In this condensed build update, he guides us through his painting and weathering process, using a mix of oil washes and rub-n-buff wax highlights to make this scale model look like a beat-up and grimy piece of 50s machinery!

      I have two versions of the car in 1\18 by Mattel, I love the film seen it many times, and I mean many times. Pity about the turd one , sorry dad pun. But the Cadillac is a V8 not a V12 as they couldnt see any use of continuing with the V12 of engines after WW2, as they were marinised and used in the PT boats during the war. #PT109 most famous for its commander.

That puts him as a teen in the muscle car years. Most teen males back then worked and hopped their cars up. Dad wound up being a mechanic for 40 years with no formal training. I learned how to work on cars from him so I still stand by what I said. Hell I'm a licensed electrician and still teaching my 12 y/o and 4 y/o how to tinker and hop up engines. My oldest first car is a 59 gmc he is restoring sitting on a 84 olds delta 88 chassis with a ls1 under the hood. My 4 y/o wants my nova so I guess I gotta detune it and start to work on my 50 buick.

    Adam, Thanks - I really like how you break the rules when it comes to finishing - are those artists paints? BTW - It's a V8 390 CI. It only looks like a V12 because of the funky tri-headers. www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/390-cadillac-engine-motor-good-running-condition.1013714/
    Man - I have really wanted to do one of these monthly subscription models. The end result is museum quality (especially in your hands). But they are pricey! I think I may send you all a package - but I have to build the piece first.

    Exhaust manifold is not rusted enough. They are usually cast iron. And this car lived in NY. So nearly 0 shine on them... that is unless the manifold is Aluminum!
    Also get some small (.22 cal BB's) and put 1 or 2 in each paint jar to act as an agitator. Did this will all my Testors and Vallejo paints but with standard BB's cause the jars a smaller.

  • @ReverendTed
    @ReverendTed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just to answer the question that I had: This kit is 141 "issues", which come 4 per month at $10.90+$2.45 shipping ($13.35) per issue. That's $53.40/mo for right about 3 years. Factoring in that the first two issues are just $1.95 with free shipping, all told this model will set you back $1857.00, provided you don't feel the need to paint any of the parts (and don't already have the paint on hand). However, there's a swtich on the dash to turn on the headlights, the brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal, and from the photos it looks like the windows roll down using the handles. It's an insanely detailed model.

    • @gravityisweak
      @gravityisweak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really happy about the strangely convoluted pricing they seem to have going on. Maybe they figured the sticker shock will scare people away. It's certainly a great and detailed model but I'm wondering how many people will pay for the full thing. At least you can pay what you want and just go for pieces i suppose.

    • @ReverendTed
      @ReverendTed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gravityisweak I agree that it seems like they've deliberately obfuscated the total cost. You have to head to the bottom of the page to the FAQs and then click another button to show hidden questions in order to get the details. Even then you have to do the math yourself. Also, there are subscription bonuses for certain numbers of completed months, but you lose your "progress" towards those if you cancel your subscription. You can "pause" your subscription, but it says you have to call customer service to do that, and I'm curious what terms they have for pausing. The subscription model really seems directed toward getting people into the model (especially with the $1.95 for the first two, probably to ensure they have a working credit card for you) and then by the time they've realized what they're in for...what, you're going to stop with 1/3 of the Ecto-1? It also mentions (on the Ecto-1 or the Delorean, I forget which) extra paid subscriber bonuses that they'll tell you the details as they approach and give you a choice whether or not you want them shipped. It's an extra charge you have to opt-out of, if I'm reading it correctly.

    really nice kit!
    but just for comparation... converting it's price to brazilian money, it sums up to 5 brazilian monthly minimum wages
    adding the pricy shipment and the heavy importation tax, it would double the cost to buy it here
    for a regular employee guy, it could consume roughly 1830 hours of work (if he put every penny earn on this)
    so even the richest person I know wouldn't invest in this kind of hobby

    You know, Adam; this was less practical to consider back in the 20th, but now?
    How about a 1to10 PART-FOR-PART model? Accurate down to the piston rings! Starts, drives, runs on gas....radio works.....
    Aside from some of the smaller rubber processes and parts, why not?
    And I DO mean a zero compromises, part-for-part replica of a working car from the 20th Century...maybe a Hemicuda....something SO valuable there's reams of documentation about it just sitting around on websites.
    Also, vehicles with a popular history with modders are good candidates....especially since parts and plans tend to be cheap.
    I would suggest that rather than working off specs, acquire a vehicle and dismantle it down to the last part.
    The older it is, the less likely it is to have assemble-only components.

  • @katiedonovanAlt
    @katiedonovanAlt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another time-saver for builders, makers, engineers, etc.: Keep all the small stuff cluttering your horizontal spaces inside their own trays so all those little parts and pieces can be moved quickly without disorganization or loss.
    I've found it's best to add trays as you do projects, and then stow the (cleaned!)trays when the projects are done; rather than, say, buying a bunch of trays without knowing what you need.
    Otherwise, you will wind up buying ten of something you never use for 5 bucks each.
    Just, whenever you go shopping for consumables before any project--because you like to be safe AND prepped!--be sure to throw in a tub large enough to hold the largest piece of the project; that way, if you have to move everything, or put it away for a time while you wait for something, or anything at all...maybe it starts raining and you need to chuck everything into SOMETHING really really quickly...whatever it is....get a project tub. Plastic, cheap, WITH A LID so it's stackable. Try to get translucent containers whenever possible so it's easy to see what's in them.
    I'm in the 30-year club as a maker, hacker, builder, and wizard of art. I will pop in on Adam's channel to drop the odd hint here and there.

    Nice job! Cadillac used a 472 or 500 cubic inch V8 in their ambulances. These were the largest motors Cadillac ever built. Sadly Floquil paints went out of business and are no longer available. I didn't use them much in the past 20 years as they are toxic as Hell. I did use them on resin even as just a primer because they were the only paint that stuck reliably to resin kits.
    We didn't see any close ups before you weathered, but it looks like the block was Cadillac Dark Blue which was Caddy's standard factory finish for engine blocks, intake manifolds and valve covers from 1949-1976. Of course Peter Venkman probably had his mechanic send the valve covers out to be chromed!

I might pay half that for a plastic large scale kit if it was RC and included a crap ton of upgrade and super detail stuff. But $900 bucks for a die cast that comes pre-painted?!?!?! I appreciate the weathering, however there is a detail you got wrong which is just driving me nuts. On the 59 caddy, their engines were painted a dark dark navy/royal blue. On the commercial chassis engines, everything was slathered in that same blue including the VALVE COVERS. As the ecto 1 was a commercial vehicle, even if it had gone through a rebuild, no-one would take the time to strip the paint and paint it another color. So your engine block and heads of that V8 (not a V12) should have been an ultra dark blue.

    OK Adam:
    The Engine Block contains the crankshaft and pistons
    The Cylinder Heads contain the valves and valve cam trains
    The Valve Cover sits on top just to keep the oil from flying all over
    The Exhaust Manifolds connect to the exhaust ports of the heads and can get up to several hundred degrees, thus rusting or heat-corroding from use
