Absolutely flawless pronounciation of "sisään" (come in). This native Finnish speaker is impressed.
Yes, especially since Scandinavian letters are usually difficult for foreigners
@@promealiens9659A proper language learning book would most likely have the IPA transcriptions, which show the exact phonetic pronunciation of each word.
It shouldn't be too difficult for a genius like Sheldon to read the system and pronounce according to it, since that's exactly what the system is for.
Also, Finnish is classified as a Nordic language, not a Scandinavian one.
@@ergot1803 Ä , Ö and Å in Finnish are called Scandinavian letters (a bit misleading) because they appear in some Nordic languages, such as Finnish, Swedish and Northern Sami. It does not take a position on which language group one belongs to.
@@promealiens9659 Well would you look at that, didn't know.
However, it's a bit of a bad term to use in English, as it isn't a term that really exists in English, and is historically a bit misleading in English as well, unlike in Finnish.
It's a bit like calling the North Germanic / Scandinavian languages (which do not contain Finnish) the Nordic languages, as they are called that in Swedish, Danish and Norwegian (nordiske/nordiska språk/sprog), but not in English.
These letters are presumably called Scandinavian letters in Finnish due to their introduction to Finland from there. However, Ä and Ö are not Scandinavian in origin, but German.
Therefore, only Å can really be called a Scandinavian letter in English.
@@ergot1803 Ä, Å and Ö have entered the Finnish language from Sweden and also into the Sámi languages (Å may have entered Northern Sámi from Norway). Norwegian and Danish do not have Ä and Ö. Based on Sweden alone, those three letters have been called Scandinavian letters, and Sweden and Norway were in union with each other from 1814 to 1905, the time when the national spirit was awakened in Finland under Russia.

Sight-reading Finnish when you don't know the pronunciation rules is always funny to watch. You can mess things up pretty bad :D
The amount of Finns under this video is amazing, impressive and hilarious.
That dictionary is too small for the Finnish language xD

That would add well, maybe, a shitton more pages and books to have.... so yes... And that is just how its supposed to be speaken... To speak naturally, like a local, you need to know also shitton of non sense variations and old retired ways to say thinks. No complite books are made on that degree, bc no rules on how its supposed to be sayed. Sorry for really bad english, not stronk subject in here finland... And also... i'm from finland and i just love when people from other countries try to speak finnish :) idk it's just so interesting and funny. oh and i also love sheldon he's such a great character
It's funny because I'm of Indian background but grew up in Canada. So I know Hindi and know what Raj is saying. I also know how Canadians (or Americans overall) would speak another language. Also, my girlfriend is Finnish, so I kinda speak like Sheldon when I try, haha.
ohh that's cool. i would love to be bilingual, would make my life much easier. thank god they start teaching us english when we're like seven years old so that we have enough time to actually learn to speak the language properly. of course it helps that english is used pretty much everywhere, so it's all around us all the time. and we also have to study swedish because with finnish it's an official language in finland. although most finnish people can't actually speak swedish. that's probably bc we start studying it when we're like thirteen and many of us don't learn a language if we start studying it that late. and also because no one really likes studying it ... i personally think it's nice to study different languages. i can also speak russian and i think next year i'm gonna take spanish or french or maybe even both :)
and btw i think it's cool that your girlfriend's finnish. i would love to date someone foreigner in the future :)
elli Being bilingual/multilingual is really helpful if you know the right languages in the right place. I think most people that don't learn English since they are young, still manage to get by it because of the wide exposure on TV, etc. It's so cool that in Finland you learn Finnish and Swedish. Kudos to you for knowing it! My girlfriend also can speak a bit of Swedish but not fluently, though she did learn it in school. She also took German as her other language. She went to Germany as an exchange. She's not fluent in that either though. She also speaks Spanish (better than Swedish and German, I think). It's the same as how in Canada, unless you take French since you are little, it's difficult to learn and communicate with it. It's always cool to learn a new language and their culture though. Good luck with your education and learning! Knowledge is power :)
I find the Finnish culture fascinating. She opened my mind about how Saunas are actually Finnish. Most people don't know that or don't think about it. It's really cool what you learn when you meet people of other cultures, so I encourage you with that! :)
lazywagon yeahhh i so wish english was my first language. but it's great that english is so easy to learn since it's everywhere; tv, music, social media etc. yeah i don't speak swedish fluently either but i think i would survive a short holiday in sweden with my current language skills. i would love to take german too! but not anytime soon, i gotta learn these languages first. don't wanna mess them up too much. ohhh i really wanna go to some country as an exchange student, that would be so cool! if only i'll have enough money and my parents will let me. haha saunas! it's nice that you know that. i feel like the people who live close to finland, in sweden, norway or russia for example, know that saunas are finnish. but i guess it's not that common information in many other countries. i'm very interested in other cultures and languages and i hope that when i grow up i get to travel a lot and hopefully move abroad. new york would be my dream place to live in. i really love big cities. but i also love warm sunny beaches and old little towns ...almost everything!
elli I think it is quite cool that you aren't of English descent. It's always interesting to know of other cultures to those that speak English as a first language. I'm sure you will get the hang of many languages as you have a keen interest in it. I'm very sure you will succeed. Don't give up on it. It's always handy to have knowledge especially if you are into travelling. It is good to go one at a time though, or else it will get jumbled up. If it is possible, you should surely do exchange as it serves as a good experience and is a great learning opportunity and new opening to the world. New York is great for anyone used to the city life or anyone that loves that style and I'm sure you would fit right in if that was your thing :) You'll get to know your interests more and more as you mature and get older and older. I'm only 23, but still have lots to learn about myself even. And sometimes I think that I like one thing but may like something else better! So hang in there, and work for your dreams to come true!!
Fun fact: We finns *COMPLETELY* lose our shit when Finland gets mentoined in outside media.
Same goes for us Canadians. Honestly it doesn't even have to be positive. As long as they (American media) acknowledge our existence, we're happy.
Be happy all of you aren't here especially now the stupidity and braindead idiots running around is insane!
Norwegians, too. Despite having virtually no internationally recognised brands, like Nokia or Angry birds, it seems to me we are mentioned more than Finns. Well, that is if you don't count "fjords" a brand. 😉
@@Henrik46 many americans have no clue that either of those brands are finnish 😅
Small country syndrome. In New Zealand we used to have that a lot before LOTR put us 'on the map' (so to speak). Not as common now.

Sheldon's attempt to pronounce "rypäleet" (grapes) sounded more similar to "ripuli" (diarrhea).
I'm disappointed he didn't try to pronounce "Jyväskylä". Emphasis on "try".
You deserve more likes, I dodn't know about this finnish inside joke.
jimday666 "Jyväskylä" (the name of a Finnish city) is a long word so a native English speaker would probably put the stress on the wrong syllable. It has the Y and J sounds: Y is a vowel that doesn't exist in English and J is pronounced like the Y in "yellow". The Ä sound does exist in English (the A in "cat") and a native English speaker might get it right by accident. All in all, a native English speaker would probably completely mangle the word's pronunciation on their first try to the point that a Finn wouldn't recognize it. Sadly, all the non-native speakers I've heard say the word are familiar with its correct pronunciation.

that sisään was perfectly pronounced. usually it's hard to learn the letter ä and ö . i'm from finland
i know this a really old comment but ä is actually quite easy to learn since the sound does exist in english in words like at, that, bat. I think the hard ones for a foreigner to learn would be y and ö.
y and ö exist in Hungarian and Turkish and German and Norwegian and i believe Dutch also…they are not entirely difficult sounds…Arabic ع and ح have got to be harder!

Seems more like they're laughing at Sheldon's ridiculous way of saying the words (not his pronunciation, the weird voice he goes into) than the words themselves. They start laughing before he says "rypaleet" when his face goes all funny.
@@Scottiii95 they actually picked it because its one of the hardest languages to learn, mandarin is more widely spoken and stereotipycal
1. It's a laugh track. That's just the echo of dead people.
2. They think it sounds funny.
I'm sure Finnish sounds funny to lots of people. Different languages do. And that's ok. Let's not pretended our brother nation Estonians don't sound funny to us, because our words are so similar. Words like "nahkhiir" still get a chuckle from me. It's a benevolent laugh, because with our numbers being so few, it's good to know there's an almost similar language in the world with us.
