    there is not a single food influencer on Earth that could ever come close to conveying, through social media, the equivalent of Pete Wells' masterfully written takedown of Guy Fieri's Time Square restaurant. That was the food review equivalent of death by a thousand cuts. When done well, old school food critics still have a place in the modern restaurant industry.

    It's almost like influencers are a problem and we should stop giving them so much power and attention. For example, the moment MatPat figured out that any theorists were causing real world people trouble while trying to solve a "call to arms" puzzle, he shut it down. I'd say it depends on what kind of person they are. It's like getting recommendations on makeup or skin care from a person who owns their own brand, and actually is a part of the process. They know what is what and can tell you what is worth it and what isn't. If they constantly talk bad about anything but their own brand then it's probably not a reliable source.

      it goes both ways. Pros: they have experience making them "experts", it is just a matter of if they remain in the bounds of their expertise. Cons: they are incentivised to trash local competition for profit and use their platform to advertise themselves.
      Context matters, but i can agree with the sentiment in a context-less void. Reviewing stuff far away (multiple states away) from their hub of business is usually a good sign, up until you notice a pattern between negative reviews and new branches.

    keith lee is one of the few food critics i listen to. he keeps his orders anonymous, orders a variety of food, and will even go back to certain locations to follow up. Yeah, I don't think using Keith as an example here was the right move. Whenever he doesn't quite like a food he does say, that it doesn't represent the entirety of their food and that they couls have just had a bad day. If a restaurant goes under it's, as you say, due to the owner's or staff's actions. Like that one where the owner refused to share the huge tip that was specifically given to be shared. But of course it's more convenient to ignore that in this video
      Edit: just saw he mentioned the tip story. But still, it's not exactly Keith's fault. The owner kinda brought it upon herself by also reacting and replying the way she did.

    • @metronicmagician1816

      @@megatronusorionpax4900Keith Lee is more here to talk about how the concept of food influencer is problematic instead of it being just on the influencer themselves. By all accounts he is doing it right, but like mentioned in the video the fan backlash for that one person who took the entire tip bled into a whole other company is a perfect example of why even the most wholesome of food influencers can be problematic. That said Keith is very much a best case scenario, and it’s a shame there really aren’t many other food influencers like him.

    This is why I appreciate Mike Chen/Strictly Dumpling as a food reviewer. He is well aware of his influence, and makes it a point to not post negative reviews of small businesses, as the last thing he wants to do is ruin someone's livelihood to bolster his own. the only time you'll ever see him post a megative review is if the food is coming from a major chain, as his opinion isn't going to do any actual harm in that case. this is the sort of thing you'll often see if he's checking out stuff from Costco, trader Joe's, or a major restaurant/resort chain. Even then, I love that regardless of the palce he visits, he gets numerous things from the menu most times, to give a better idea of what htey serve and what's worth trying out. This is something I would love to see more food reviewers nowadays doing, as everyone involved wins.

      I’m sorry. But for me it’s the same for any reviewer for anything- movies, food, cars. If a reviewer always has high scores and almost never bad reviews. I’m not trusting them. Specifically because they’re trying to be conscious and not exactly honest with their review.

    • @SgtSupaman
      @SgtSupaman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      @@steamsmith2356 , you just need to keep the scale of their reviews in mind in those cases. For instance, if you know it is someone that is cautious with their reviewing (trying to keep it to the higher end), then you know a mid rating must've been fairly bad. People always judge things on their own scale anyway. What you might consider a 3/10 could be someone else's 6/10. As some who spent almost 15 years (2002-2015) rating and reviewing beers online. I learned taste is subjective, and people can have biases and prejudices towards a style of beer. One of the reasons why I stopped reviewing beers is because I found myself being more judgmental when reviewing beers. Just to keep it out of the 80th percentile. Professional beer reviews have subtle ways of saying they did not like a beer. They say they have a scale between 1-100. They never really give a beer a score below 75 or 80. So, the scale is really 75-100, or 1-25. A beer with a score of 81, actually has a 1 or a 6. The second reason why I stopped reviewing beers personally is I ran out of adjectives. Which is bigger than it sounds/reads.

"bad" locations will simply be ignored. Also all bad locations will get 6 month checkups to make sure the bad was only a one off event. This is how I found the best Wings, Burger, Pizza and BBQ in my area and how several locations are now in intense competition to be the best or just get on the list. He will also order it on door dash or order pick up under a different name and ask someone to go in and pick up the order for him. I don’t think it was fair to critique him on other point but not mention this.

      Yeah, if there’s one bad review, read it and think about that person’s perspective.
      If there are a lot of good reviews and a couple bad ones …. I would look at the different reviews and see what you can take from them to make sure that they’re all real reviews first of all and that one thing isn’t because the actual customer was the problem and not the actual restaurant
