog!C2:C,A7)+1))) I understand it as: Take the largest value from: 1. If platform is PC: Return Number of first data row - first row in sheet + 1. In most cases, this seems like it would return 1. Is it some safety check if there are no matching entries or something? or 2. Random number stuff, count number of entries labeled PC (Add 1), multiply by a random number between 0 and 1. I assume the +1 is to make sure you never get 0 as part of the round down. I think I get the second part, but I'm not quite sure what #1 is doing?
Gonna be honest, I referred to this example for how to randomly select a cell based on specific criteria: statisticalpoint.com/excel-random-selection-with-criteria/ . I only code in statistical programs like SAS & R, so the syntax they use in Sheets seems a bit strange & not very straight forward.
Haha, no worries. I'm a programmer too, but definitely not a Google Sheets programmer so it's pretty difficult for me to follow as well. ^^; It could probably be traced by putting each portion in its own cell to see what all the individual numbers are... But if it works, it works. :)
Wow, thanks for the awesome tools! I used to stressed out with my backlog (more like my spending behaviour), hence I documented it, from there I can I really feel the satisfaction of playing it and finishing it, plus I have fun while I was document it too! I know, it will still be backlog and perhaps more in the future, but at least I have that sense of achievements and I am enjoying it! :)
Thanks for the video, I have some similar things in a couple of spreadsheets myself, most of my backlog gets handled by other sites like Backloggery which does most of your randomization (they don't have genres which kinda sucks but otherwise you can do all the rest). But this video did make me realize that there are some neat things you can do in spreadsheets and gave me some thoughts, not sure if it's enough to leave sites like backloggery behind, because it's just easier to use an existing tool. But it does give me pause to reconsider.
Backloggery is definitely an option to continue using if you find it helpful! I personally prefer spreadsheets like this because it gives me a bit more control. But they share similar functions.
Wow!!! this is super elaborate, thanks for sharing it with us Emily, I usually order my backlog games by the time it takes to beat them according to how long to beat, I try to knock off the shorter games first
My pleasure! I usually like to mix the varying game lengths to help with burnout tbh. But if knocking out the shorter games first works for you that's great! And a great way to get more games finished.
Thanks for sharing this tool, definitely going to help me get through the backlog, now for the daunting task of entering the backlog into the spreadsheet 😂
Super neat. Thank you for taking the time to share this! Hopefully this summer is a little slower in terms of releases than Feb and March, so I can finish my 2023 games 😅
I hope you are right. This year feels very front loaded for now. Hopefully, Sony and Nintendo show some cool stuff for the second half. It looks like Xbox has a road map, but those games aren't my cup of tea. If it's slow, ok by me. Still finishing Xenoblade 3. That game is a full time job lol
This is such a cool idea and I like having it pick a random game! Also in terms of how my backlog is going... I just bought a PS3 and a good amount of games. No I have a whole other generation to play haha.
this looks great, I already made my copy and will see what use I can give it, because I already have an excel file with all my backlog and some kind of priority list of games that i want to play, but not as advanced as yours :P
Thank you so much for your advice and the spreadsheets! I'm going to give the randomizer a shot! My backlog has been overwhelming me for a while, and I think it would be a great tool to help me along. There's too many games I haven't played yet, and games that I want to revisit to see if I really want to hold onto them or not.
Smart move for sure. My backlog is massive but I also found the blessing of starting so many games is I can easily finish a decent amount quickly. I will prolly use the randomizer as well !
This is really organised, I might need to get on this! I have a huge backlog too but since 2022, I've been manually writing down the games i've finished. I also like to write a mini review of the game so that when I look back I can get a good feel of what I did/didn't like about the game.
Awesome job with creating this spreadsheet! I've been considering just even documenting what games I have on which platforms regardless of the backlog, but this would be way more useful! Unfortunately I'm sitting at 25 consoles not including my PCs with 1000s of games, so I may need to build a robot to catalog all of them for me as that's just too much work lol. Still, very awesome work & thanks for sharing it with us all!
This is awesome! I kind of did something similar in notion. I think I'm going to try and introduce some of the data elements in there though. Would be good to see how long each stage a game stays in a different stage in my backlog. I have (in progress, paused, cancelled etc). I love this kind of nerdery, so you have earned my sub!
I would be cool to make a spreadsheet with the theme: "Expectations vs reality backlog" in which you can compare games you thought you tackle in 2024 vs the ones you actually beat, in order to know if you deviated too much from your gaming expectations during the year.
One of the ways I visualise my backlog was when I moved out of my parents place, I only took the games in my backlog. When I finish them, I move them back home and it means every game I do buy goes to my current shelf.
Great video. I use Backloggd for the most part as it lets you create custom lists. I created a list for 2024 goals, and I can add titles to it and move them up or down on the list like a kanban board. What I appreciate about yours is the ability to give titles a priority.
I was inspired to log my library and quantify my backlog because of this video. And i knew it was bad going in, but after a preliminary just raw quantities check there is a very real possibility thanks to PS Plus, Game pass and humble bundle that my backlog is in 4 digit range. Even without those services it probably is. My steam and PS5 libraries alone combine for over 1500 and I'm sure my switch is over 200 and that's not counting emulation on my PC. For context on a good year I'll finish 5 games, on a typical year 2 maybe 3. I'm still going to see it through because I'm curious. But the immensity of it is coming into view. 😅
I feel you there! One of the reasons why I try to limit the systems I play games on, otherwise it'll likely get way more out of hand than it already is haha. Though I've been toying with the idea of investing in a good gaming PC within the next year or two... so I can see my enormous backlog easily doubling quickly 😅
@@orbalology i would highly recommend getting a good gaming PC. Brace yourself for the expense though, i hit an Aurora 11 3 or 4 years ago and it ran me $3K. For emulation and game archiving alone is worth the price of entry imo, plus modding is a beautiful thing. Without my PC i wouldn't have been able to play crisis core on the big screen, until reunion came out anyways. I just always make sure to buy the games i emulate (when possible), but yeah, it inflates the library a ton. And it's way easier to buy a game then play one especially with steam sales and humble bundle. I recommend it highly, but proceed with caution lol
Great video..I like the backlog random generator tool. Cause having a huge collection and a crazy backlog this would be useful. When I want to play a game I have trouble deciding on what to play. Cause I really want to focus on getting through the backlog. Thanks for sharing.
Greta video, thanks for sharing. I am wanting to make it a priority for 2024 to play through games in my backlog. I also like to play on a variety of systems in different genres so this will be very useful.
Thanks for this, I'll give it go! Beat 4 games this month and I'm playing my fifth! Which is very unlike me cause I get bored easily and never finish. I did, jedi survivor, dead space, plague tale and last of 2 remaster. Currently playing the quarry, loving it! Doubt I'll complete any more after cause persona3 on Friday and ff7 at end of month. Bad times!!
I've decided to approach it by setting a price threshold and if I see a copy below that price, I get it. It goes against my natural tendency to want to do things in order but I save a lot more money that way lol
Absolutely incredible, layout presentation and idea your so smart and very very creative absolutely lovely idea but my backlog is absolutely huge it’s the time and place to game and work and activities hu 😮never get dined before I’m 40 lol 😂 hope all is well Emily great stuff 👏👏👏👏😊
Thanks for this video! I'd honestly almost given up on tackling my backlog! As a fellow game collector, I keep snatching up games left and right when they're on sale and it's become a bit of a problem lol.
I think playing & collecting can be two separate hobbies! There is definitely an intersection, but if you find enjoyment adding to the library I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. It's all about balance in the end :)
I have a pretty clear list of games I am playing at the start of this year. I am doing another play through of FF7 Remake and then go straight to FF7 Rebirth so at least I know what I am playing for now. After that, who knows 😂. I might have to use your tool afterwards. I would say that now that I’m older and have less time, I don’t force myself to finish games if I’m not enjoying it. I used to feel bad because it feels like I wasted money so I have to “get my money’s worth” but I just don’t really care anymore. I also like playing two games at a time so that I don’t get burned out or give up from the pressure of having to stick with one game and finishing it. So what I do is usually play one game on a portable device like Analogue Pocket or Switch and I usually play short sessions of this in bed and then I have another game on the regular TV consoles
Yeah I don't think anyone needs to feel obligated to finish/complete games. I maybe should have emphasized more but games I abandon or feel like I played enough I would also put into the 'Finished' tab so to mark it off my backlog and work on something else that I'm more excited about. There are also plenty of games that you can never complete (i.e. multiplayer, simulators, etc.). I also like to play a few titles at a given time, often a JRPG and a VN that I alternate :)
I saw you had Yakuza like a Dragon on your backlog list. I'm a huge fan of that series. Been playing those games for a few months now. I plan on beating the entire series by the end of this year. I also highly recommend the Judgment series as well which is a spin off from the Yakuza series.
With my friends we have a "dashboard" with the currently beated games for every month and by the end of year the person with most finished games get a free game purchased by the others Is kinda a sane competiton so far helps to reduce the backlog
@@orbalology It definitely will! I think the 1 column I want to add to it is whether or not I already started the game. I have a terrible habit of starting games and then getting sidetracked by a new release. If I could throw all those into their own category it might help me get some of those out of the way.
Loved your videos on how to better budget and to track my gaming addiction. Now I might even get rid of the dreaded backlog 😅 thanks! We need so much more transparency to lower the fomo as well as the jealous when building your own game collection. Do you think one big combined spread sheet would be feasible so that a new game will be automatically added to the backlog and deducted from my budget? Props to you to re-upload the video because you were not happy with the quality! Happy gaming from Germany
Minor correction in spreadsheet for the formula that generates random games by length. I no longer think of my backlog as a weight on my shoulders, but rather a good friend who is never, ever, ever going away…
The backlog offers a large array of possibilities, to continuously keep us entertained :)

Thanks! Best of luck with putting together your spreadsheet, and hope it helps with your backlog progress!
Check out Backloggd
Great idea! I swear i spend more time staring at my games, trying to decide what to play next. This will save so much time and less headache since decision-making is hard.
I hope this randomizer tool works for you! Decision/choice paralysis can be the worst sometimes.
This…this is beautiful😭 I love the randomizer and the bonus stats! I will definitely be using this, it’s great and honestly just what I need to keep track of all of my games! Thanks for making this, Emily!!
Thanks Alex! I would love to see how your stats go towards the end of the year if you feel open to sharing :)

I have to say that I loved this video. I was an avid gamer and now the backlog is a real challenge for me with two kids and a job with long hours. We are back in school when we steal another person homeworks ☺️ This will come in handy, thanks for sharing.
I love how organized you are with your backlog! I try to be organized too and it really helps!
Thanks! Yes spreadsheets are great to keep organize :)
Glad you found these videos fun at least! And if this method doesn't work for games maybe it can be applied for something else instead :)
58 games in my backlog tells me I need to stop buying games even at a discount which is funny cuz there's like 30 games on my wishlist 😅
Sometimes keeping it simple is the best way to go about it! Thanks for sharing ☺️
Ima use this for movies too
Good luck this year to everyone with the backlog 👍
Glad to see another spreadsheet enthusiast. My coworker makes fun of me because I suggest using tbem for alot of things lol
Personally my more recent strategy has been this;
No matter how many games you have on your backlog narrow it down to 50. Then 25, then do a top 10, write those down. Then pick your top 5, then of those 5, pick 1 to play. Once that game is finished pick another from your top 10. Don’t buy a new game or reply an old classic before you finished your current backlog game. (I know easier said than done)
Also when I’m having a hard time Deciding I’ll just go with the game that is most critically acclaimed. These strategies have helped me cut my backlog down.
Thanks for the video.
I am a big of fan of your speadsheets videos ! I'm copying not to use but to learn a thing or two. 😉
Glad to see this.
I'm not sure if you have ever watched Sean Seanson's videos, but he uses a wheel to dictate which games are decided for the video and I used that to end up playing a game when I was a bit slumped (it ended up being Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2).
Oh no I haven't. But it's a similar concept! Maybe a little more fun if it's a physical wheel you're spinning 😄
I absolutely love how you share your google docs with us! These are going to be a huge help this year!
I'm glad to hear they've been helpful so far! Hopefully they'll continue to do so for the rest of the year :)
You are so clever! I’ll be happy to finish 10 games this year. I might use the randomizer tool you built or something like it
Excellent video! Things for sharing the randomizer.
Copying this from the previous upload but my strategy for a Google Sheets backlog is the following:
1. First sheet is a general list called "Unbeaten Video Games"
Thanks for taking the trouble to share again!
Thanks so much for sharing. I might give this a shot. I also often feel paralyzed by the sheer amount of backlog I have across systems (both consoles and handhelds). Back half of last year, I started to track manually what games I wanted to finish and what genre, etc. ...I finished maybe about four? lol
But it did feel good to see ANY of my games checked off as completed. But having a randomizer might make this even more fun to tackle. (I also started using How Long To Beat too. One reason why, is I have a tendency to drag out games and take waayy longer than it should to at least complete story mode. Figured this would be a good way to check myself.
Great video as always! We basically have the same spreadsheet haha. It's always satisfying to mark a game as finished.
Thanks for sharing, Emily! Your videos are great. My backlog is around 150 games at the moment...
I haven't counted what my full backlog list adds up to yet (I'm somewhat scared to 😂). But hopefully we can make some great progress this year!
Mine's about this as well.
Hey Orba. Truly THANK YOU again, i spent the last few hours using your tool and tracked all my games :)
I watched a ton of how to beat backlog titles yourube videos before, but you are the FIRST who’s not merely clickbait 😂 APPRECIATE YOU 👌👏🙏
I added a “Randomize by Ownership” so i can randomise by physical or digital owned games :) maybe please add that to help others who copy your google docs, or ping me so ill message u my google sheets u can just copy and paste the formulas etc
(Grabbed from the random by platform == PC portion)
LARGE(IF(Backlog!C2:C=A7,ROW(Backlog!C2:C)-ROW(Backlog!C2)+1),INT(RAND()*COUNTIF(Backlog!C2:C,A7)+1)))
I understand it as:
Take the largest value from:
1. If platform is PC: Return Number of first data row - first row in sheet + 1. In most cases, this seems like it would return 1. Is it some safety check if there are no matching entries or something?
or
This is so cool! Will definitely be using this as I recently just bought a PS5 and I have a massive backlog of ps4 games thanks to ps+ extra 😭 🙏.
Love this topic! Thanks for making the spreadsheet.
Wow!!! this is super elaborate, thanks for sharing it with us Emily, I usually order my backlog games by the time it takes to beat them according to how long to beat, I try to knock off the shorter games first
My pleasure!
My pleasure! I recommend putting on some good albums or a podcast. Data entry can be quite therapeutic at times :)
Thank you for making the spreadsheet and sharing it with us!
Super neat. Thank you for taking the time to share this! Hopefully this summer is a little slower in terms of releases than Feb and March, so I can finish my 2023 games 😅
I have a feeling this year is going to be similarly jammed packed as last year. But hopefully not 😂😅
I hope you are right. This year feels very front loaded for now. Hopefully, Sony and Nintendo show some cool stuff for the second half. It looks like Xbox has a road map, but those games aren't my cup of tea. If it's slow, ok by me. Still finishing Xenoblade 3. That game is a full time job lol
The backlog will always be an issue. This is awesome! Thanks for sharing this with all of us.
The nice thing about a backlog is we'll never get bored! And thanks Steph! Hope you find this tool useful too :)
Awesome video! Here's to everyone putting a dent in their backlogs this year!
Also best TH-camr in the game collecting niche!
helping attack my backlog and spreadsheets? instant like. Great vid as always, thanks for all the detailed breakdowns!
I hope the randomizer works out for you! Hope it can help you with determining what to keep & part with in your collection as well :)
I’m actively growing my backlog in anticipation of media switches to digital only - Plenty of physical media to keep me happy for years 😂
Commenting for support, thank you!
Love that you pronounce the Ts in “button”.
As a primarily nintendo gamer I think this will be a good year to catch up on my backlog!
just sliding into the comments after watching the original upload🥳
Thanks Milla ☺️
Smart move for sure. My backlog is massive but I also found the blessing of starting so many games is I can easily finish a decent amount quickly. I will prolly use the randomizer as well !
Best of luck with your backlog progress this year - and hope the randomizer tool comes in handy :)
This is really organised, I might need to get on this!
I have a huge backlog too but since 2022, I've been manually writing down the games i've finished. I also like to write a mini review of the game so that when I look back I can get a good feel of what I did/didn't like about the game.
Thanks! If you decide to use this template I hope it helps with your backlog progression!
This is an awesome tool! I think I might use this. Thank you for taking the time to make this!
OMG I love making spreadsheet programs, this is brilliant
Thanks! This was fun to research & put together, as I don't really program much in Sheets.
One of the ways I visualise my backlog was when I moved out of my parents place, I only took the games in my backlog. When I finish them, I move them back home and it means every game I do buy goes to my current shelf.
It's nice to have some extra storage options available!
Gonna have to lock up my credit card for a long while so I can tackle my backlog. I'm also going to borrow this tool for sure.
Great video. I use Backloggd for the most part as it lets you create custom lists. I created a list for 2024 goals, and I can add titles to it and move them up or down on the list like a kanban board. What I appreciate about yours is the ability to give titles a priority.
Backloggd is a good resource! I like how customizable google sheets is, for whatever reason it makes it a little more fun for me to keep up with it :)
This is fantastic - thank you for sharing! Love the Excel wizardry done here 😁
Aww thanks! Hope you find it useful with your backlog :)
Thanks Emily for this tool now i can start my backlog 😉
Greta video, thanks for sharing. I am wanting to make it a priority for 2024 to play through games in my backlog. I also like to play on a variety of systems in different genres so this will be very useful.
Glad to hear, best of luck with making progress on your backlog this year! :)
February is not making this backlog thing easy lol thank you for the spreadsheet!!
My pleasure! Hoping the rest of the year will have fewer new release distractions, but we shall see!
Oh my god this looks like so much fun. Will definitely be trying this out! Thank you!
Hope you find it helpful!
Loving the current Spreadsheet Arc!
Finally a treatment for backlog anxiety!
Well this Monday just got a little better. Thanks, Emily :3
Enjoy the rest of your Monday & week! 😊
You are incredible. If only I could be even a bit more organized. Really interesting video. Thank you.
This is an amazing ideia!! I love it and will definetly try it!! Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure! I hope this method ends up working for you too this year 😁
Great tool, subscribed. Looking forward to building it out.
Hope you find the process helpful!
Good work on the spreadsheet. Can’t wait to use it.
Hope they serve you well!
I saw you had Yakuza like a Dragon on your backlog list. I'm a huge fan of that series. Been playing those games for a few months now. I plan on beating the entire series by the end of this year. I also highly recommend the Judgment series as well which is a spin off from the Yakuza series.
With my friends we have a "dashboard" with the currently beated games for every month and by the end of year the person with most finished games get a free game purchased by the others
Is kinda a sane competiton so far helps to reduce the backlog
I am hoping to use this spreadsheet for 2025. Do you also have a spreadsheet that you use for your collection?
Keep up the great work!
This is awesome! Thank you for creating and sharing this, already made my own copy and beginning to edit it.
Hope the spreadsheet helps with chipping away at your backlog this year!
@@orbalology It definitely will! I think the 1 column I want to add to it is whether or not I already started the game. I have a terrible habit of starting games and then getting sidetracked by a new release. If I could throw all those into their own category it might help me get some of those out of the way.
great job on the fresh content and clear presentation method, keep it up!
Whoa, super cool spreadsheet solution! I'm gonna try it!
Hope the tool helps with making some good progress on the backlog this year!
Here for the algorithm so we kick its butt
Thank you 🥰
Loved your videos on how to better budget and to track my gaming addiction.
Not too sure what the easiest way to go about combining all the spreadsheets, but I'm sure there probably is some solution!
OMGSH!!!!!! This is awesome!!!!!! You are incredible!!! Thank youuuuuu
